Hey Peeps,

Today I took the boat (95 Ultra) to Nacimento, Launched with no issues, cruised out the 5 mph area, got moving about 50mph for about 6-7 minutes and my wife said she smelled burning! I looked at my gauges and the temp was on it's way to 225, I stopped and stut down and smoke was comming from the engine compartment vents, I got out the Ext and moved everyone to the front and slowley lifted the engine cover, no flames just alot of smoke, The rubbuer hoses on the exhaust manifolds were burning, nothing else looked burnt, used water to put them out, Got towed into the marina ($85.00 later) Once on the trailer the inside of the out drive looks like it was burning nder water???

Any ideas?????

So for now off to Big Bad Bubbas for dinner & beers:beer

Yep.

No cooling water through the exhaust burned through the connecting hoses to the outlets.

You're lucky the exhaust outlet was above the waterline. Otherwise you would have been swimming.

And then you'd be trying to find Later to help you raise the boat.

Yep. Those exhaust hoses need water introduced or they melt. That alone can sink a boat.

EDIT: Lost out to Alan by one stinking minute. :)

I don't think they cover mechanical failure, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Although depending on your deductible, it may not be worth them jacking your rates with a claim.

requires removing the drive in most cases

Sorry to hear that Dude...I had an outdrive boat once..it was economically bitchen',but couldnt deal with the prop deal in the shallow river water...went BACK to a "squirt" and wont change, but yeah..I'd go with the "impeller", (water pump)...Hope it all works out for ya Brother! :beer :)

Impeller gone bad. I had it happen about 4 years ago. The repair bill ended up at about $4000 becuase of damage to hoses, hydraulic lines, etc.
The heads were pulled off my motor and cleaned up. Fortunatly, no severe damage to the motor itself, just a lot of accessories.
As for insurance, Fire damage is covered. Mechanical breakdown and the results of that breakdown, are not typically covered.

First thing to fix is the over temp alarm. Then the pump, bellows, shift bellows, gimble bearing as the heat makes the grease melt and just run out. Change the outdrive oil, they do not like that kind of heat. Your mechanic will recomend more.

The engine did not appear to overheat, The temp was only at 225, when I shut it down, The oil is clean & doesnt smell or look burnt...
