This was opening day of the sporting crab season. The winds came up quickly and the waves got large. Even the big boats headed back to the bay. Unfortunately the same thing happened just two days later. Local fisherman don't go out in those conditions. It's usually people that drove two to three hours that don't want to just turn around and go home. I was sick to my stomach when I heard the news.

:( Sounds like an 11 year old was orphaned, lost his entire family. I hope there are some family members close that can take him in, and help him out.
Horrible situation. The kids had no say in the matter, and that sucks. I'm not an ocean goer, but 14ft seas in a smaller boat, I don't think I'd do.

I've been in 7-8' seas with white caps in a 21' boat, we got about a mile out and turned around, scary AF. Been in 6-7 rollers in the same boat and no big deal.

Sad deal. I'm glad he didn't lose both parents though. Amazing that he could survive, and even talk about it. I'd be a balled up mess.

The Polynesian’s sailed/canoed 1000’s of miles, crossing the Pacific Ocean.

It's pretty hairy in a 90' boat.

Such a sad and heart breaking story. That little man did an amazing job saving his life and going for help in hopes of saving his family. He has a lot of courage and maturity. I hope he will be alright in time. What a nightmare for the remaining family.

…My live aboard was at 34 footer and I have been in 10 foot seas coming back from Catalina… Fortunately it was not a V bottom so it just cut through the 10 footers… That little 21 foot boat probably went straight up and then came back down transom first … No way it could’ve survived 14 footers… Very sad deal for the 13-year-old and the rest of the family…
