I’m looking at the different brake controller systems to set up in the Jeep for flat towing. It looks like the brake buddy 3 or classic is the go to, does anyone have any experience or opinions on these setups? I’m not opposed to finding a used one, but can go new also. Pulling 5000lbs with a class C, I want to be legal, but more so it just seems like a very good thing to have in place. I have friends that flat tow behind bigger motorhomes and do not use a braking system, they seem to have no issues, but I’m guessing liability would be a very bad deal should something go wrong, from my research the limit is 3000lbs or higher requires brake system by law most places.

Reality is we will use this setup this summer for a few thousand miles and then maybe a few times a year in the future for smaller weekend trips close by. I’m good with a portable system that goes in and out each time.

I bought a used brake buddy for towing the Jeep. Quick easy setup and breakdown. No complaints from me. I also have the remote that shows when it activates with a red LED. Just plugs into lighter on RV. Don’t have to use it but kind of gives you peace of mind that it’s working properly.

Some states are requiring a braking system for the toad now.... The brake buddy works great, just sucks that you need the key on (towing an explorer) and during a long drive your battier would be weak or dead...

My father installed the air force one on his DP....So he might still have the brake buddy, I'll see if he does and if looking to sell.

Im going to install a brake light wire harness on the Jeep also, plan is to put diodes inline so the Jeep and motor home are both isolated from each other. Have an option to run a hot lead from motorhome, sounds like that would be ideal to power the brake buddy unit vs tapping onto positive on Jeep battery terminal?

If I’m understanding these units correctly, it’s actuated by inertia like the old school trailer brake controllers? I assume the sensitivity setting is to pick up the inertia?

It sounds like the brake buddy is a good option, any other units I should be looking at?

I tow a Chevy Colorado and put the diodes and hot wire in as you described and it works great. Did the hot wire because I have to leave the key on to unlock the steering. The brake buddy pretty much sets on the floor to look legal.
