I never heard exactly what this guy did. He was the father of a kid down the street when I bought my first house. Good Mormon family, really nice. He was probably about the age I am now, late 40ish? I assume he was possibly taking things to the Mormon groups down there he shouldn't have, or maybe didn't pay the proper "fees" asked of him. He spoke fluent Spanish, and his youngest son did his mission in Mexico City ten years after.
Not to steal the thread but I did know a private detective who "forgot" he had a pistol in a lock box under his seat as he crossed border... they pulled him over and found it... that was in mid 90s and I want to say he was in TJ jail [worst of em] and had to pony up $15K

Dunno how it is now, but 25 years ago had an acquaintance that did a few months. It was pretty much like a hostage situation. Family visited every week, and "rent" was paid. If payment was made, you ate and were kept somewhat safe.
I have a Family member who got arrested at border for having used shotgun shells in bed from a recent hunting trip. Slept on dirt and had rats crawling over him middle of the night in TJ jail. Said he has never been so scared as he was while in there. The story to get him out is even crazier.

Exactly it. Put some fear into the criminals instead of a vacation
A Friend came out not long ago and had to go straight to rehab. He did more drugs behind bars than when he was out. Had a cell phone and a TV. I always wondered why he kept going back.

Fishd00d posted this on race-dezert yesterday:
"The driver from this incident had a hearing today in Baja. He’s still in jail and has been denied bail. He’s basically being charged with counts of Involuntary Manslaughter. His trial is set to start within 6 months.

He could possibly still get bail at some point if they can get a pardon from all of the families involved and pay for all of the medical bills in Baja and any costs from the incident. The truck is in impound until that is all taken care of as well.

So it could be a while unless the team owner dumps a bunch of cash……"

Not sure it would be much different in the US. Imagine a mexican here, does the same thing at the Mint. Admitted hotdogging, could very well be charged with manslaughter and as a very high risk of flight would likely be denied bail or at least have it set very high and I could see the truck impounded during an investigation as well. Likely be a trial and huge fines if not jail time. Plus of course civil litigation which is likely from this Baja incident also. Sad deal all around.

When you fuck up, it comes with consequences....and that's the end of it. Sucks for the guy, but it wasn't anyone's fault but his if the investigation found no fault in the equipment. Sucks worse for the guys hurt and dead and their families.

I may be mistaken but I believe under the Mexican legal system the families can accept a financial settlement for the people that died and this all goes away.

100% the truck has a mechanical throttle. its an 8 stack setup, there are no vacuum accessories to leak as some have eluded to.

if i had to guess on what happened, i would bet he hit the throttle and brake at the same time by accident, or a water bottle or some other foreign object got caught in the pedals.
