I just got my latest electricy bill. I'm not happy.
A) it is way more than last month when all the Christmas lights were on. Lights went up in Nov. and came down about Jan. 4 or 5th.
B) It says billing period starts Dec. 27
C) This is over $300 more than I have ever been billed even in the summer.

The bill has so many different things being billed for I can't begin to know where the changes are occurring. To make matters worse I only have one meter but there are three separate homes on the property. Both tenants are single, hardly ever home so they don't use much, and both have been here for 2+ years. Yep something is definitely happening at night.

My Dad used to use this statement allot. "Don't own anything that eats while you sleep!"
I used to think to myself what the hell does that even mean. Well if he were alive today I'd thank him.

Space heaters jacking things to 80 degrees or higher? Those things gobble electricity.

I do see you received a $14 discount. LMAO that's like getting a tax refund that was less than the stamp.

damn .. 52 cents per kwh…. Fuck me…

I think NV Energy is like 12 cents…

If your gonna stay in CA, then solar/ energy storage should be on your priority list… if not, better start figuring out how to reduce your energy usage.

Time to check out the tenants and maybe add meters to each house.... as @rivermobster said, looks like they are doing something at night... Did any of them get a new EV? Maybe an indoor grow.... you never know...

Seems Newsom's cronies in the Public Utilities Commission decided once again what is best for them. Mine went up by 60% as well.

Take a look at the newly increased Wildfire Fund Charge. We are paying for Edison's fuck ups!

This happened last year.
More demand for gas in the winter, and the price/therm goes up alot, that price is being extended to the customer..

What should piss all of us off, is Biden recent actions on Natural Gas industry. Because if you think these supply/demand disruptions are expensive… Wait a few years after Bidens recent decisions take effect… We will be praying for todays price/therm

I have solar on my vacation house. I make between 12 and 13 mega watts a year. It paid for itself in 2 years. if I lived in the house full time I would owe money. Since it’s a vacation and not lived in full time, I over produce about 4 mega watts. ZERO Electric bill. It’s one of the best decisions I have made

One tenant is frequently not home at night. He has a gas wall unit in ~900 sq/ft. But he runs a computer using multiple screens. Maybe a Bitcoin miner? I dunno.
Other tenant I think may be my culprit. Essentially a 1000 sq/ft of studio apt. No laundry or kitchen, just a countertop refer, coffee pot. He has a window banger A/C which he also uses for heat. I think it is 220v. But again he has lived here for as long as we have. Seems like a new problem.

You need a Fluke with a Clamp Around Ammeter…

Right before you go to bed, check the load on each of the feeds to the apts…
You will quickly see which one is pulling the most energy.

Then give both of them a warning. If I get another bill like this one, I will be forced to pass the cost to you…
That should solve the problem. Cause moving sucks, and no wants to see their bills go up.

A simple side by side comparison of your past bills will tell you if the increase in the bill was based on usage, increased rates, or a combination of the two. If you're using more power, I don't see how this is a "get out your lube" PSA.

SCE has no control of what happens after the meter....

My tennants had an $800 SCE bill this summer. Swore they didn't run the AC during the day. Man and his stay at home wife move out in July, leaving the single brother living there as sole occupant and the bill dropped to $300 the month after she left. That woman had the power hungry LCD TV on all day long and the AC set to 70 for sure.

In the past year our electric bill and gas bill have almost tripled. Also we use the wood stove for 1/2 of the house - about 1/3 cord a month.

Will a 220v window a/c and heat combo use more $$$ than a similar 110v?

I live in a forest so solar ain’t an option.

All I’ve done is I don’t heat the house above 60, all my lights are now LED and I unplug any small appliances I’m not using.

I also make sure the things like heaters and other large systems are in good repair, and I own high efficiency washer/dryer and other appliances.

Everyone whines about the minimum wage spike in CA, but the other side of that is the cost of living is spiking higher, faster and harder.

The minimum wage hike is partly to blame for the cost of everything else increasing.

Just cut down the forest. Problem solved!

It's that window AC unit. I'm guessing it probably also has a heating element besides the heat pump. Perhaps it has lost its refrigerant and isn't heating enough, so the element (resistive heat) is sucking up the kWh. Or your tenant likes it warmer this year...

The bill was always pretty reasonable up until the last year. But the increase just Nov. Dec. and Jan. seems to not reflect reality.

I am right there with you. My bill fro December and January were well over $300 and I have NEVER paid that much. The xmas lights always rose the bill a little, but this is outrageous.

It also could be a short to ground not enough to trip a breaker the fluke meter with amp clamp or just watch meter and start turning off circuits you can narrow down a draw pretty quick

Yeah I guess this is the route I need to go. Get the clamp and start chasing wires. There are parts of this house that are still knob and tube. My electrician has replaced just about everything that can be reached without seriously tearing up the house. Almost 130 years old and hasn't burned down yet, but it does have some "creative" engineering in places.

This is what we all get when you have to keep these fucking electric cars charged! Did any of us really think that our electric bills weren't going to go up significantly. Man, my county voted to raise electric 20%, starts This Jan. F-ing CROOKS!!!
Here's my rant as always. But just remember folks, the Democrats is the party for the little (POOR) people remember. OK, so since Bidumb has walked into an illegitimate presidency, everything has skyrocketed in price, food, groceries, gas, (which its coming down right now, why? I believe its because the election is coming up this year) electricity, EVERYTHING it seems. That is if you can go and hopefully just buy it if its even in stock. F-off democrats, YOU SUCK!

I can't understand the usage numbers because we work hard to keep the lights off in unused rooms, heat set to 68, no TV or numerous energy sucking appliances. In my 2000' house we only have 3 people living here and my son works 40 hrs and spends many nights at his girlfriend's place. One tenant is retired and does nothing other than sit in front of a computer surfing YouTube. The other tenant seems to pretty conscientious about running the A/C in the summer. He lives alone and works full time. Weird dude who seems to nothing but sit in front of his computer screens too. On the other hand, he is Chinese and keeps lights and music going 24/7 but his place is all energy efficient lights and still only about8-900 sq ft.
I know we have a refrigerator that is working much too hard (long story) and a freezer in the garage, but again, my concern is the change from Nov and Dec when we did a lot of entertaining, to January when we have done nothing. August and Sept were only around $750-850 running the AC all the time plus a bunch of fans.
Is my price per kilowatt hour much different from the rest of souther California???

Hooooly shit!

That's about four times more than I pay.

I apologize for posting this long and sort of difficult to read stuff below. But don't just skim over it. This is what passes for serious analysis of the conversion from fossil fuels to a carbon free power generation and distribution system.

I've posted before that a Stanford University study claims it's possible to convert the entire electrical generation and distribution system of the US to wind, solar, hydrogen, and hydroelectric sources and eliminating fossil fuel use for electrical generation. Remember what you were doing in 1995? The author asserts this can all be accomplished by 2055, the same passage of time between release of the movie Forrest Gump and today. He displays about the same mental capacity IMO.

This includes replacing the entire electrical distribution system nationwide. It assumes the construction of underground thermal energy storage facilities millions of times larger than what exist today. It envisions wind and solar farms that would cover a geographical area larger than the entire states of Oklahoma and Indiana. The study has received worldwide acclaim as the answer to fossil fuel use.

But, unsurprisingly, this study was evaluated by a panel of 21 experts in the field, and was found to be riddled with errors, wildly implausible assumptions, and conclusions that render the entire work invalid. In other words, it's bullshit.

I've posted below a couple of excerpts from the abstract, or executive summary, of the document. First, this story printed in Forbes magazine gives some background:

Last week, twenty-one prominent scientists issued a sharp critique to one of their own. Mark Jacobson of Stanford said America could easily become 100% renewable by mid-century, but refused to acknowledge sound scientific principles in his research and address major errors pointed out by the scientific community.

The critique is so unusual that the group of scientists only decided to issue it when Jacobson refused to correct obvious scientific errors even as he began to seriously influence public policy and political action.

With me so far? These snippets provide some detail of the findings by the scientists. Here we go:

...Jacobson et al. [Jacobson MZ, Delucchi MA, Cameron MA, Frew BA (2015) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 112(49):15060–15065] argue that it is feasible to provide “low-cost solutions to the grid reliability problem with 100% penetration of WWS [wind, water and solar power] across all energy sectors in the continental United States between 2050 and 2055”, with only electricity and hydrogen as energy carriers.

In this paper, we evaluate that study and find significant shortcomings in the analysis. In particular, we point out that this work used invalid modeling tools, contained modeling errors, and made implausible and inadequately supported assumptions. Policy makers should treat with caution any visions of a rapid, reliable, and low-cost transition to entire energy systems that relies almost exclusively on wind, solar, and hydroelectric power...

...The study assumes a total of 2,604 GW4 of storage charging capacity, more than double the entire current capacity of all power plants in the United States. The energy storage capacity consists almost entirely of two technologies that remain unproven at any scale: 514.6 TWh of UTES (underground thermal energy storage) (the largest UTES facility today is 0.0041 TWh) and 13.26 TWh of phase change materials coupled to concentrating solar thermal power (CSP). To give an idea of scale, the 100% wind, solar, and hydroelectric power system proposed in ref. 11 envisions UTES systems deployed in nearly every community for nearly every home, business, office building, hospital, school, and factory in the United States, although only a handful exist today...

The examination by those 21 scientists reveals the study is a farcical fantasy. This is the ideology of the left. It'll destroy our country.

OMG still knob and tube my understanding from Electrition friend is that shorts to ground would be very easy with that style of wiring
I did a remodel on a house about 10 years ago with knob and tube on part of the house that we ended up replacing all the electrical.
the Electrition that did the work was surprised the house had not burned down already by what he found it had a few blackened areas that he said were shorts one was a rat just the skeleton was left.
put a smoke alarm in the attic and or basement may give you a little more warning.

Running a $457 (winter) to $840 (summer) credit on our SCE bill with Solar / Powerwall.
Charging an EV and keeping the the RV plugged in as well.

Haven't had an electric bill in almost 2 years and never had to take into consideration Time of Use peak / off-peak KW cost. Just plug and play anytime.

$400 + a month less on our Shell gas card charge because the EV is burning sunlight on wife’s work commutes as well.

I think I'll air condition the garage.

Does Tesla hold a capital account to replace the batteries in the future or is that up to the system owner?

There was only one way out from under this in California and that train left the station.

Unsurprisingly SCE's done pretty well since inception as have most of publicly owned utilities.

Well I work for a SCE sourcing contractor and the things we have to do to comply with the California zero emissions will reflect heavily on our SCE bill. Just like the de-commission of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) that we are still working on that will be paid for over the next 50 years. So hold on to your wallets it's going to get worse.

I find it interesting that most posters are focused on the outrageous SCR rates and not on WTF is going on at this residence that could be the source of consuming an over 3KW average continuance load, 24 hours a day, during what should be a period of less consumption unless you're heating with electric wall heaters and plug-in under desk units.
I'd be contacting SCE and requesting a study and examination of the meter itself if your actual load devices can't justify those numbers.
Also, why has it climbed from an already high average of 61KWH a month two years ago, and is now at 81 ??? That's a substantial increase --- something's off.

Maybe they recently installed a heat pump to replace gas furnace? Our electric bill is way up due to that. This is our first winter with it. I keep trying to get the wife to put on a sweatshirt and long pants in the house, but haven't had much success. Our last electric bill was as high as the summer. Gas bill was nice and low though, but probably not enough for the trade off.

On a tangent my work from home neighbor lady is getting laid off from her solar hiring job. I'd say (from an outside view) that the new NEM 3.0 would be responsible for that.

Modern heatpumps are extremely efficient, the glaring exception being ---- If for some reason it's going into Emergency Heat Mode. That mode if the option has been installed in yours, reverts to 100% electric strip heating when the unit is in Defrost/De-icing Mode, or in the event the outside compressor section fails.
Yes you will see an increase over your previous gas FAU electrical usage, but unless your climate is frigid, or your home is lacking insulation or leaking like crazy, it shouldn't be an extreme jump.

I mean a couple space heaters throughout the house 24/7 could get the numbers up.

Those window units pull 4.8kw.

Must be something like that, especially when you consider that the summer months are more in line, but the usage soars with the onset of cooler temps. Then to climb another 20KWH in two years for the same period, somebody's doing something spinning that meter at that rate.

I’ve had offices throw breakers left and right from people bringing in their space heaters lol. Usually an older building that has had the same circuit tapped onto 55 different times.
