Solar Flares . . . Northern Lights . . . Aurora Borealis . . .
'Traditionally' seen in the fall / winter in Northern Latitudes . . . but I guess it can be seen periodically at random times.
Has something to do with the charged particles from the sun hitting the earth, and drawn to the magnetized poles. Hence 'Northern' . . . and usually in winter since there isn't enough darkness to see them in summer.

When I saw it in Canada driving home from Alaska, it reminded me of those big 'spotlights' they used to use for movie premiers, or in front of Movie Land Wax Museum . . . but shooting more parallel with the earth, and in different colors . . . plus moving a shit-ton faster.

I was solo driving and thought it was lightning at 1st . . . then I realized what it was . . . pulled over at a lake and watched it for a little bit . . . but was freezing my ass off and was on a mission to get home, so I split. LOL.
