Dudes, those who are audiophiles get it, Those who aren’t, dont

Holy shit, the left over stuff I had from my various builds, ended up my garage.

Holy shit, the sound quality from my left overs… in my garage.. freaking amazing..

Bad news. The louder I crank it, the better the sound, the bigger the stage. It pains me to turn it down. It needs to be cranked. Then close your eyes and you can see the stage and the depths of the music.

I can sit in the garage for hours, with this cranked.

Pioneer SC91
Bower Wilkens 686 S2
Definitive Tech SC 2000 sub

Cranking
Saliva, Def Leopard, Metallica, Ozzy, Sabath, Kid Rock, on and one.
The Struts- Pretty Viscous
Odis Smith- thinks that correct
The Beachs- Blame Brett
Foster the people
Magic Giants
Moon Taxi
Greta Van Fleet
Who remembers Tesla - Love is all around you.

Ohhh just remembered Queensryche is coming up next.,,, now thinking of Ratt, Dokken, White Snake,

Haaahhh Winger- 17 wow, thats a blast from the past

I listen to lots of stuff most wouldnt think, but I have to listen to certain music on high quality systems. If not its painful.

Whats truly amazing is the sound stage those little 686s have. Especially when its cranked, combined with the vocal quality.

Show me a better set of speakers for the $$$.

Had to pour my fist bourbon of the evening..

I truly enjoy high quality sound systems.

Somebody just got called out, cause I need to see what your running!

My garage is 850-900sq ft, by redneck math measurements.

Straight up over the windshield division bar! The bottom of the old Tchnics cabinet of one of them. (Only pic I can find) Being 16ft up though, hard to do much. It gets fairly loud, but the clarity is lacking due to both budget and acoustics of a large metal box.

My garage is completely drywalled.

There are tons of smoking deals I find on FB Mktplc… but thats not gonna fix the metal building part.

Seriously, those little BW 686s rock my garage, for those that are interested, they are on Ebay all the time for $300-$400 a set. Again they are hard to beat for the money.

But my true in the house system is BW 804s. Below is a image I snatched for www, to show what my home theater is running.

If you watch DDay with Tom Hanks in 4k, your ducking for cover with these speakers.

I agree. Years and years of huge systems in my cars couple with shooting and age my hearing isn’t great! The 12 12” JL’s I had in a lifted suburban probably didn’t help. But MAN there’s something about “feeling” your music.

I used run Old school Cerwin Vega CV15, if my memory is correct. My son talked me out them.

Butyour garage system probably kicks my ass…
I used to have 15Ts modified with a tweeter. I could get concert level db. Now I have 12” JBL stage monitor's. Just took my stuff back out. Damn may have to fire it back up.

I'm not an audiophile. I can't afford to be one, and the other reason is I have tinnitus and I can't really hear the difference in subtle changes made to my system, or slight nuances with different phono cartridges. That, and I think a lot of audiophiles are full of crap about the things they claim to hear.

I collect BPC. Black Plastic Crap.

That said, I run components of my old Onkyo system I bought in 1989. Most recently, Mobster hooked me up with a Yamaha MX600 that I'm driving 4 Event 20/20 monitors at 4 ohms = 360 watts per channel (x4 channels). I also run 3 subs, including a Mirage 12".

I also stream Tidal in HD/lossless format with an iFi Zen MQA DAC.

I have a Pioneer PLX-1000 turntable with a few cartridges, but I mainly run an updated version of the respected Shure M44-7. The table is housed in a flight case, and my stereo sits on top of a rock solid Boos butcher block.

Today I am receiving a new phono stage - a Schiit Mani 2, and in a few days I will be pairing it with a new AT 95ML cartridge.

I also make my own speaker cables.

The most exotic set of speakers I own are EPI A500's, which were meant to keep pace with the awesome AR-9's - the baddest speakers i ever heard.

But all this crap fits into my 10X10 home office, so now I am chasing a better quality sound, than pure volume.

I collect vinyl weekly. I just received a limited edition pressing of Ozzy's show at the 83' US Festival (I was there 2-days). It came from the UK and arrived in less than a week!

And I also have a full DJ system, Furman Mixer, 800 watt Crown amp, dual Denon CD player, BBE Sound Maximizer, Denon dual pitch control cassette player (never used lol) and big ass Panasonic loudspeakers. I'm rebuilding this system too...trying to get 2 used Technics 1200's. I foolishly traded away my 1200's when the dual Denon CD player came out. Makes me wanna cry, the 1200's are spendy.

I always post my new finds in the song thread.

LOVE IT!

I also have a pair of CV VS120's....but they are too big for my little room. Personally, I think modern speakers are more efficient. Heck, subs weren't even mainstream when some of the old speakers were made.

Did you get that table up and running, or is it on the backburner because of the new family? I used to keep reef tanks until my kid came along :D

No doubt, but most people have never heard quality audio and what a different experience it is from what they're used to.
I'm guilty!

If an audiophile tells me a $5,000 3 tier audio rack will make my system sound better, I intend to say no thanks, I'll spend my money on a thru-hull exhaust system and "gain 5mph" 😂

I remember the first CD I ever heard was Holst, Planets. But I kept hearing this odd noise. Kept replaying until I figured it out.
It was the musicians turning the pages of the sheet music. Tripped me out.

Sadly, my prized possession from 40 years ago languish in the utility closet, Dahlquist DQM-9 speakers. Most recent purchase was this Cambridge Audio amp. Really woke up my outdoor speakers, Origin Accoustics, with a Polk sub huffing away under the deck. I’ve got that outdoor system absolutely refined.

Yeah keeping the kiddos away has been a challenge.

Got a local guy to repair the carbon fiber tonearm for $200, it’s as good as new. VPI wanted $4500 for a replacement 😳
But then I found the cart was toast, so I had to get a replacement for it also. I’m into this thing for a grand and it’s not even mine LOL

Current setup is waaay overkill.
Im having a ton of fun playing with audio equipment that I could never justify paying retail for.

Mark Levinson 5805 amp. It’s a monster.

Mark Levinson 515 Streamer / CD

Mark Levinson 515 / VPI TT w/VAS Audio modified DL103 cart

Revel M106 speakers

Revel B8 subwoofer

Mark Levinson 5909 headphones

The weakness in my systems is typically the receiver/amp. Because I just cant decide what I want.

Speakers are a much easier decision for me.

For those that think you have to spend massive amounts of $$$ to ge high quality sound. I disagree and as you see in my original post, BW 686 S2, have amazing sound quality for used prices you can buy them for on Ebay or other places.

BTW I am looking up that Mark L amp listed above.

I just picked up a pair of JBL 62's. I love them. I have a pair of infinity overture 2 towers. One has a bad amp that I need to figure out how to replace. Im always on the look out for new speakers. My wife says I have a problem...

It's pretty insane. Weighs around 70 lbs, and is a true dual mono design. The circuits for left and right are mirror-images for an identical signal path.

125w @ 8 ohms
250w @ 4 ohms
500w @ 2 ohms

Bespoke phono stage
Class A headphone amp

My biggest complaint is that the thing puts out a ton of heat...first world problems

With the exception of the headphones, all ML gear is designed and built in the US 👍

Funny you say this. Once had an old audio sage tell me “when it comes to audio components, weight matters.” My Cambridge amp weighs 52 pounds. It’s a beast.

C2 your ONKYO system was my dream in the day, just couldn’t justify it, then a boat took all my money lol.

Right on! That Onkyo system cost me $2K in 1988! I'm pretty sure the car I drove cost me less than that. I saw a similar system on OfferUp today, including the cabinet, for $110.

Great to see you breaking out the old equip! Try some Caig Deoxit on the switches/dials, the stuff works wonders on crackling knobs. It also works great on cell phone charging ports. Youtube it out to get a better idea of how to use it.

I hooked up a new phone stage and discovered I have a serious feedback hum at high volume level. Been driving me crazy trying to figure it out, but I'm pretty sure it's simply the arm on the PLX-1000 turntable. Not ground related.

I posted the question over at AudioKarma, and apparently the hum is a known issue with the PLX.

So now I'm on the hunt for ranother turntable, I'm looking for a Technics...but not necessarily a 1200 - they are usually beat to shit/abused/worn out. Maybe another similar non-DJ model like 1300/1650/1700.

As boaters I'm sure most of us can afford decent stereo equipment. But for me, I like the stuff I grew up with and saw in the magazines like Playboy, Circus etc. Modern turntables just don't do it for me.

AK has a 562 page thread about classic stereo ads.

I’ll check out that contact cleaner, thanks. System sounded kind of hollow last night. I’ve never run these speakers, probably shouldn’t expect too much from them, they’re stage monitors. Friend of mine in the day had a signal generator, that’s how I found out my cabinet on my 15Ts was cracked. I’d be interested to see what these JBL’s spec at. Now to find some vinyl.

They got real pricey, like $13k to $15k. i love mine, my neighbors not so much. I picked them up from a barn, they were covered in pigeon ….like 2”! I completely had to do all veneer over.😎

OMG! A slice of heaven was just delivered from Japan.

I have been looking for a 1200, but because they are used as DJ tables, most of them locally are beat to shiat.

So I turned to sellers in Japan, and a couple of weeks ago a MINT condition SL-1200MK3D splashed onto the eBay scene. I researched the seller and read they are solid, so I contacted them off-list to avoid all the BS fees. I finalized the deal late Monday and today I received the table! WTH, 3-days from Japan! I had a similar experience with a piec eof vinyl I bought from England that arrived in less than a week.

Anyways, it's a Japanese model and uses 100V, and I'm still waiting for my step-down power converter from Amazon before I can power it up. The table arrived in its original box and packaging and it looks like it's never been turned on....frozen in time for 27-years.

More to follow next week when the rest of the parts catch up lol.

Fun! Those are worth some coin, too. The local used market is rough and littered with MK2's that everybody thinks are gold.

I'm still debating whether to get another table and mix again. I have a system too, but in 93' I traded my 1200's for a dual Denon CD deck. All I need is a table coffin, I have a couple of cheapo Stanton tables and my Pioneer PLX-1000. I also have many of my oldschool lights/truss....

I know this - I haven't picked up/physically touched a 1200 since 93'. The Pioneer PLX feels a lot sturdier/solid/heavier, but we'll see how they sound next to each other.

Thanks, that's a great idea. Some models have different voltage selections...so it sounds possible.

Another fix, that's commonplace in the audio world, is to use a converter for the Japan to USA electronics.

All good now... USA 120 stepped down to 100 Japan

MFKR…
My old school like 25 year old Boston Acoustics 10” Powered Subwoofer. The rubber around the woofer is so deterioted, and just cant get it to glue correctly. This is my garage set up, not my main set up…

So I went into Best Buy a bit ago. I was going to get a stand alone subwoofer and just replace it inside the old cabinet…

As I was walking into the store.. They had a ton of red tag clearance items out of the high end portion of the home audio section. So I get to browsing… and find a Martin Logan Dynamo 400 8” over 50% off.. $174.00… 75w RMS and 150 peak…

Bought it, got it connected about 20 minutes ago… Fuck me… just not enough power/bass… I have it cranked fully up and its just not what I am used to.

I am in pickle here… return it, and go back to plan A…

Step up and go buy that nice 12” 400w Martin Logan they have at 50% off, still over $400 for my garage…

MFKR… Am I going to regret not returning this… or just live with… ugggg…

The good news is the cigar is awesome, on a nice fall day in Reno area, with a high 64 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. BTW… the pigeons start roosting on my neighbors roof in about an hour, might be able to snipe a few with pellet gun…

Have you tried a foam repair kit for your existing sub? Simply Speakers

I bought new foam for my Cerwin Vega home speakers and it worked out perfectly.

Thanks, I looked at them… I see they have kits for most speakers, but didnt see any Boston Acoustics. I pretty sure it fairly universal.
Thinking it over.

The best news…
4 Pigeons on a rooftop about 75-90 yards away… Its sniping time.. LOL.

Call them and give speaker info and they will find the right kit. I had some JBL speakers and they got a kit for a whatever that fit perfect.
