The program will NEVER come back to life, it is a sinking ship. When LDS church bailed I didn't keep my sons in it. It's lost it's value. I'm an Eagle Scout and I can't remember the last time I told somebody I was an Eagle and when I did they probably didn't care.

Arrow of Light
Eagle Scout
5 palms
109 Merit badges
2 high adventure camps
OA Vigil
Mic-O-Say Firebuilder
Camp Staffer
4 year den chief (all 8 of my Cub Scout den became eagles).
One of 1000 or so recipients ever of the Heroism Award for saving a life.
Former ASM
Former District commissioner.

Scouting gave me so much…and then the liberal activists infiltrated and ruined it.

I walked away when the openly gay leadership deal took hold, knew I wanted no part of it for sure when it became co-ed. it already had programs that were (venture/sea). Now it’s going to the alphabet scouts full of predators and turned into a sissy factory catered to the gays. BSA was a great thing especially for fatherless young men…now it’s just an abomination of it’s former self. Lord Powell would be rolling in his grave.

My son and a bunch of his friends are Eagles.

I served on the Troop Board for many years.

After I left, some pansy azz dad became Scout Master and ran the troop into the ground.

He actually cancelled a camp out due to the rain. FUCK! That's what Scouting WAS all about, teaching kids how to plow on through Any adversity. Yeah, not so much anymore.

Then they let a mom become Scout Master shortly after that.

We've come a long way since 1903...

"Returning as a hero from the Boer War, a British Army General, Robert S.S. Baden-Powell, discovered that boys in England had been using a manual he had written for training military guides and intelligence agents (“scouts”), Aids to Scouting. They called themselves “Boy Scouts”, because they were using the skills of scouts and they were boys… Baden-Powell realized that the methods he had used in training military scouts and organizing boys at the Siege of Mafeking during the Boer War could be used in a more formal way to train boys in citizenship, character and fitness."

Yet people doubt we are in a non shooting civil war...

Oh yeah? I met the smoking hot 30 year old District Executive at my Eagle ceremony that took place when I was 18. Ended up banging her after she invited me to her office Christmas party. Dated her for the following three years.

I got some merit badges and shit before that too.

Between the teachings of LBP & Men like the Chief ( https://kcyesterday.com/articles/bartle ) aka the namesake of the Kansas City Chiefs… BSA turned boys, often lost fatherless boys into men with skills, integrity, and reverence.. things unfortunately the newest generation seriously is lacking in many cases.

It is disappointing to see the legacy of BSA destroyed by the alphabet crew..

A very good friend of mine is an eagle scout, we just had a conversation about this. He was over the organization in the 90's. This just makes it all worse. He told me about a good friend of his who passed, before he packaged up all of his eagle scout stuff, shipped it back to them with a scathing letter saying to remove his name from their roles.

Same. Both boys are Eagles and was heavily involved. Now barely a mention. It is actually sad and embarrassing.

The Eagle Scout badge is the ONLY civilian thing you can put on a military uniform.

That used to say a LOT.

Today, with the current state of our military? I'm thinking it might not mean a whole lot.

😞

It's a shame what has become of BSA. But it doesn't diminish the great memories friends and leaders that I met along the way to my eagle in the 80s.

Funny this thread popped up. Cleaning out tool box over weekend. IMG_20240507_183750173.jpg

Indeed. I have literally hundreds of camping and hiking trip memories over the thirteen years I spent in Scouts.

One of my Half Dome hikes including a week in the back county of Yosemite will forever be etched in my mind.

I wonder when the mom, that took over my troop, will lead the boys on a week long backpacking trip?

Anything is possible I suppose.

I was a cub scout and boy scout until our 2 eagle scout brother pack leaders quit on us when I was in jr high. One of my fondest camping memories was backpacking in the Big Horn mountains for a week. I was a cub scout den leader and pack advancement coordinator while stationed in NYC. Once I cracked down on the awards (the kids actually had to start earning them) it got better. They were getting stuff monthly like candy, one day I thought about how hard some of it was for me when I was little so I started digging into what was being turned in. It was about 6 months before submissions were being done correctly.

Scout Oath:

On my honor, I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

"morally straight"

My definition of "morally" is different than theirs

Truly a loss for America. I barely made 2nd class. San Gabriel Valley Council.

But having kids in our CS Den, go through the Arrow of Light, become the Wolves!! Our 100+ kid strong BS Troop 649 in San Diego County circa late 90's early 2000's was pretty tight. Just lucky I guess. Proximity to Anza Borrego,
Mat aguay,, beach, San Diego County.
Beats the Arroyo Seco. Lol. Good times. Say LA V...

In 1972 BSA had membership of about 4.8 million scouts on a population of about 205 million.

By 2020 it was down to 760,000 on a population of 331 million.

Society has changed and the activities embraced by scouting are unfortunately no longer that popular.

Unfortunately BSA was dying a slow death on its own prior to Covid and prior to allowing females to join in 2019.

We used to do a shooting sports weekend out in the desert. We would head out Friday night, set up camp in the dark, and spend all weekend shooting 22's and shotguns.

I'm not sure who loved that weekend more, the kids or the dad's that went!

One of the dad's had been a cook in the military, so he KNEW how to cook out camping! He set up a complete cook station, under about 5 full size EZ-ups. He had a complete white board schedule for the boys and everyone had a job.

One year...

He cooked steak and lobster, with baked potatoes and corn on the cob, out in the middle of the desert!

Everyone had a GREAT time!

Then a few years back...

The BSA decided that shooting would ONLY be done at approved BSA shooting ranges. No camping. No fire pits. No steak and lobster.

What a huge disappointment. 😞

I was a CS. We had a camping trip for the den and while us CS were roughing it in small tents eating trail mix and canteen water, the parents had a full blown tent setup with a full dinner and wine.

I think the parents had more fun than we did.

I earned a lot of badges but then families fell apart and the den was dissolved and I didn’t get to BS.
