Anyone have a gruff tuff? American made and I can pick up a small for 99 bucks. Don't know if a small would hold my boat. Amazon had the slide anchor I think for 160 and Walmart has it for 109 I think. Thoughts? Am I making this too difficult should I just pick one up in bhc somewhere

I think the one I have is a medium box anchor that I got at Spanky's in Parker, use it on the Parker strip for a week or two at a time with a 19' Hallett and the boat does not move even in high wind. And when leaving I have to be right over it and pull it straight up to remove. Great anchor

Glad I asked. You're right and that won't really work for me without folding into a bag

I also bought the one at spankeys a few years ago, it was 120 bucks I think. Will hold my 210'and my dads 240 tied to the back of mine. I've done it on numerous occasions floating near bluewater and it never even budged. It folds and came with a case, one of the best purchases I've made for my boat.

Edit: it's heavy to pull up from the bottom and always has a lot of sediment to remove, but still well worth it to me

I have a couple of small slide anchors on board the 24' tritoon and 1 is all I ever need unless I'm worried about blowing around in tight quarters with lots of other boats.

I have only had one occasion where I had trouble getting the anchor to set..............but then again I had Milkmoney working the anchor so it probably wasn't the anchor:rolleyes

I carry a danforth and a box anchor Just depends on the situation on which anchor i decide to use if its rock bottom like at needles i use the box anchor,But anywhere where its sand or dirt bottom i will use the danforth and keep the box in the boat.

I know that the danforth anchor grabs better on sandy or dirt bottoms than the box anchor does. After a couple days as a camp anchor it can be a pain to pull out the box anchor pops right up.

You will NOT be happy with a large one....I had one and it is just too damn big.....small is more than enough for your boat.

I run the large with chain on my G23 and pontoon. With the crew usually on my boat they need all the help they can get.. The small one should do though in 95% of cases. I find my self using the stake more.

Well these guys might have jus changed ur mine. I used the large on the Parker strip with my 25' laser, for me it is better safe than sorry, I used it for 7 years , did what I need it to. Parker has a current [emoji6] [emoji202]

Either I sell it or trade someone for a small , no matter to me

PSA to all boat owners.... The holding ability of your box anchor has a great deal to do with how much rode (line) you let out. You should have at least a 5:1 ratio to a 7:1 ratio. This means if it is 10 feet deep you should have 50 to 70 feet of scopehttps://www.outdoorhub.com/how-to/2012/04/05/are-you-anchoring-your-boat-safely/
out! Everyone drops their anchor straight down and expects it to hold... doesn't work...

Should I run chain or just rope? Don't really want chain, more to worry about scratching the boat

Along with the adequate rode (scope), aboutt 6' of chain does increase the holding capability substantially. Although, believe the manufacture claims it is not required.

If you ever make it to Lake Kaweah, I wouldn't be in a hurry, don't leave it unattended. The thieves will be on it like a bum on a bologna sandwich.

Not only the length of rope but the correct type of rope. Anchor rope is the best...... it stretches a little so it does not rip the anchor out. The color rope from the Home Depot is not the correct rope.

I don't use chain and mine holds great... I like the nice lines from top knot... They make good stuff..

My box anchor disappoint me a few times. I threw it out at the lower sandbar at Parker and watched in flip onto its side and the boat drug it until I stopped it. It did this multiple times. I am going to buy an Hourglass anchor for next season. The mantus looks good but too bulky.

I've purchased 3 box anchors for my 24' Tri-toon.

First one was a large. It worked great, but was too big for the boat. It was heavy and extremely hard to pull up (I have very bad wrists). I sold this one to a member on here.

The 2nd one was a small. It worked flawlessly holding the boat and I thought I was set. Then one day, the wife and I were fishing, and all of sudden, I noticed that we were no longer anchored. I pulled up the anchor line and the anchor was gone. The rope had shreaded. Being somewhat of a cheap ass, I had used some cheap rope for the line instead of true anchor line. (lesson learned).

So I bought #3, a small again. This time, I used legitimate anchor line, and it holds great once again.

I have not used chain on any of mine, but I do let out a lot of rope when I anchor (we are usually anchored in much less than 10 feet of water).

Use anchor rope, 100ft, but last time I pulled it up all I got was the metal stick that attaches to the box..........

I'm on my 3rd small box. #1 I let go when I sold my previous boat...stupid. #2 is stuck on a fishing cage in a cove, it set in real good. I know where it is but don't have the dive gear to go down and get it. #3 is working fine on anchor rope with no chain.

For everyone thats hooked on these 500lb box anchors, look up the Fortress aluminum anchor. You'll never buy anything else.

I boat the river not deep water.

I use a stainless steel medium box anchor with an Anchor Buddy bungee.

This combination has never let me down with my 18' 6'' Hallett Mini Cruiser.

YMMV
