That sucks. Was this caused by "backing down"? If you've never seen that done, google it. Shits crazy and I don't understand how it doesn't end in catastrophe more often.

I've seen that video before. Always wondered if that raft has a boarding ladder or not.

The guy is on Instagram and did several videos about how it happened, but I cannot remember the cause.

Life rafts have rubber straps that hang down that you use as a ladder and to pull yourself in.

some of the videos are pretty nuts, my understanding is most of them are running scuppers on deck, but i would still be damn nervous seeing that come over the stern.

This backing down bullshit. Isn't the engine room below decks ? That don't look too fuckin swift to me but I can't swim so.

That’s hard to watch, I’ve been acting captain on a friends 36 Riviera lately because he just wants to fish. Id hate to be responsible for a mistake like that.

The water should all exit the scuppers pretty quickly in a back down, the engine room is mostly sealed so not much water would make it inside.

The backing down problem becomes real when the rear cockpit volume is too large and therefore can hold too much weight of water, and the buoyancy of the vessel cannot float it high enough to allow sufficient drainage to begin.

I imagine you would also take into account maybe the start of a trip with full fuel, water etc.
Even with that factored in a wet deck should be able to shed whatever you throw at it.

These sport fishers are so big they DGAF about that. If all else is well, you can back down and flood the back, the boat doesn’t even hardly falter from that.

Now if the door is open, or the hatches aren’t sealed things can change, but rare.

I was going to say the same. If you’ve ever been on a sportfisher it doesn’t phase them. They’re purpose built for this exact scenario.

Its a fish. There's more. This swamping the transom makes no sense to me. That was a wall of water which will need time to completely drain.

We have engines under sealed hatches with 4 scuppers to drain the 10' x 12' area. Someone jumps down and watches for leaks before evey fishing trip. That said this is just using the hose. Not 500 gallons of instant water.

Yes I have backed down but only at a speed to ease the fight a bit especially if we are light on humans because dudes can tire out. A 212 lb BF was the largest so far. In this case we had seasoned dudes that could handle the fight. I just did my best to keep the transom to the fish.

Last thing I want to do is put the stern in. Like Racey said water is heavy. The issue with a CAT is one sponson will fill before the other and the boat will roll. Then were all in the water with all sorts of ground chum. Not my ideal of fun boat times.
