Billet V-Drive Fill Caps

So after finishing the billet v-drive cases, I find out that the cute little fill caps I've been using, are not available anymore. CRAP! The cases are drilled and tapped 9/16-18 with an o-ring chamfer. I had all my web hunting buddies search for them with no luck. Lots of metric stuff, but no american. Well I guess I'll have to fab them myself. I'll just add it to my list of "THINGS I DON'T HAVE TIME TO DO!!!!!!!!!!!" lol.

So here we go, OP#1
Turn flange, thread, cut o-ring groove, and part-off. My cnc lathe is kinda big for these caps, so I chucked up a smaller chuck in the big chuck. The big chuck would hold the 3/4 stock, but the wind it creates, sucks the part into the jaws during the part-off procedure. This sends it at the speed of light, bouncing off the sheetmetal, destroying it. The small chuck doesn't create so much wind.

Now I chuck up the 5C collet spindle nose. This works well 'cause now I have a flange to pull against and the collet won't damage the threads. But I will not take a lot per pass because the % of thread I'm clamping on is small. So I turn the contour that will make the 1/2" hex look nice.

Now to mill the 1/2" hex. I used the same 5C spindle nose and just gently clamped in a 6" vise.

So now I will be making my own oil fill caps. Funny thing, I'm sure I burned more electricty than the part is worth!

FYI, All American CNC is in the middle of a move from Anaheim to Brea right now.

I don't know what your internet search team were calling these fill caps, but they are known as O-ring Boss Fittings, or JIC O-ring Plugs, and are all over the internet in 9/16 x 18 straight thread, in hex head, or socket head with flange for O-ring. Try looking at Parker or Swagelok, or do a search looking for O-ring Boss Fittings, or JIC O-ring Plugs on Google.

That's fine, I don't need any work done. I'm thinking future, these turrets are a pain to rebuild and it getting harder to find guys to do it. Thanks again for the contact.
