Got thinking about this thread and a sxs crash I was in. Let me share the story with you and why wearing a helmet is a good idea. My buddy and I were in a 4 seat razor and it rolled end over end 4 times going into a bowl at glamis. He was driving. At one point we must have been 10 feet upside down in the air. We were wearing helmets... mine was strapped, his wasn't. After the first roll his helmet came off and on roll 2,3, and 4 his face smack the steering wheel hard each time. I saw it because I turned my head to avoid the passanger handlebars smacking my face were the opening in the helmet is. When we landed on the wheels he was useless then dropped to the sand. As I sit in the seat I check myself for broken bones then try to get out of the thing incase it catches fire. After awhile I pick his ass up, put him in the passanger seat. Pick up all the broken parts and shove them in the razor. The rear seats broke out and were 50 feet away. Get in and drive back to camp. Had to make 5 loops to get out of the bowl. Because I was wearing my helmet properly I was able to handle the problem and get us out of the mess and back to camp. If I wasn't wearing a helmet my head would've busted open on those passanger handlebars and who knows when help would have arrived. If we had passangers in the back seat it would have been at least a life flight.
To your point.. it you are gonna wear a helmet, strap it on.
I will add that if you don’t have (at minimum
4) 5 or 6 point harnesses in the thing your level of risk of injury is just as high as not wearing a helmet. 3 point harnesses with steel bars all around you is not optimal. I’d have a helmet on for sure if you were going to be pushing it with stock seatbelts.
