One of my buddies is chirping that a bunch (or all) of the trucks we sent down to CA from here in OR were stopped in Sacramento and not allowed to proceed be they are not smog tested!!!????

Can anyone confirm this is true? My brain says this is fake news, but nothing would surprise me.

Back in the 1980s there was a lot past that exempt all new emergency emergency vehicles per meeting California pollution standards they can meet at that time the other 48 state standards
Mainly because the cars were such Weezers California police cars had a problem keeping up with any type of violator. I would think that law still stands today.

According to Calfire this post in Oregon claiming this is fictitious and the inspection process was explained earlier by another RDP contributor.

Per Cal Fire ----
A spokesperson with CAL Fire says that is patently false. "No vehicles from Oregon have been turned around or refused service at Davis Mobile Equipment and all out-of-state vehicles have been services and are heading to or have arrived in Southern California. No emissions testing was performed. All repairs were completed the same day with the exception of a couple because of parts but turn around was early next day," CAL Fire Spokesperson via email.

“These inspections ensure all engines on an emergency scene are equipped, mechanically sound, and able to respond. This ensures our number one priority of a safe deployment for our firefighters,” the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office said.

Thursday night, headed home down I40, saw an impressive sight. Just west of Ashfork, in a neatly spaced convoy, 6 or 7 forestry type, ground crew transports. They were being followed by some trucks, and may have been led by some as well. It was too dark to make out the names, but they were on a mission. My guess is they were going to be working come sun up.

Sounds fake to me but there’s always some YouTuber or equivalent who likes to make a name for himself and will post crap like this up. Anyone who believes it is just as stupid too.

I think ca politics are crazy looney too but don’t see them doing something like this.

for the past three fire seasons I have sent type 3 and type 6 engines to California fires from Utah. As long as we have the current DOT inspection sticker on the truck and all current related paperwork there are a no issues. BUT dealing with the idiots at CalFire and the ANF on paperwork for the crews on the deployment is usually a friggin nightmare.

No CARB certification on them diesel engines.

It’s possible on small private fire departments but big dirty uncle government gets deleted trucks and specific to government

I don't believe that's true, I'm pretty sure our engines have DEF, they are compliant.

Must be a CA Carb deal. I don’t think epa first responders have to. We do have an option when ordering for a deleted version
Interesting. I'm not 100% but I'm curious now and I'm going to ask. I wouldn't be surprised if this is California thing

I’ll take a look at it tomorrow when I log onto Peterbilt for truck truck specs

We had to smog our police cars and do opacity test our heavy trucks in Long Beach. I don’t remember any DEF or opacity testing on the Fire trucks but I retired four years ago so it might have changed.

In th port of LA/LB, Carb has guys in small trucks running around checking for EIN numbers on equipment. Seriously. It's ridiculous
I deal with this shit all the time. I'm not able to sell used cranes in California. Even if it's 3 months old.

Government vehicles don't get smogged

Government vehicles are subject to the same testing requirements as private vehicles. Many government entities with multiple vehicles do their testing in house. At BAR we took our assigned vehicles to regular smog check stations for testing. There are exemptions for military vehicles because they are housed on federal property.

There is a section in the vehicle code which states that government fleet emergency vehicles over a certain weight do not have to be built to meet any additional requirements that California might have. This is because it would be too costly to change the build specs for a relatively small number of heavy duty emergency vehicles. Mainly fire trucks and ambulances.

I'm ok with them bending rules on this. I hate the rules, but when my vehicles go into limp mode there isn't a fire headed at me. I know for a while, the forestry 1tons out here were all V10's. When I asked why, they said safety and not getting trapped.

Same with Caltrans trucks. Hell, they were killing their power by retro fitting for smog emission standards.
It’s proven to be a problem. Our engines don’t run at an RPM high enough and long enough to do a regen on its own so we have to force a regen when the dash light comes on. We put it on the apron in front of the station and it takes 40 minutes or so to do its thing. Many times having to stop it mid regen and respond to calls.

Is LAFD still running those new electric fire engines? I’m sure they’re great in areas with power outages.

That's insane. I know talking to our town mechanic, their issue is DOD in cop cars. Idle time kills them. They haven't moved any of their heavies to modern trucks for this reason. They tend to get "hand me downs" from larger municipalities. As things have progressed though, even those are more modern.

I know this sounds bad but it would be great if this were true and resources were being turned around because of compliance. It would be the end of newsoms political career and would possibly be the end of CARB
I was thinking the same thing. When victims of the fires ask why additional help was turned away you could respond that their equipment wasn't compliant to operate in the state. Victims will say what the fuck that's fucking stupid. Respond with it's state law and the people of California voted for it, you people as a state did this to yourselves. Too bad, live with your choice. They should be bringing in the electric fire trucks and show the people how "great" it is.

“Allegedly” this is from a CalFire Engine record book.
I’d be sure to say fire engines get smog tested and have that dumb blue DEF cap.
