Just got a notice of incomplete registration renewal of my 2016 F450. Bought it new. It is a work truck (cab and chasis with 12' contractor bed). I never saw a requirement to register and test the truck when I paid the tags. They want an $85 late fee plus the testing. I had to sell my 2002 F450 8 years ago due to CA not allowing renewal due to 14K GVW now this. Anyone have to do this yet?

I just opened my registration now that I received today for my 2015 diesel cab chassis. Nothing But it's a 13,200 gvw truck.

I am getting quotes now for a new one and they are 14k gvw. So going gas. To hopefully avoid this BS.

have a friend who had to sell his because he could not renew it in ca.was and older body style ford with 7.3 had alot of miles but kept going and ran well was a clean truck too.

he pretty much was left no choice but to sell out of state and buy a new work truck.place i worked at before ran 3500 12ft flatbeds gassers til i convinced the old owner a 2500hd and smaller bed would work.his son was the drag on switching over. Then the dad got me a truck i picked out and they immediately saw the savings in fuel and registrations. They avoided the diesels though.

Problem is they are right behind Cali
Yep.
That was a huge reason my new RV was purchased and registered in New Mexico.
New Mexico has a RV snowbird law, just requires taking possession in New Mexico.
Since we also own property in New Mexico (portion of in-laws ranch), it gave me an address as well.

When was the registration due? For my diesel motorhome, mine is due on the 28th and I have nothing in my notice that says any sort of testing is required. My friend's motorhome is due in January and he does have a notice to test, so I'm guessing this takes effect in 2025?

I do have a notice that I have to pay some BS $30 fee for 2024 and 2023 to some clean truck program, but nothing is mentioned of a test required.

I also understand these tests consist of revving the shit out of the engine for like 3 minutes while the test is taking place. Not sure of the truth to that, but it sounds like they are intentionally trying to damage these diesels and get them out of service.

Montana LLC time
Problem is they've caught on to that. Chp has and will ask questions, heck even Blm/Rangers in Glamis were shaking down Rv's and toys that had anything other then Ca.

When I had my run in with them I told them I have a house In Az and a business in Montana. He replied with what state is your Driver's License in and I said CA. He claimed that's where that stuff needs to be registered to. We went back and forth on the topic and in the end he didn't end up writing me ticket and I believe because he was wrong at the time and knew it wouldn't stick. Moving forward though I believe it's going to get harder and harder doing the LLC or out of state thing.

My RZR’s are AZ registered (off-road only) and have CA non-resident passes.
When we are out, I only carry my AZ ID card and leave the CA DL in the RV.
BLM stopped me last time out. Showed the ID card and went on my way.

In the past I have had a Ranger approach camp in Superstition and started asking about RV registrations.
My buddy (retired SDPD), walked up to them and explained it’s not illegal (DMV issue only) and they left :)

California is making it much tougher. Ask me how I know. LOL
I had a checking account in the LLC’s name and everything related to the vehicles (registration, gas, maintenance and repairs) in the LLC was paid out of that account. When I had the LLC, I was doing business consulting, so the LLC had revenue. When I stopped doing consulting, I lost the revenue. Ended up closing the LLC.

Now it is a neighbor causing the issues for everyone with RV’s in my hood. I have one neighbor down the road, that calls parking enforcement when any RV is parked on the road. For me, the PD knows the RV is mine, has a New Mexico plate and the necessary oversized parking permit. So they don’t do anything anymore. PD ended up telling the neighbor, the consistent phone calls will be considered harassment if it continues.

Montana LLC is not going away. Unless the government changes the tax code it isn’t going away.

I suspect your situation was cops just trying to rattle cages where they have no jurisdiction. There is nothing they can do.

I paid CARB $30 for 2023 and $30 for 2024, there is a company in Rancho Cucamonga that comes to your home or business and does the test for $150. I got the incomplete notice from AAA. The test is a visual inspection and plug in to the OBD at idle. Took about 10 minutes. 2016 Seneca Freightliner M2. Back to AAA and got my tags. Hardest part is negotiating the CARB web site.

Technically due in 2024, if you didn't pay and inspect this year they will ding you for a penalty next year. Not a big deal and had a mobile guy come do the test for $150, still sucks though :(

Dealing with the DMV website and the fleet pages is the real issue on all this. I would love to get out of the state.......

This is one of the reasons why I registered my Cal Truck to my place in Havasu. That and my registration fees went from $479 annually to $252 every 5 years. Fuck Gavin Newsome!!!

What did the smog check consist of? I've heard that they stand on the gas and rev it to the moon for a couple of minutes while the readings are being taken. Sounds unusual and I don't know how true that is.

I'm fine with paying the regular reg fee and no check this year. Plan is to register out of state next year, so they can go after me for a penalty if they want. I'll be happy to direct them to a bag of dicks they can eat.

Mine was just plugged into ODBII. There were no actual readings taken of the exhaust.

There were multiple RPM ranges it seemed to go through but nothing way out of the ordinary or concerning. Probably 15-20 minutes.
