Let’s say you have $30k +/- 5 grand to get a performance boat in the 18-22’ range. What would you get a why? Been looking at 210’s, 19/21 Daytona’s, smaller eliminator eagles, etc.

Ultra 247xs would be high on my list, as would the 23xs, but lower down because I own a 23xs and really really wish it had the integrated swim step. WTOB would be preferred, mine is a closed bow. Really fun hull to drive, isn't going to handle the chop like some of the heavier boats, but in all reality, the chop sucks regardless of what boat you're on in the $30k range. All of them will get you back to the ramp, albeit some a little bit slower than others in the afternoon or wind. I would say Cobra Razor 230 as well as they're essentially the same boat as the 23xs, but I don't see ever see any Cobras in the low $30's price range.

Hallett 210 would be a really nice entry point

This caught my eye scrolling marketplace. Don’t know a ton about the merc 2 stroke outboards but seems it would be reasonable on fuel and maintenance unless I’m way off base

21’ Hallett or 23’ Cobra would be my choices. Both are great boats.

Only thing sucks about two stroke is the oil. If it’s an high performance engine you want the good shit. $80 a gallon. Adds up quick.
I’m use to that with the 225 Yamaha on our center console

Stoker SST 20' or 22' w/ 200-300hp clamp-on
(My choice 225 pro max 😉)

Yes oil price per gallon sucks with 2 strokes. But like my jet bote buddy's say "smiles per gallon" 😎

Was looking into those too since they have great classic lines. Love the smell and sound of a 2 stroke

Too many brands and models to list. I would 75-85% base my choice on condition, value and what I'm using it for.

I’m one of the east coast outliers on this site. All my boating is done on fresh water lakes. I haven’t boated in the ocean in years

out east, aren't fountain, baja, cobalt the reigning champs?

They definitely are the popular choices but not my style
has anyone asked how gnarly the lakes that you frequent get?

a 21 cat with a 2 stroke outboard isn't going to be the nicest ride if the water gets nasty.

the v hulls mentioned above will def be a nicer ride in most conditions.

boats are like tools, application based. can you explain a bit more about how/where you boat?

The lakes don’t really get too rough so in my mind a west coast style v-bottom or cat would work. I do venture out to the upper Chesapeake bay and it can get rough but the areas I go are well protected and most times would be like havasu with mild chop.

I, “think” the 2.5 drag motors have a rebuild schedule of every 250 hours.
That seems inline with the seller’s description. 320 hours on the boat and 20 on engine rebuild

If I was on your coast, I would get an STV. May be hard to find Hallett's and Eliminators out your way.

I think the boat would be determined on what type of boating you can do. If you have big waves in your lake, get something with some freeboard. If you have calm water and like to go fast, get an STV or something where you can go fast for miles. If you want to enjoy life and your family, just get a pontoon boat.

I’m not opposed to shipping or driving out west. I’m solo most of the time. My ultimate end goal is a mach 26 or 25 Daytona so anything now would just be a stepping stone to get comfortable with something that runs faster than low 60’s

An Eliminator Eagle would be Sweet.

The Stoker is a flat water boat. They suck donkey dick in rough water.

But if you wanna be Ricky Bobby, Stoker all the way. 😎

Is this your first boat? What have you ridden in? Daytona's and cats in general handle differently and act uniquely on the water vs V Hulls.

Same with I/O , Whacker, and V-Drive, they all change the characteristics of the boat they push..... Then getting into stuff like Stokers with a ModVP design handle uniquely as well as the several variations on a ModVP Tunnel like the SST Stokers.

I'd be asking for rides and going on test drives if you have not actually ridden in the hull you dream about..👍;)

I wanted a certain boat when I was young, only to find out it handled completely different than I expected, and it turned out I did not want it anymore after riding/driving it.

It would be my first personal boat. I grew up boating and have free use of my parents 20 center console and help out with the maintenance. I’ve been on a friends 33 scarab avs and 36 concept. I’ve only ridden in a cat once and that was a tour boat ride in Charleston years ago. I think the hull was made by thriller powerboats.

I definitely would like to get some first hand experience in a few different boats before pulling the trigger. I wish it was as easy as test driving a car but hate to waste someone's valuable time.

Don't think about it like that, a water test is simply proving that it's sea worthy, nothing wrong with taking ANYTHING you are going to pay $20K+ for a ride and drive.

You are not wasting anyone's time, they want to sell it, you could be a potential buyer, that's how things get bought and sold everyday.

Never feel weird about asking to test drive anything you are paying for, if anything, be cautious about vehicles they WON'T let you drive...major warning sign.

That is very true. My issue is I'm not sure how one test ride/drive would be enough to tell how livable a boat is. I've ridden a few jet skis before and even on a relatively calm lake I find they aren't the most comfortable things so I know I'd never buy one.

My advice is to go buck wild lol. Drive as many boats as you can, something will click that you can focus on. I had the luck to have experienced a multitude of boats through out my life, so when I was ready to own, I already knew I wanted a Spectra 20.

Don't be afraid to charge out after your desires, test drive anything that interests you!

If you really want to clear your feelings of guilt towards test drives, offer to pay for fuel...a decent test drive should be around an hour, plenty enough for you to get a feel for how it handles/accelerates/turns.

I got a message back from the seller of that 21 Daytona. It is a 225 promax that has been gone through and ported to 260 specs. New pistons, rods, etc. Compression is around 140 psi and oil injection was removed

that's a good step in the right direction if your goal is a 25...
