A few years back I had the same experience in my attic. My bucket was just a water filled construction bucket with a 1X4 ramp and it took out a whole family of rats...about 5 of them, and they all looked young. My best night with my bucket lid trap was what appears to be a family of seven. After that I'd get one or two, then finally nothing and after awhile I put it away.
I've encountered that with other types of traps as well regardless if it's gopher, mice, rats or even squirrels. You'd almost swear they were communicating some warning to others --- but how, the ones that fall prey are dead ?
I never caught a single rat with the electric traps.
I set a few sticky pads and they never worked until a lone straggler found it last summer...what a f*in mess.
I've always taken them out by snap traps set against the joists.
