Been with Progressive for over 25 years. Might have had 4 claims in that time? have 8 vehicles and a couple trailers insured. Out of nowhere Friday our bill states we need to pay 6 months ahead of time rather than month to month. Time to renew our policy I guess? Agent on the phone states its a California deal and that she can extend our due date a couple weeks, but we still have to come up with 6 months of payments. WTF!???

Can anyone else shed some light on this for me please?

On another note, I finally heard my wife mutter the words,,, "I'm fucking over this state",,,,

I was dropped by progressive last month for my trucking business. They are moving out of California, at least in commercial trucking as far as I’ve been told.

Thats shitty! I get it from a business standpoint, but they have been solid by us.

It sucks cause it would be very hard to fins what we have here, but this is getting ridiculous. One kick to the nest after another.

I don’t want to derail your thread but, in short, this state doesn’t want us. It’s all about bicycle riders and moving people into densely populated areas where we remove car lanes in favor of bike lanes.

The auto/home insurance deal is a different situation from this states politics and it’s death wish of the middle class but they go hand in hand.

I have my home and vehicles bundled with AAA and fortunately no issues this year.

Our rates went up about 30% last month or the month before as well. Last claim was my daughter when she got pinched in panic traffic behind a drive by shooting in Sacramento in 2021 I think. Was considered a no fault accident and rates didn't increase then..

Not sure what happened to my Mercury Policy but as others noted, jumped super high.

Now I am paying $351 for 5 months and the 1st months at $525... I was at $265 before. 3 cars, perfect driving record, one 22 year old female(clean record) . Even my homeowners went up $851 when I bought the house in 2018 and now its at $1825 a year. I made double what i made in income from 2018 and just as broke and don't even have a boat or credit card debt. I am floored!.

They sent out notices on the pay plan it has been that way for over a year now.

Auto pay is now 25% down and the 5 remaining payments are the 75% divided.

New business requires 6 months up front.

There has been several threads on this and its all insurance companies in CA. Its only just begun mercury was just approved for another 22% increase starting 2/25/24. Its going to get worse before it gets better unfortunately.

I'm afraid of this especially after having an not at fault accident at work in a company veh and the at fault party not having enough coverage so my personal policy's under-insured motorist coverage has to now cover the rest of my medical. No my employer does not have under-insured motorist and no workers comp doesn't cover the rest of it either. FML

I am on Auto Pay for my bills...somewhat set it and forget it until this crap happens and I panic. Another damn increase? is it worth shopping, or am I just going to get screwed differently.

A lot of companies have either changed or eliminated payment plans for the time being.

also on the personal auto insurance side, expect another 20-30% increase this year from most, if not all, carriers.

Basically it's a way of them saying we don't want you anymore. CA might be preventing them from canceling you so hopefully this gets the job done and they don't have to hear from the state insurance dept.

Paying $13K a year. And have not got my commercial policy increase yet. 3 personal 3 commercial. Currently my commercial is cheaper after the last increase of 40% on my personal.

Mine went up about 2400$ a year for no reason.

You guys absolutely will NOT like the prices of Florida insurance, if you were to directly compare it to the same coverage in California. You guy don’t know how good you have it!

Its the price we pay for all this sunshine.

I have AAA and haven't seen a notable increase for this year...3 cars and homeowners with them.

I have only seen the sun a couple times in the last few weeks, so yeah,,, I'm getting screwed on the sunshine tax too.. :(

Our home policy was canceled a few years ago and the only firm that would touch it is based in Mexico City,,,

It used to be your zip code would get you better rates, but that was declared racist.

But somehow "bundling" insurance (home/auto) is OK? Seems like they are still weeding out low rent types.

We have Geico auto, Safeco home, I pay Safeco once per year, I pay Geico every 6 months, it saves me a few bucks over monthly payments.

It's still that way. My house in the hood is cheaper auto than my new one per my agent. So I left the auto there. I do park a few there behind the gate with 2 German Shepherds. My mini truck tundra. Was parked on the street there for 7 years. 1 week in the good hood and the cats got stolen.

I think the cat theft has a big thing to do with increases. It's a daily thing in my good neighborhood and 3500-5500 is average cost.

We have Safeco on our autos and home. In the past we received a pretty good discount for paying a year in advance. This year the rates went up a little, but no discount for the year in advance payment. I called the Broker and she said Safeco is one of only a few companies that offer a 1 year policy if paid in advance. Most companies only offer 6 month policies and can “adjust” the rate every 6 months. So, with the rate increase and no 1 year discount, my Auto and Home Owners policies went up about 25%! She offered, “be glad you don’t live in California, most companies are completely pulling out of that state!”

Remember, CA rates in most instances are regulated by the state. CA is a consumer protection state, and insurance fits under this. So the insurance companies have a spread on how much profit that can have, and if it is too high, the state will investigate. If found to be excessive, they will order them to reduce and issue refunds. I used to be up on this, not so much now, but I believe the general figure is about 13%. Another tad bit of info, the buildings that insurance companies own, and workout of, are exempt from property taxes. Just like churches. Add 30% for Nevada car insurance.

AAA member here and I hope they do the same thing with me (Leave things as is!). I've been with them for 24 years and have had zero claims. 🤞

You have to be insured to register your vehicle. People would sign up for one month, get registration then drop coverage. Insurance companies (or the state) came up with this to try and stop that from happening.

Farmers did something similar, and my guess is at least part of it is to try to disguise rate increases. I had to pay two months up front, then the remaining balance over 5 months. Making those 5 monthly payments less. Who knows though.

Wawanessa was always pretty dang good for the perfect driver. I' believe they have been approved for 40%+ increases recently.

Costco used to beat them but its my understanding they are no longer writing in CA.

For anyone shopping insurance make sure you compare apples to apples for all coverages and annual mileage.

For anyone looking to knock the rate down a tad perhaps look at increasing the collision deductible.

I would not be reducing liability or UM coverage.

Check Wawanesa for auto insurance. They are the cheapest I could find and well know. The also don't skimp on repairs.

Our rates have gone up about 25% give or take in the last 2 months and our policy was up for renewal. A discount would be nice, but have never seen it as we have had so few claims over the time with them. Our rates were just low. We haven't canceled, but got caught off guard with a substantial upfront payment due immediately without warning. I ain't broke, but I'm not making $ like I would like to be.

Just got my AAA renewal roughly 22% increase this year. Cars are paid off so I might just increase the deductible.

That's a big increase. I had 20% increase on one motorcycle and they said it was because of the area. I asked why the other motorcycles haven't increased. No reply.
One home insurance more than doubled and I got 3 different answers. My persistence paid off when they found out it was due to their software bug.
I've had so many insurance companies and progressive is the easiest and least expensive.
I can go online and play around with limits and deductibles to find my best rate. It would take days if not weeks to get answers from my agent

I agree and that's why we have stayed with them. The agent was as helpful as she could be allowing a little time to figure it out. I can pay 6 months out, just wasn't in the plans this month. The agent apologized and said she is taking calls like this all day long and it's because of California policies. My wife asked what it would be if we moved all our stuff to Helena Montana. I haven't heard the response yet. 😂
