Your boat had to have been in the movie, yes they did blow up a stripped down hull and the other was left on its trailer and put on this specially built plate form so they could simulate it kinda rolling around as if it was in the water. They thought it was easier with the boat on the trailer instead of the carpenters building something that would hold just the boat then deciding on how it would work on the plate form. This boat never hit the water to my knowledge, they had this boat in a sound stage in Santa Monica for doing most of the close-ups. The third was the actual one that they used ripping around in the L.A. Harbor. Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell and Michelle Phiefer. All cool people, especially Mel back then.
How did they show mel in the boat at the dock if it was on a trailer?

Wow! Great info! I watched the movie recently and for the close ups in the night shots the interior was painted black. I imagine that was to reduce glare. My boat was “restored” at some point in the past. It has a well done, but old coat of red paint on it and the wing was moved forward for some reason. There was shore power connection and breaker added for its time in the marina. The guy who was helping the new owners of the lot I bought the boat from, said that an older gentleman called him after seeing it posted for sale. He was around 80 years old and said that he was in charge of the boats for the movie. He was the one that told him about the three boats. He also said Mel could not drive a boat for shit and kept running it into things.

If the shot was of the actors on the dock, that's the 3rd boat they actually ran in the harbor. The one left on the trailer was left in the sound stage. You might notice if you've ever seen the movie that most of the close-ups, you actually can't tell if their on the water or in the sound stage. None of the close-ups were done on the water. This is because on most camera angles the lights off of the docks were effecting the shooting. If that makes any sense.
