Is anyone growing these?
We have a plant that is over 2 seasons strong here(because the weather is awesome😉)
While we have eaten many, given away many, they keep coming!
We are letting some go to flower.

I’m wondering if I can get them to seed?
@wash11 ? Any idea?

We use our pressure cooker, once up to pressure about 13-15 minutes if they are large ones. I always slice up one garlic clove per choke and stuff inside the leaves. Squeeze a little lemon on top before cooking and throw in the two halves of the lemon in the pot as well. dip in melted butter or a Mayo with a good mustard mix is always tasty as well.

We are not growing them, but after seeing how cool the plant and flowers are, I may have to plant one or two.

Wife trims off the thorny tips. Brings water (enough to cover) with olive oil, 3-4 smashed cloves of garlic and Italian seasoning to a boil. Dumps in the chokes and cooks until tender. Served with mayo or melted butter for dipping the leaves.

Beware, as Stymie on the Little Rascals once said, "That may have choked Artie, but that ain't gunna choke me!"

Now I have to grow some.

Lure seafood restaurants serve our favorite way.
Castroville they harvest 18 per plant.

The Lure took it off the menu the last couple times we were there. very disappointing because they do grill them to perfection.
Castroville, always stop at the giant artichoke heading through and pick up some fried battered artichoke hearts. another must

first,
I was just given 2 big heads of theses. Whats a good recipe to cook or eat them?
i will take scissors and cut the top of the leaves off to get rid of the thorns.

then cut in half, or sometimes I do in 1/4's.

scoop out the center section with a spoon.

i boil them till they are not fully cooked. stick a fork in the heart, it should still be firm and NOT soft.

while I am boiling them, melt a stick of butter, throw in some soy sauce and a splash or Worchester sauce, and minced garlic., maybe even some finely diced cilantro.

once they are done in the pot, I immediately soak them in ice water.

then slather on the sauce.

while all this was going on, I would be heating up the grille, using mesquite or other wood for smoking. the trick is to soak the wood in water so it doesn't burn but puts out a lot of smoke.

then throw them on the grill. you have to watch them as flames want to shoot up. thor ice on the grill if in flames kick off. grill smoke them on each side and keep them moist with your sauce.

you wont have a hard time getting anyone to eat them.

Those look awesome. I've tried several times to get them to root in the soil I have with no luck. I am going to give it another try. The related thistles grow like weeds here.

Thanks for another project.

We haven't had them seed but once planted they stick around like herpes. We don't water them, they just come back every year a bit bigger than the previous year!

I prefer to steam them instead of boiling. Have a few plants going now. When Costco has them it's the best spot to buy for the price.

I had them at Lure just today at lunch along with the Alaskan Halibut.
Comp’d meal. Excellent.

Giant Artichoke once was Time Magazines restaurant of the year. Love that place.

Awesome news. Might have to take a half day and go up for dinner. Or hit ‘em up this weekend.

I cut the top off, and boil / steam in few inches of water (I don't completely cover them in water). Sprinkle some seasoning on top, spoon some beef buillon (or better than buillon) over the top, then drizzle some olive oil on top and in the water. Cover and cook for 30-45 minutes. Check the water level after 30 minutes or sooner to see if you need to add more. The bullion makes it great. Spoon on plenty.

I also like to cut the top, boil most of the way, cut in half, clean and grill with some oil. As mentioned above.

We did a mile 8 walk here in Italy on Sunday from Larino to Ururi on one of the ancient sheep tracks (tratturi) where shepherds once used to herd sheep and cattle between the highlands of Abruzzo and the plain of Puglia. We were picking wild artichokes and asparagus along the way and cooked them for lunch. Good times.
