The boys are all playing ball and those of you that know me, know when I do something I go all in. That being said I’ve joined the board, I umpire, and I manage the boys. I figure I’d ask here first, and then go from there. I’m looking to build a batting cage in the backyard. Wondering if anyone has one they are ready to sell. I’d also be looking to buy a pitching machine and buckets of baseballs. Also looking for any umpire gear. Chest protector, face mask, shin guards, plate brushes, pitch counters etc. Jumping in with both feet isn’t cheap but these boys are only going to be young once. Plus I really like helping out with the community kids. I’ve been super blessed in my life so I like trying to give back whatever I can. I know this setup looks cheap shade tree, but I bought one when the boys were little and they used it all way through high school. When they were done with it the net was still good, and I gave it all away on Craigslist . It can be dis - assembled in like 20 minutes, but made it through 10 years of heavy weather and wind storms. I just staked it with concrete stakes and lath screws. Get a good L screen , a Tanner Tee, and maybe a tarp to hang at the back to save the net as well. I had the good jugs machine early on , but as they get older throwing from the screen will be where it's at. We had a good folding L screen for practice too and some pop up nets for stations . How big are you going to go? Id say no less than 12 feet wide and would suggest 15. If you can do 20 even better. The bigger you go the more you can do inside the cage.
Id say a minimum of 12 feet high. Its good to see where the ball travels. Maximum 15 feet high but 12 is perfectly fine.
now how long? remember a pitching mound at the high school level and on is 60 feet 6 inches. You need room front and back of plate and rubber for catcher to sit and whatever you want to do with the machine and type. I would suggest no less than 70 feet. the longer you go the more you can do.

You need to decide what you want to do inside the cage before you spec it out. Do you want to be able to throw full bullpens until they leave for college? 70 feet minimum. what type of machine? Iron Mike? Hack attack? 3 wheels? that will then dictate where you place the machine.

Ideally I would want about 75-80 feet. I would have my mound set. I would actually have my machine behind the mound so I never have to move it nor do the kids. And then have a hitting mat 60 ft 6 inches from wherever i deem the release point of the machine. Try to keep the machine stationary forever and be able to move the hitting area depending on the age level. ie move the plate forward to 48 50 54 and 60 ft.

When it comes to the machines......to me its all about auto feed and reps. For my kid id want him to come home from school jump in the cage do his tee work and then be able to just turn the machine on and go.....not many machines allow for that. Id also want him to be able to take as many swings as possible before picking up all the time....there are a lot of good machines out there that will do the job and the price range varies a ton. if it was sitting in my back yard id go iron mike all day long.....remember nothing not one machine will be able to simulate the timing of an actual pitcher....

DB . Do you still have a facility. A guy I work with has been using a facility in Savi Ranch but he has sold his equipment and is moving to Texas with his son who is a catcher for OLU. He needs anew softball place for his daughters.

Thanks for the response gives me some stuff to think about. This is the area I’m using. Right now I could do 60’. If I toss the swing set I could use that area to and go 70-80’. Width is about 24’ I’ve been racking rocks and moving them but I’m almost there. Oh and you are right about parents. Honestly most of the coaches care more about their egos than the kids. Umpiring has also humbled me white a bit.

Just installed a basic cage and pitching machine today for my girls.
They range from a couple hundred to several thousand.
I chose the Heater heavy duty machine bundled with cage from Amazon for about $600. Basic cage is 22' (they'll learn quick response time) I'll probably add a 2nd cage.
Girls hit a couple hundred balls today, so far so good.

My 11 year old doesn’t love it enough to get that far into it but he needs to have more batting practice. The coach does more fundamentals and bunting than live pitching and hitting at practice. It’s not helping the kids who need more reps at the plate. My son in particular.

He wants me to coach fall ball so I think I may go for it. I know baseball(didn’t play in HS, wasn’t good enough).

Any routines or good resources for drills anyone can share from youtube?

bobby we went out of business with covid. the gentleman who you are talking about has a very nice place. much smaller scale than we did but awesome nonetheless. His kid can flat out play too! as far as i know the facility is still open its called the K zone. My sons team used it about a month ago.

if your buddy is a softball guy there is a secret place on La Palma ran by Jen Schroeder who just crushes it. She puts out top notch girls non stop and they run tons of clinics there. I dont even know what its called but im sure if you ask around about Jen Schroeders place they will know! I think its on Lakeview and la palma....somewhere around there

Mike is a good dude. but dont think he has the facility experience and building cages experience than i do.....but if you want to talk about smashing softballs out of yards then hes yur guy! he was an alright baseball player back in the day for a fuckin titan....whats up Mike !!!

I measured my rv parking. I have 22’x55’ to play with.

One of the dads on my daughters team is photographer . Makes me light up seeing her play. I lived and died baseball/football, even into my 20’s in adult leagues. I really hope the kids enjoy it as much as I did.

Vic- the parents are worse than when I played 30 years ago. I help coach my 11 years olds team. Been pulled aside a few times being told their kid is a pitcher, he takes lessons. Well unfortunately, your kid isn’t good enough to pitch.

I packed away our pitching machine, small generator, dimple balls, heavies, wiffles, bownet, several years ago and forgot all about it. If making it to the Tracy CA area is doable I could drag it out and take some pics. Its a Caey Atec 2, 2 wheel machine. PM if interested.

I had a facility and cages for a while. I still give lessons but not as much. Get a cage that works for you but a machine (if you want one) that is reliable.

Reps and lots of reps don't matter unless they are good reps. Remember that

short cages are fine...to be honest most big league guys hate hitting off machines. almost all their work is off tees and short toss with as much live bp or coach bp as they can get. you can build onme hell of a training facility with the space you got....remember it comes down to who is using it and how much they are using it. not how cool and awesome it is....i wish i had the space to build my son a small cage in the garage.

I think part of the reason I’m getting so involved is because I feel guilty. My kids aren’t very good right now but it’s my fault because I’ve never worked with them. We are half way through the season and I’ve seen a huge improvement. They have potential for sure but I need to put in the work with them. Now that im coaching and we are practicing everyday they are having a lot of fun. Before they really couldn’t care less. My 8 year old is behind and it breaks my heart but we aren’t afraid of hard work.

Yeah, statistically there is zero reason to NOT swing at the first pitch. There is always a much higher % that it is going to be a fat strike so why go into the at-bat with only 2 strikes? And with the modern scouting and video equipment available, a batter can learn all kinds of info about a pitcher well before hand.

We both finished top 4. My boy plays at Huntington Beach HS.

All the NHSI teams are stacked. 16 of the best teams in the country. Lots of projected draft picks too

Also, you will rarely see OLU in the #1 spot in the PBR rankings as Borba does that. They should be though. We were #1 when they beat us and I can't remember if they took that spot.

Lack of customers during. and we followed the rules. We werent eligible for ppp and our landlord never gave us a break on rent even tho we never missed a payment…

Camarillo had numerous excellent sports programs for the boys and girls. In those days they were separated. There was also a local small business called, "Play it Again Sports". They had everything you could imagine, it was all previously owned. Maybe there's a similar store in your area?

Umpiring - when in 9th grade some of my buddies and I umpired for the local Little League - major level. The kids were great to work with. The parents ? ? Some, not so much. Recall even throwing a couple of them out of the park. As a 14 yr old umpire, that was a little dicey. Actually a number of the decent parents backed me up. Once, and only once, I called the Infield Fly Rule. Near instant total pandemonium. It was a riot, in a couple of ways. The League had an adult umpire coach, great guy, who trained us. The IFR was something he really taught well. He even warned us, Look Out this will definitely cause some problems. He was sure right about that. Good times and very fond memories. Enjoy.

Camarillo had numerous excellent sports programs for the boys and girls. In those days they were separated. There was also a local small business called, "Play it Again Sports". They had everything you could imagine, it was all previously owned. Maybe there's a similar store in your area?

Ifr always causes issues for us because not all divisions have the rule. Last weekend I had a pretty heated exchange about dropped thirds strike. If first base is occupied the batter is out.

Mike is a good dude. but dont think he has the facility experience and building cages experience than i do.....but if you want to talk about smashing softballs out of yards then hes yur guy! he was an alright baseball player back in the day for a fuckin titan....whats up Mike !!!

I would love to set up at least a couple lessons that’s not too far from norco. My boys need to learn to throw and swing properly first though so maybe get them a little further along first.

Well that was fun. Just finished up umpiring a junior game. HIC has been in and out of the hospital. Middle of the first inning he called me in from the a slot, and said he couldn’t do it, he was going to pass out. I told him no problem, I’ll do what I can, you gotta take care of yourself, this is just a game. I thought about grabbing his mask and getting behind the plate, but no cup and these kids were throwing gas. I called pitches from behind the mound and ran around trying to make sure I saw as much of every play as I could. This is how I’m going to stay young I gotta be up at 3 but I’m pumped up so I doubt I’m going to bed. Oh and my middle boy Noah went 4/4 and got the game ball. Good night for some Norco baseball

Bump!

We finished 3rd in our division heading to playoffs. My 11 year wants to pitch in fall ball and work on hitting at the house. I decided I’m coaching him in fall ball. I told him I expect effort and hustle if I am going to coach you. Understand I will expect a lot out of you during practice and it’s not personal. You need to be a good example for your teammates at practice. He said ok dad.

Not sure what happened but last week he started putting some velocity and power into his throws. Looking forward to the journey.
