I know the trs is an old drive. Don't hear much about them anymore other than parts are getting hard to find. So I was wondering what are some of the things to do to strengthen them up and make them last longer?

I have no idea what most of the failures are either.

I have been thinking about upgrading to konrads in a few years. Seems the right way to go, but it is expensive to do.

Looking online...sounds like the lower gears are the weak point They pit and ultimately crack.

I’d venture to guess that lots of drive oil changes will help. Other than that. ..start saving for bravos,#3’s, Konrad, Kaama, or arneson.

I know that if you put enough horsepower to one you will drive the prop shaft right through the front of the nose cone!!:D

Surprised to hear Kaama on here. Most people I know have never heard of them!

I have worked on a few Kaama surface drives over the years. We use to get all our parts from a place called Archer Marine. Check out the boat in the back this is a replica of Betty Cooks Kamma Scarab that I Race in NAMBA

Forgot to add:

Time to
Replace
Soon

At least parts are cheap for them right now. Just don’t overpower them.

Don't remember which but either the clockwise or counterclockwise rotation is desired due to being stronger, found out about it from those east coast guys. They love the trs. With the trans butter smooth shifting. They have there place like all things

Right hand rotation is the weak one. Buy how much weaker is it really?

The motors barry built for me are 485 hp and 587tq so do I need to worry much as long as I don't fly it much?

I've been reading online. Only thing I have found so far is to cryo treat the lower gears and shaft.

I also read the speed master 2 lower will fit on it. Will the ssm3 or 5 fit?

Yeah try not to load and unload them. Treat it like you would a bravo. Should be good as long as your not constantly slamming the throttle. They are slower than the bravo drives. Mainly why bravos took popularity. And the elimination of the trans created more interior space on smaller boats. Don't be scared there cheap and plentiful. Look on offshoreonly.

Not scare to use them. Just worried parts are only gonna get harder to find and cost of repairs. Plus finding people who know how to work on them.

Avoid the #2 like the plague. They were weaker than the TR and parts are impossible to find. The #2 is a TR top with a smaller bottom...so weaker than the TR. #3’s were quite a bit beefier all the way around. To switch to a #3 or 5 or any others is a whole new transom setup.

If you look on fleabay you will see arneson ASD-6’s show up from time to time. You won’t break them and they will make your boat faster.

So other than konrads, it's redo the transom?

Not necessarily, someone made/makes an adapter from TRS to Bravo, but you’ll have the same problems...you leave the transmissions in, and bypass the shifting in the Bravo. That or an endless supply of TRS’s in the back of the truck. Konrad just bolt up...simple and done. I’ll see if I can find anything on the adapter

Thanks. But if I upgrade it will be konrads or the arneson / kaama
