some people are not legally able to drive due to disabilities. This ID card acts as their form of ID.

I just got a real ID driver's license. it required a couple extra documents like a car registration and utility bill to prove I lived where I do also have my passport for ID.

Kind of strange that after almost 50 years I need to reapply and prove who I am?

Right, it's not like you need it to vote either

Since the states handed out non-confirmed ID'S and DL's to all our border jumpers. Then the airlines got concerned about shoe bombers, so the legal ones (us) have to jump thru 7 different hoops, provide birth certificates, Passports, home addresses, utility bills, and pay another $40 to get what we had all along.

I drug my feet getting this "Real ID" bullshit driver's license as long as I could. It pisses me off every time I think about it. @havasujeeper nailed it. Had our idiotic government NOT handed out ID cards and driver's licenses to every Tom, Dick and Harry, we wouldn't be in this predicament. And yes, it's now a money grab just to add insult to injury. Another fine government program that was well thought out only to be fixed by us taxpaying legal residents.

this is the only reason to get a real ID. I have a passport that works just fine. No reason to get a real ID.
Yep, not wasting my time until they make me get a eye exam at the DMV.

Correct, if you have a passport then you don't need a real ID. But then you have to carry your passport domestically.
It’s a simple thing to carry. Better than dealing with the DMV😜

You can apply for the Passport Card. It's as legit as the regular passport but a card the size of your DL. Its only good for Mexico and Canada, but it is a compact way of carrying a legit, federally recognized form of ID if you don't get the Real ID.

If you happen to have a PO box for a mailing address and a physical home address, the CA DMV will lose their fucking minds. I almost didn't get my Real ID because they kept hanging up on my bills all going to a PO box, despite the fact the service address matched my damn mortgage statement. So the passport card was nearly the final option.

Because they watered down having a DL to the point it means nothing, and tied too much bullshit to it. so now we get a super secret new DL and in a couple years it will be worthless also.

Yeah this is a federal thing that was passed back in 2005 that had a 20 year phased enforcement timeline. As much as I would love to put the blame at the feet of CA for this, every state has to have it. I've had the special gold star on my AZ license for the last 3 years I think.

Got my real Id in Wa a couple years back, made me jump thru a bunch of hoops. Needed my social security card and a birth certificate. Brought my original SS card and birth certificate with my day old footprint and original doctors signature from 1962. Said that would not work, need a reproduction issued by the state instead. several trips later I finally got it. This is what I need to do to get the ID to fly, but no ID is needed to vote WTF

When I tried, twice, to get a real ID with my birth certificate I was told it wasn't acceptable. I was born on Camp Pendleton in the 50's and the certificate looks like no other I've seen. Even applied and received a 'modern' one from the county. That wont work either.
Fuck 'em. Oddly enough had no problem getting a passport.

I don't know if this would help you, or if you care (lol)

In Cali there were 2 different types of birth certificates - full/long form birth certificates, and "abstracts."

The full/long form birth certificate identifies your birth parents, their bio info, hospital info, addresses, etc.

The Abstract was a summary version of a birth certificate and it only identified your name, birth date, and place of birth/county.

The State no longer issues "Abstract" copies of birth certificates.

Last year when I applied for a passport they required a full birth certificate.

5-years ago DMV required a full birth certificate.

My neighbor tried to use a hospital birth certificate, and they rejected his requests, too. He had to order new copies of his birth certificate from LA County.

Maybe check the copy of the "modern" birth certificate you have and see if it's a full/long form, or an abstract?

If it's an abstract, then ordering a new copy should yield a "full" long form birth certificate as the State (via each County) no longer issues "Abstracts."

Good luck :)

They airlines aren't concerned, they will let illegals on flights with a piece of paper that has a court date on it, no photo, in lieu of an ID.

This all about having a centralized national database of people.

Yet they won't ever use this massive database to verify if anyone is actually legally eligible to vote.

I've had my Real ID for years. If you fly commercial a lot, it's way easier to carry than your passport. I also have my Sentri card and its good for the North American borders but not for flying. The Sentri card replaced my expiring known traveler number to use the TSA pre-check lines and it added Global Entry to my passport.

If you fly for work, you need the Real ID and known traveler number to make your life easy. If you like to wait in lines and have the TSA glove up and poke you in the ass, don't get your Real ID and continue with your passport to fly.

My wife had to jump through a hoop on the real ID thing same as you describe. Had to visit the DMV a couple times and was quite displeased.

I just walked in, had an electric bill and my vehicle reg. and done. With an appointment...maybe 20 min.

I got mine about 4 years ago when I renewed my license. It was just a matter of submitting a couple documents to verify your address. I go on military bases, and the DOD put the requirement in place around 2019, even though the mandate was delayed for travel.

Just got mine today.

Birthday and expiration date on my D/L is tomorrow.

Was a cake walk to get the Real ID here in Missouri.

Birth certificate and two pieces of mail to address.

I also have a P.O. box and they had no troubles with that at all.

I fought it as long as i could. I had to go in any way for an eye exam.
I submitted my docs electronically, the system didn't like that I sometimes use my middle name and sometimes just the initial. Funny thing, I was able the use the dmv notification letter for address confirmation.

They would not accept the birth certificate I have had my entire life when I was getting my Real ID. I had to go to the county clerk and get a long form birth certificate. Other than that, it was easy to get.

Real ID has been the law since the PATRIOT Act, but the deadline keeps getting pushed back.

I just use my passport because why not. When I travel I always have a backpack with me and my passport pretty much lives in one of the pockets. Already jumped through the hoops to get the passport, not going to do it for my DL.
