trying to buy a new dodge. local so cal dealers seem like they don't want to deal.. 70k otd for a 74k truck doesn't seem like a great deal for a 2018.. Tried multiple dealers and getting same results.. Talking to out of state dealers and seeing big difference in prices.. Got me thinking if its worth a fly and drive a new truck home.. So asking if any one has done this and whats needed to be done with registering and taxes in this lovely state of cali.. any help would be great.. thanks Adam

Save yourself the trouble and have it shipped to you.

When I bought out of state, I paid their local taxes. When I went to register the truck in my state, I had to show proof of taxes paid, then paid the difference since my local rate was a half-percent higher.

Dealers do this all the time, they’ll walk you thru it.

Have done this several times. Pro star hit the nail on the head. If the Dealer that you are talking to says they can’t do it go to another Dealer. My case is a litttle different being that I am in Hawaii. For me the mainland Dealer does not charge taxes and I pay it when register it in Hawaii. A California Dealer cant allow it on th road or they will need to pay CA tax. They can ship it to the boarder of another state. WE are thinking about that next time and taking a road trip in the new car. Good luck!!!

Start an LLC in montana. Problem solved. People with 6 and 7 figure motorhomes do it all the time. No sales tax either.

All fun and games until your local dealer has to perform warranty work on a truck they didn't sell ya.
Not saying they won't, but when I worked at a gm dealer purchase customers had borderline warranty work often performed under warranty.

Bought my 3500 dodge last year November Dave smith motors in Kellog ID. Paid zero sales tax or dmv fees at the dealership. I paid those once I got back home in California.
You'll need a calif certified weight receipt, and have the new truck smogged. Yes even diesel. Then go to dmv and write that huge fricken check.

My luck.... I bought a civic 2/18 and a Subaru 10/18 both in the Ontario auto center, both to be registered in AZ. Both dealers said ,”no problem”. Both did the one way pass bullshit. Both a calif license plate showed up a month after registering in Az. Both showed I paid cadmv fees on that registration, both did not show that amount in the dealers paperwork. Both, I have now got registration revoked from calif and pissy letters from cadmv because not giving them proof of insurance. Both, the cadmv will not refund reg fees.
So, bottom line for me, I double paid for registration and seemed to have pissed off cadmv.
I’m in the process of getting a new truck. If at all possible, I will go to Peoria or phx to buy. The ca. Dealers all say no problem, but I have every reason not to believe them.
Maybe going the other way, Az into calif, you will have better luck.

I have done this twice one in ca the second in az. I just don't understand the problem is some people are happening this is a very simple thing to do to comply with the law and here's how it works.

Generally for a cash purchase as this is how I did it. Ask the dealer.

1. I purchased a truck in California paid a $350 shipment for you to Las Vegas one week later it was in Las Vegas once it arrived in Las Vegas I took a delivery form to a local notary and had it notarized I took the delivery form back to the dealer in California and they provided the MSO.

2. I purchased a hummer used in Phoenix paid cash the delivery charge was included about a week and a half later the vehicle arrived in California.

California do what I can do the same thing if they don't want to give you the title on a used vehicle they can go to the DMV not pay sales tax do a title only transfer showing the shipping document and the notarized receipt.

Now in Arizona apparently it's a bit different they are required to change the existing title into my name not just provide the title they had on hand from the previous owner. This took about four weeks they went to the DMV change the title is a title only transfer show the shipping document that it was shipped out of state to make it tax exempt. I receive the title fed ex about four weeks after purchase.

Bought my wife's brand new 4Runner from a dealer in OH. Car was shipped to us in CA. I got it smogged, ($59) then went to one of those registration services not at the DMV. They collected the registration due, and the difference in sales tax due and handed us plates that day. Super easy, and with shipping it was still $3000 less than what we found in CA. Both Dave Smith and Dennis Dillon up here in Idaho sell cars to other states every day. For a truck like the 3500 you probably need a weight statement which can be got at any commercial scale and was like $35 bucks if I remember right.
