Boating question, Would a 2010 Malibu 21 vlx be a decent boat for wake surfing

Not going to spend $100k plus on a silly wake boat so looking at older , these seem to be in the $30k range, just don't know anything about them.

Not 100% sure on the years but Malibu had a bad run with some of their Indmar motors and the flex plate would blow up. You’d have to pull the engine and replace the flex plate with a new beefed up one.

I’d check on that, as that happened close to 2010.

Yes, it will get the job done ....add fat sacks if you need more weight. We had an 04 Malibu LSV 23's vs the 21'....buddy had the 2002 VLX 21...it was a great boat and made a great wake...we put 500 hrs on ours before getting rid of it...the indimar hammerhead 383 was a great motor.

The surf Yamahas are $65k+ used, 100k+ new. I’d buy another one in a heartbeat but not sure this meets his requirements.

I’d suggest bumping your budget a little and get an axis (Malibu value brand) or mastercraft NXT.

Also, anything under 22ft is going to have a very steep wake that is tough for heavier riders. This is why 23ft is usually the smallest you see these boats on the lake.

Side note, Amex does reasonable rate personal loans up to $40k on a 5 year loan if you’re trying to avoid a lien or other shenanigans with a boat loan. Rates are comparable to a boat loan.

Not sure what it is you’d settle for Dan but, this is the cleanest older Malibu Sunsetter I have seen since commencing my search. It was sitting with a for sale sign on it at the vacant island lot a couple of weeks ago. I went back and looked at it 3 times, once with my wife. Truly a clean older boat. Comes with a full boat and bow cover.

We have been dickering back and forth with the guy on it ever since. He wanted $20k for it but, he reached out and offered it to me for $16k yesterday. As it happens, I made an offer on a 2006 Yamaha 230 AR yesterday as well and would rather have it.

I’m looking at the 2006 23 with twin 140 HP 4 strokes this weekend via FaceTime. It’s a few hundred miles outside of Havasu but it appears clean and the guy claims full service every year and uses it 5 times or so annually. He’s looking for $17.5. Seems like a decent deal.

Yeah Debbie and the kids want to surf tube and wakeboard, they are all small so not going to need huge wake, i'm going to go check in with my mom next week but when i get back think ill go check this bad boy out, kind of makes sense to go with newer because of the technology

You should take a look at the Sanger V215. I have an 05 that I added rear ballast and a wave shaper to and it will surf pretty well. I set it up for my kids to surf behind it, but I can surf behind it as well without the rope. The newer V215’s have surf tabs and better ballast systems and are a value compared to the giant wake boats. We water ski behind ours 99% of the time though. The V215 is probably one of, if not the best handling v drive “wake boats” out there. Same hull from 05 to present.
Semper Speed and Marine in Madera has a couple really nice low hour used Sangers for sale.

Oh I’d think it was more than that, but that’s probably what he owes. The Axis are the entry level Malibu line. The materials are lesser quality, the fit/finish isn’t as good, etc. Think of it as a Baja to a Cigarette type deal.

At $80K you can get into a true Malibu 22mxz or similar that will serve you better over time. There are pros/cons to ALL of them! I’ve owned I think 8-10 of them, have been in/behind virtually all of them. Fire me a PM if you want to talk, in today’s climate, you DO NOT want to buy the wrong one, otherwise you’ll be upside down forever.

Skiing, Tubing, Wakeboard, Direct Drive, Surfing Add Weight, V-Drive Preferred. Speed Control as well. Axis is Malibu's Low End, Not sure how they cut the costs. Sanger, Tige, Malibu, Axis, Mastercraft V-Drives all good. Make sure its all composite and no wood stringers.

That's cool Eric. Just realized your behind my old 1992 Malibu Skier. We do everything behind an old tournament ski boat. Dan, you really don't need an expensive wake boat to have fun. We water ski, surf, and Foil five days a week. Unless the kids are going to the Olympics those fancy boats are not necessary.

Been watching those in Waikiki for a couple of years. Then you have the guys that shoot the channel without a boat. Very intriguing!!! I assume that it is very easy on an old man’s joints.

No problem, shit a 6 pack would last me a week or more nowadays, and while driving a boat its just water, ( been that way for a long time)

Axis cuts corners on a Malibu mainly in the area of the ballast system. In a Malibu the ballast is built into the hull as tanks. On the Axis it’s basically plumbed in fat sacks sitting in the two back storage areas. Both have the center and bow ballast, but I haven’t seen if those are still just water bags in those areas in an Axis.

Also, I believe the interior isn’t as nice (material wise). What Axis uses gets damn hot. Our Malibu upholstery was much cooler.

Finally, the instrument cluster isn’t as advanced in the Axis as the Malibu. As far as all the features and controls possible.

We have 2023 Axis A24. It’s all over larger than the 2005 Malibu Wakesetter LSV we had before.
