A Peoria man that was going to be the best man in a friend's wedding was accidentally shot and killed near Prescott by the groom-to-be. The shooter told police he thought the gun was empty before intentionally pointing it at the victim and pulling the trigger.

These negligence killings piss me off and bring back really bad memories. In 1986, Steve, one of my best friends and former roommate, was shot while deer hunting in Southern New Mexico. Another person in the party had shot a deer, and he went running down a steep hillside to inspect his trophy.

He was running with his rifle over his shoulder, and when he stumbled and almost fell, he squeezed the trigger. The bullet hit Steve in the left arm near the shoulder and severed the brachial artery. There were also two other persons present. Between the three of them, no one thought to tourniquet the wound with a belt. They were miles from a hospital.

Those idiots watched him bleed out and die. It was all I could do to keep from punching the shooter in the face at the cemetery after I had helped carry Steve's body from the hearse to the grave. His unbelievable stupidity had taken a good man from the Earth, and he had the balls to show up at the funeral and tell everyone how much he was suffering.

But justice was served. Two years later, Death came calling for the killer. He died in a single car accident between Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Karma extracted its price, and it allowed me to rest easier after that. I don't have any thoughts that he was treated unfairly by the Gods. He deserved that outcome.

This news story provides details of the Prescott shooting.

Calling it a "Camp Ground" is a bit of a misnomer. Looks like it is a resident style camp on good number of acres when viewed on Goggle maps.

So dumb It’s one of the first things you’re ever taught about fire arm safety. Even if you haven’t taken a course, it’s common knowledge. That guy should go to jail.

Earned my first CA Hunting License when I was 10 yrs old. It was required you take the Hunter’s Safety Class to qualify. I did and it was excellent. I will never forget the outstanding instruction and horrific photos of gun accidents. The last day included time on the firing range, with your parent or guardian. Have to wonder if that program still exits in CA? I kinda doubt it.

Story reads fishy. Hunting skunks? Wtf?
Also sounds like bad luck, Dieing from a abdomen wound after already having surgery.
Also all of the above applies. Pointing a weapon, basic handgun safety.

I can't stand these types of idiot firearm owners. Such simple safety rules, when followed there is rarely an accident, when ignored...well you know the rest.

know your target and whats beyond............

My boys got nerf guns this summer. I found myself telling them not to ever point them at each others faces and to move their fingers off the trigger when theyre running around. weird for me because I never had any of that training as a child..............

Took mine when I was 11 in 1995 somewhere in the Riverside, Ca area had skeet and target shooting at the end of the day.

Did my Final at the San Gabriel Police Department. They had an underground range, and we had to have a certain score to pass and get your license.

Same deal as the Bot Scouts use to earn your Shooting Sports Merit Badge.

I was shocked at how many kids, had never handled a gun before that.

Damn Ron...those memories still hurt.
Steve was a good guy...like really good guy.
I remember the incident just stunned us all.
Was it Anthony Sosa who shot Steve?

Sounds like the gun was in fact loaded.

The only way to die from an unloaded gun is getting beat with the butt of one, or pulling an unloaded gun on someone with a loaded one.

Thinking about all this…

Stupid BS!

Never point a fire arm at anyone unless you want to Blast Em Away ….

Pretty simple

Could it be that the "best man" came clean about a relationship with the soon to be bride?

Was going to make a joke…. But it wasn’t appropriate!

When our kids were little we did a lot of firearm education. I have a very realistic toy gun that we would leave out to see what the kids would do. They were trained to not touch it and notify an adult. Once we had them shooting small caliber weapons (age 6 or 7) I remember doing a spot check on my son and asking, "So what do you do if you find a gun that isn't yours?" His response, "Chamber check, mag check." He was not wrong, but not the answer I was looking for!

It's been over 30 years but I did also. They had the pheasant club back then.

One thing that always stuck in my mind was.
"Treat every gun likes its a loaded gun" or something like that.

I grew up shooting and could handle a 22 with supervision of course before I ditched the training wheels on my bike. My dad really raised us differently than most kids my age though. I am terrified every time I go to renew my CCW. Can’t believe 90% the other renewals consider themselves proficient.

I wish we did that would have been fun, mine would have been end of 70's first of the 80's.
I’m pretty sure mine was at the old Riverside County Sheriff training facility the year before they moved Ben Clark to where it is now.

If someone hands you a semi automatic handgun first thing pull the slide back and look in chamber, if a revolver release the roller and look.

I took my hunter safety course in 1970, at that time you had to be 12 years old to take it. I took it three more times over the years to accompany my kids and wife when they took theirs. My first one was at the instructor's home in Pomona, the other three were at Raahauge's.
