Gonna be in Houston for an aviation conference, love me some good Texas BBQ, also enjoy Tex/Mex. I’ll be staying out by hobby airport but I’m down to travel around the area for good eats. I have not spent any time in Houston other than passing through, any high points worth checking out? Reality is I’ll be tied up during the days so dinner will be my main chance to check out the place.

Hill Country BBQ in Hempstead. Great little off the beaten path family owned and operated place. Super friendly and OUTSTANDING BBQ. Everything I had there was trophy winning quality and generous portions. Check out the comments on their web page.

Did about 6 weeks in Katy, really only tried Rudys, it was decent. I would say the place we ate at most was twin peaks lol

Agree. Houston doesn’t have great BBQ so a trip to Buckeyes would better off IMOP. Not just for BBQ but the whole experience.

I haven’t had it yet, but my father has said Papas Steak house is pretty good. Part of the Papas chain of restaurant that are all pretty good.

I travel to the Seabrook area regularly for business and usually fly in/out of IAH. I will say that I have not found amazing BBQ in the area so far. There's a Rudy's which is pretty good, but also a chain. I've found the best BBQ in Austin and Dallas and haven't found a great spot around Houston so far. If you find something in the area please post it up.

As already mentioned, go check out Buc-ees if you have a chance. They have good snacks, Jerky, etc. Get some beaver nuggets to snack on and give their BBQ a try. It's not bad, but it's still gas station BBQ.

Lastly, if you are a bourbon drinker, look for a specs liquor location and see if they have Weller in stock. Weller distributes in the area, and about 70% of the time I can get a bottle at a specs at MSRP.

If you like seafood take a quick drive down to Kemah...some great oyster shooters on the pier. Not a bad harbor cruiser as well. Before the x-flight was done, that Wass the first time we got MaK on a boat.

Saw this place on YouTube. I plan on checking it out when I'm in Houston in a couple of weeks.

Heading up to Montgomery/Conroe sometime this week. If I get by there, I'll give this joint a go and report on it.

Tex Mex - Pappasitos is pretty decent for a chain (albeit a fairly small chain). It's expensive, but you get plenty of food and will not go away hungry. One on the Gulf Freeway, not to far from Hobby Airport. Yeah, the original Ninfa's on Navagation is still pretty dang good. Los Cucos is hit or miss. Some locations are horrible and some are very good. We only go to the small one on 290 and Jones Rd. Always good. Unfortunately, many of the good hole in the wall joints didn't make it through the scamdemic.

BBQ is subjective here. Everyone likes someplace different. For me: Killens - nope. Gatlin's - ok. Corkscrew in Spring, TX - on my list, I just hate waiting in line for hours. Truth - No, not ever again. Pit Room - was good when I was there a few months ago. Burns - good but haven't been back since retirement. Pinkerton's - pretty good.
Brooks Place - in Cypress, in an ACE Hardware parking lot. Just a trailer, but decent Que. Owner loves gun toters there, but heard they were closing down. I really want to try Ray's Real Pit BBQ Shack soon. It's near the defunct Astrodome and NRG stadium on O.S.T.

Here's you a list, but not too many on the south side of town.

Best BBQ in town is Truth but you have to get there early. Its been rated the best BBQ in Texas a few times.

I like pinkertons BBQ. They normally dont sell out and I think they have the best ribs in Houston.

i live in Houston and could rattle off 4 more places that are great!

If you want tex mex i would recommend Ninfas the original by downtown or go to El Tiempo Cantina. Those are probably the most popular tex mex places in houston.

No JOKE, Buc-ees and Spec's great combo for sure :)

Definitely both are good stops for me!

To clarify my comments on the BBQ - Where I go when I travel to the area is a bit on the outskirts and there are limited options for BBQ that I have found. I have not had the time to explore more of the area to find good spots, so if anyone knows of good BBQ towards Pasadena/Seabrook/Kemah please post up

Haven’t been to Houston, so no recommendations there specifically.

If you’re ever near a buc-ees, try the BBQ. It really is good, especially for a gas station lol.

On a side note, if anyone is ever in Dallas/DFW area, stop at Hutchins BBQ in Trophy Club. It’s by far the best bbq I have personally ever had.

A few places were closed tonight that looked like the better spots, ended up at papas bbq near the airport, not bad but nothing spectacular as I’ve had some legit hill country bbq in the past so I am ruined😂

Whatever I’ll take a bbq dinner in texas tonight and chalk that up as win👍

We're getting ready to hit central Texas again.
My own personal takes:

We've found we want BBQ smoked and off the smoker that day (morning).
That usually means a joint that is open Thurs thru Sat, sometimes Fri -Sunday.
Always roll in at opening or time the line early.

We love Blacks but often they shrink wrap, chill & re-heat the meat days later. Truth is guilty of that too.
Ain't the same, but still good.
Better to close those off days but they prefer to stay open.

Our absofuckinlute favorite is Goldies in Ft Worth. Second is Snows in Lexington.

Update. Made it back from Houston. Didn't go to Bar-A. But if you are ever in the Spring TX area go to 3rd coast bbq. Amazing. It's a restaurant at someone's house. Seating in their backyard. Awesome spot.
