I don't think Mandella. I couldn't zoom in, but nose doesn't look right to me and I couldn't see the sides. Still very cool though.

Went out to see the boat in Vista this afternoon(10 minute drive).
It’s a Mandella.
The rigging in it is pretty stout for a ski boat.
Check out the stringer rails and vdrive mounting/braces.
Even the plates have stiffners across under the turn buckles.
There are are no holes in the transom for thru-hull exhaust.
Real nice steering as well.
Just not your standard ski boat rigging for the mid-sixties.
The engine in it is just set in there.
It appears to be a 390. Nothing special.
The boat is in real good shape best I can tell.
It’s been sitting along time.
Be interesting to get it hosed off.
Gonna take some time to get it out of the slot it’s in.
Also it’s sitting about 2 feet off the end of the trailer, so that’s gonna take some figuring before it can be moved.

… kind of an interesting old Flatty… Having a hard time telling what the V drive is by looking at it on my phone🤷🏽‍♀️

… got a better look… Looks like a split case non-parallel shaft Hall Craft…

I’ll call the guy tomorrow they are out in. Roth county somewhere. It’s some people cleaning up an estate. I’m sure they are in the same condition as the flat bottom

Yes a 10 deg Hallcraft same as my Mandella was originally rigged . Sent the V drive to Tom Bently and had it machined to use casale gears and put a whirlaway in it . Wanted to keep it original .

@Clank123 Did you happen to see the Baja bugs or the convertible or the buggy?

Buggy is a Chenowith updated with some newer shocks. VW for power.
1 Baja bug complete with some nice parts.
Including a full cage.
Other bug less motor.
The fella there was pretty vague about the future of the cars.
Almost like he wanted to keep them.
Both Bajas were covered and I was getting the vibe he wanted me to look them over yesterday.
Maybe that’ll change next trip out there.
I’ll put an update with some pictures…hopefully.
There’s a lot of stuff in the shop.
Some of it interesting, most junk.
There was one shelf with 15 or so Bug doors stacked it a row.
Up on another shelf there was about the biggest chainsaw I’d ever seen…had to have at least an 8 foot blade on it.

As far as the boat goes…
It’s going to take a few hours of work to get it out of there.
A trailer and a Baja need to be moved along with miscellaneous junk.
Tires are flat on the trailer(single axel).
Boat needs to be moved 2 feet forward on the trailer.
Hitch is broken, but I think I can make it work to get back to Carlsbad on side streets.
One of the interesting things is the boat, except for the transom around the plate hardware, appears to have been prepped and shot with primer. Must have had an issue with the bow eye as all that area is repaired and there is no bow eye.

So the plan, if they can get everything moved, is to go get it on Saturday.
I really have no interest in restoring the boat at this time for myself.
I have restoration projects booked to keep me busy until at least this time next year.
Being passionate about these boats, I just can’t let it go to the dump.
If anyone following this wants it or knows someone that does, it yours.
@AzMandella this has your name all over it!!
If you want to come help pull it out Saturday come on down(you might need to buy my crew lunch and a few beers).
Too many old flatbottoms have been lost in situations like this…I can’t let it happen again.
Let me know!

Clank, what's a ballpark cost to bring one of these to fruition?

@Clank123 happy to hear you're going to save it, and I hope it finds a new home.

That appears to be the original engine, or at least a period correct model. The big two bolt inertia driven engagement type starter was used on the 1958-1962 FE IIRC.

Anywhere between the cost of some unistrut brackets to bolt the engine to the stringers....a few gallons of oil (some down the spark plug holes, some in the pan, some in the V-drive), a battery and weekend, to $60K and a year of someone's time to make it shine like new.

I usually get a bit past the first step before I lose interest and go find another stupid project that I want to start but won't finish.

You would have to post an armed guard if it was a long decker 😁
It all depends how far ya wanna go!
I haven’t been able to check the floors on this one. So there could be money to be spent there.
The hull appears to be in great shape so glass work should be minimal.
Vdrive needs to be gone thru.
Paint…how wild ya wanna go!
Most all the rigging is there.
Needs tanks.
I’d do back to back bench seats.
Engine needs to be gone through.
It’s a 390 so plenty of power, plus it’s period correct.
Wiring and plumbing (I’d keep it old school with rubber lines and hose clamps.
Can’t forget the trails!
Most boats that I do the complete rigging from a bare hull usually takes me between 250 and 300 hours.
I would say given what’s there WZuber was in the ballpark depending on the direction you want to go…25-30.
Maybe a little less, maybe a little more👍

Agreed. Certainly the correct engine for the time period.
This is definitely not the OG engine.
Like I have said when you look at the rigging on it, sure seems it was more that a ski boat.
Looking inside the transom, it has never had holes drilled for through transom exhaust or had the inside of the gunnels relieved for exhaust tubing.
kinda interesting.

That's the route I took with my 427. It seemed sacrilegious to put braided hoses and those nasty red and blue anodized fittings on it.

Vicky would kill me if I brought up bringing home another Mandella. The long (marathon) deck is killing us.
Lou (A1 canvas) has 2 twenty-footers), our oldest son has one (a shot deck- aka krazy kraut), Lou (senior) has the long (marathon) deck currently at Eddie's, and cousin Ken has Lou senior's original 1963 short deck.

Go for it, you still have the advantage of being able to out run her. Lol
You guys are doing a good job of keeping the Mandella dreams alive.

So we drug it out of the carport yesterday.
Power washed it on the way home.

While there is no badging or paperwork,
I do believe this is a Mandella.
Also, based on what I see after the clean up I think it has some racing heritage.
As I’ve said before, the rigging in it(Vdrive bracing, aluminum run on the stringers, plate stiffners and an adjustable plate as well as there have never been holes drilled in the transom for exhaust bells) is super stout for its era.
Definitely not a ski boat.
Check out the adjustable plate mechanism..,appears to be an old VW emergency brake assembly!
Pretty cool!
90CBBE2A-F344-4881-8D5A-B5FB6AC611E5.jpeg

Then with the leaves and dirt washed away, I see this.
4005259B-8BBD-47E5-9FB7-31C91C53FC37.jpeg

What has to be Mounts molded into the floor to hold fuel fuel tanks that run the length of the boat from ahead of the engine to the transom on both sides of the boat.
There is zero evidence that there have been any type of seats mounted behind the driver.

Oh, and I found the fenders for it!
E646837D-52A8-4EB3-8ADF-3F2761DACF15.jpeg

All in all, a pretty cool find.
Who wants it!
Come and get it!
I’ll need a 100.00 bill to take the guys to lunch that helped me get it out from where it was and back to my house.
It was not an easy extraction!😂

It's a Mandella or a splash
Your much more of expert on Mandellas than I am, but for me, and all the boats I’ve scouted over the years, the splashed boats(Gaylords come to mind) don’t have the signature curved transom.
Also give the age and rigging it hard to believe it’s a splash.
What are your thoughts?
