So first off I’m going to say this is one of our own going through this battle. This RDP family has had the worst cards dealt to them in the last 18 months. They need all the prayers they can get right now.

I’ll leave names out of it. Started off with an out of the blue lung complication. Missed diagnosisses. Finally the end result on her lungs is interstitial lung disease. One of the drugs for her lungs caused rectal cancer. She went through chemo and radiation which caused more breathing problems leaving her on full time oxygen. Doctors believed it was shrinking for several months.
December came and the husband who was an avid Mountain Biker went off a cliff ending in a brain bleed, broken bones and a ruptured colon. He’s been through several surgeries on the colon in 2 hospitals which is the last major issue and is currently back at the first hospital with a wound vac and nutrition. Healing but slowly.
Meanwhile his wife went in for her pet Scan. Cancer has now metastasized to her liver. She’s no longer a candidate for the lung transplant she needs. And chemo seems to be her only option for treatment until she can’t bare it any longer. She called me today in tears because chemo is supposed to start next week. She really wants to get a second or possibly third opinion to feel more settled in this choice.
They have fantastic medical insurance. I’m reaching out to the wonderful RDP network to see if anyone has recommendations for an oncologist she can try to get in with for the next opinion. They are in Valencia. She currently goes to Cerdars. So a 1-2 hour radius is probably all she can manage right now.
Thanks in advance RDP and please send some big prayers for these two.
As always respond her, call, pm or text me.

Cedars is supposedly pretty solid, I spent quite a bit of time with someone with something similar and I can say nothing bad about UCI, very good care. Dr Brady who is no longer there was a true hero in my eyes, I heard is in long beach, maybe look him up.

City of Hope hands down. I've never seen a more efficiently ran medical office/hospital. Everyone is amazing and easy to deal with and it's a "one stop shop" for everything... They do amazing with their scheduling so you don't have to make multiple trips and sit around all day. Blood draw, scans, xrays, see multiple specialists, etc... all before noon.

My father-in-law used COH, I'm happy with my oncologist, Dr. Amol Rao, at OC Blood and Cancer Care which is part of Memorial Care in Fountain Valley.

@RiverDiva

Im a City of Hope patient. Almost three years post diagnosis.

AML, Leukemia: chemo, readiation, bone marrow transplant. All in 2020 while everyone else complained about ‘masks‘ and Covid. I actually joined RDP while recovering.

I was originally diagnosed and scheduled to be treated at Pomona, but managed to get a private referral to City of Hope. I Got a bed and started chemo the day of my CoH referral appointment.

The care there is amazing. Just different than a traditional hospital - awareness and empathy that’s on another level.

Feel free to PM me if I can help or you want any specifics.

Edit,
I’ve also been to USC, Keck medical for skin cancer,
and UCLA, Doheney eye center for cataracts,
but for an Oncologist- City of Hope 👍

I really don't have anything to add but definitely a large medical center. I got my sister into UCLA when she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. They did a great job and she wouldn't be here today had she stuck with her "community" surgeon and oncologist. Be prepared that it is a process....she will have to send previous medical records and await their review and acceptance. Prayers to her and all of you who are battling the big C.

I went through a bit of a battle when I was in my late 20's. Ended up at UC Irvine. They treated me well and were quick to get me in when I needed to go back.
After the biopsy on my leg, they removed most of my tibia. Where other surgeons wanted to cut me apart, removing bone from both femurs and adding a ton of hardware, my doctor was able to use cadaver bone and make a small incision in my hip to extract marrow. Followed up with some Chemo for good measure... Scary times but it was nice to have a place that made me feel comfortable about their thoughts in order to make educated decisions about how to proceed.

Solid place.

My prayers to these folks Stacey. While I don’t have any recommendations (my problems pale in comparison), we live in Valencia. As a result, if they need something along the lines of a meal delivery, pharmacy pick up or other errand, please feel free to let them know we’d be happy to help.

Get her in to City of Hope if at all possible. They are the only reason Terri is alive today.
