Busted a rocker stud last night. 20170813_065511.jpg

I broke it on silver lake last night.

The water skiers and tube riders have to quit at 630, then it's no wake after sunset. Usually everyone goes in for dinner, except 3-4 jet skis.

This is when I go out to mess with my efi stuff. The water is flat, and i usually have the lake to myself for an hour or so. This was the case last night.

I made a couple passes in front of silvercryst, which was packed. Roll bar boat had his cute little stereo cranked, with the speakers pointed towards the lake. I've got a lean spot in the middle, around 26-2800, then it goes rich.
So I roll it up on plane, I'm watching the digital dash on my laptop, the afr, the wires tucked behind my knee, trying to see what the map kpa is, the pulse width, and the afr, all while driving. I finally got the transition to where it hauls some azz, so i roll up to the beach at silvercryst. I always open the hatch, to cool it down. Oil is getting warm. If i sit for 20 minutes, i can haul some azz again. So here comes roll bar boat guy, asking me how fast I was going. Standard answer is 47.

There's a 50mph speed limit on the lake, and i don't need the aggravation.

So roll bar boat guy is actually pretty decent, and is asking about the stereo. I said, ok, let's get it over with.

I cranked it to "stupid"...

He turned around with his tail between his legs.

So, THEN, this old school cool jet bote comes outta no where. Cruising about 60-65...makes a lap of the lake, then starts throwin a big rooster.

Roll bar guy comes back over as I'm climbing in the hula...

You going to go catch him?

Yep.

Roll bar guy shoves me off the beach, i spun around, roll up, and cruise towards jet bote dude...i have to make the turn at the end of the lake, and jet bote is already 1/4 of the way across the lake. By the time we go past silvercryst, I've closed the gap by a bunch, 2/3 across the lake i have him by 200 yards. Completely waxed him. In front of like 300 people....

Making the turn at the other end, BOOOM! CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK.....

Shit.

I open the hatch and start tearing a valve cover off. My buddy Dave, who lives on the lake calls me...

DUDE!!!THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!!HOLY BALLS!!!!

yea? How's the toon runnin dave? Good? Ok, cool, come get me.....

So I got to push rope back to the launch....

I'm pulling the motor out now, and putting last year's back in. Be back on silver in time for a sunset cruise 😎

When something like that happens does it do more damage than just having to screw in a new stud?

Depends if the camshaft beat the shit out of the roller lifter. Without any spring tension to push the lifter back down, it could've really taken a beating. I haven't torn it down to see the full extent.

Concentrating on getting the other motor in.

Bummer. At least there isn't a hole in the block.

Was this the same valve you had the retainer issue?

Nope. It's next door neighbor. Retainer was on 5, busted stud was 3.

I had to take this chic out to dinner last night, so no motor boating in the hula. 😉
I'm just dropping the 355" motor in now.

Thanks bud. The crow thread will continue for quite a while. The 411 motor will be repaired over winter, and I'll continue to tune on it next summer. It really needs an oil cooler, and the hoses for that whole mess need to be sized appropriately.

The whole plan is to build up an older jeep xj, and use this 355 to power the jeep. Of course it'll have to have a matching paint scheme ;)
