This could have really bad consequences. At this moment the up river sewer plant above the Keys and in front of Mirilaste Shores is on fire. Just walked up close and there are probably ten plus fire trucks on scene. It is a mainly below ground structure, but the flames are pretty visible, and smoke is pretty thick in the keys area. What happens when you flush the toilet, and there isn't a sewer plant ???

Will do, I should have taken my camera " I know this thread is worthless without pictures ! " There is a large septic tank truck at the lift station by my house right now. I am trying to stay positive, but think there could be a very negative outcome.

Only Tom Brown would know, but a sewer plant burning smells like sulfer and fire works. :thumbsdown

Are they evacuating any if that area? I was thinking of going up in the morning. No point in driving there if I can't get to my house or use the sewer.

All joking aside.....

This could be a pretty serious incident.

Depending on the capacity of the waste department, there can be several very toxic chemicals involved.

I'd stay upwind as much as possible.

Burning turd smoke......no big deal

Burning mixtures of processing chemicals?........not good.

Stay safe river folk

They have to have a plan in place for just this kind of event.
At one time, overflow sewage lagoons are what they used in Bullhead when the shitter burns.
They open a bypass valve and the raw turds flow into the lagoon to bask in the Arizona sun.
Hence the name of some liberal Az Newspapers.

Then the sewage is sucked up and trucked to other locations for treatment, or in some cases, allowed to evaporate then the residual is scraped and loaded into trucks and hauled off.
Dunno if it's still this way or a whole different kinda system is in place.

About 800 BTU's per cu ft of fart gas and sometimes a pump motor grenades or some other source sparks or heats and ignites the whole operation.
Always seems to happen in the heat of summer.

Burning sewage can leave very dangerous, poisonous residue. Very, very hazardous.
I wanna say poisonous heavy metals develop in the burning process,,,, but it's been so long since I worked with the turd chasers I forget so don't hold me to any of this.

Plant looks in pretty bad shape this morning. One fire truck still on scene and a sherriff taking a report. Road is open and smoke smell has diminished. Septic trucks at several of the lift stations this morning pumping out. Pumped at the lift station by my house several times last night.

That area across the street from Sandpiper, up river from Miraleste Shores is called Bedrock. I've got family and friends that live there.

I called this morning, they said there must've been a breeze because no one smelled anything.

If I hear anything I'll post...

Glad it is under control, fixing these things isn't cheap.
You folks on the system can probably expect a, "we need more money" letter soon.

Just called my dad as I am at work. He said that there are numerous septic trucks running up and down Hwy 95 and through our neighborhood. I just can't imagine they can keep that going 24/7 until it is repaired.

No serious ammonia or chlorine leak or fumes. No spillage. No evacuation. Fire pretty much confined to the front room of the plant.

The HAZMAT contingency was due to the presence of the chemicals, not that they were actually involved in the fire.

Our investigators have determined that there's nothing suspicious in the fire and it was accidental.

Plans are in place for continued normal operation of the District sewage system.

Thanks for the update. Puts my mind at ease knowing the river house isn't swimming in $#!%, literally.

There must be quite a flow going into that place... Where does the "treated" water get dumped?

Effluent is pumped into holding ponds just south of Golf Course drive, below Hwy 95. From there it gets sent over to the golf course for irrigation.

Dad just sent this to me in an email. Thought you all might want the update...

Staff Reports
Monday, September 17, 2012 3:36 PM MST

The Buckskin Sanitary District is asking its customers to conserve water as best they can following a fire Sept. 13 at the district's treatment plant at the Sandpiper Resort.

The Lake Havasu City Fire Department's Hazardous Materials team assisted the Buckskin Fire Department because several cylinders of chlorine appeared to be compromised by the fire.

One Lake Havasu firefighter was injured when he was overcome by the fumes and was transported by ambulance to Havasu Regional Medical Center where he stayed overnight for observation, according to a Lake Havasu City Fire Department press release.

Buckskin fire officials requested Lake Havasu's assistance at about 7:45 p.m. The Lake Havasu City Fire Department responded with an engine company, the HazMat Response Unit and a battalion chief.

The HazMat team members entered the building and determined the chlorine gas cylinders were still leaking, according to the release. The team secured the chlorine to eliminate any further danger to the community.

Lake Havasu fire crews were on the scene for five hours. The Buckskin Fire Department remained on the scene throughout the night.

BSD General Manager J.W. Pooler is asking district customers to conserve water as much as possible. As of Monday morning, he said crews are making temporary repairs to the facility in an effort to get it back in operation. Once the plant is operational, Pooler said they would rebuild the entire facility.

Pooler said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

BSD Board Member Patrick Jones told the La Paz County Board of Supervisors at their Sept. 17 meeting the district is using trucks to pump the untreated waste into the Colorado River Sewage System Joint Venture?s system. He said the remainder of the system is fully operational, and there should be little impact on district customers.

The following notice was placed on the district's website, www.buckskinsanitarydistrict.org:

?The Board of Directors would like to alert you that there has been a fire at the wastewater treatment plant. We do not know the cause of the fire and we are in the process of assessing damages to determine the extent of repairs necessary to bring the plant back on line and fully operational.

The District is employing outside pumpers to avoid any discharges and environmental upsets. We would greatly appreciate your assistance in this matter by minimizing your use of water as much as possible until further notice by the District. This would be of the most help to the District.

Please be assured that the District is doing everything within its power to make the necessary repairs and bring the plant back on line in an expeditious manner and as of now there are no issues for the customers. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your patience.

The District will keep you apprised of their progress on the District's website at www.bsdsewer.org on a daily basis. Please do not contact the office until we are through this time of urgency.

Thank you

Board of Directors
