Is taking it to Art Carr out of the question?

His shop is in HB:

(I dunno if he's still alive but the shop is still there. I had him do some mods to an E4OD in my Expedition back in the day, super cool guy:thumbsup)

Does it only happen when in gear? Is it possible it could be something in the driveline or V-drive seeing as it happens only in gear?

I dropped mine off at steve culhanes in Elsinore this morning. The guy build some outstanding off-road trannies. He said he has done alot of v-drive too. You could try giving him a ring. Sorry I don't have the number in front of me but you can google his name

Both Art and Steve could help you, I would agree that it sounds like the front pump... Does the whine change with RPM when in park? Steve was one of Art's best builders back in the day when I worked there...

I had some trouble with mine last year and ended up rebuilding it myself with the help of Jake at Jakesperformance.com. I bought a kit from him and he provided all the technical assistance you could want. I also pulled together a .pdf file of a complete TH400 rebuild manual. It was my first rebuild and completely successful with his help. If you want to give it a try, it was't bad at all. From what I understand, it's a great trans to learn on.

If you do it and would like the manual PM me with an email.

replaced fluid and added lucas but the wine was still there intermittent. looks like we are going to pull the th400 and rebuild. just to be safe. can you just replace the pump? this will be my first rebuild.

the boat ran great and we picked a great week to stay (minus weather) because the schiada notta regatta was going on. nothing like the hum of a v-drive

I sent the manual.

Replacing the pump would be about the easiet thing you could do. It's the first part to be removed. I am certainly not an expert, but there are no bearings in the pump. I will be surprised it that's where you wine is. A quick inspection of the gears in the pump will tell you.

We have 7 New Vdrive T400's in stock polished and ready to shift. We also have 3 in stock with 5 gear planetary gears, extra clutch packs, roller bearing output tail housings, billet servo covers, hd deep pans, TCI reverse pattern valve body and a higher first second and some gave higher 3rd. We also have some polished more standard transmission in stock. We have a core exchange deal as well. Anyway, I am sure all those other venders can help you, but if you need it in a hurry, call 805-376-6077 m-f 9-5 PST. All transmissions are DYNO tested.
