I'm all for rights to own guns. Hell, I think you should own as many guns and ammo that your wife will let you. :)
But what I don't understand is the need for something like an AR-15. Do we as civilians really need theses?

Am I missing the point on the practicality of the use besides taking it out in the desert and shooting TVs?

Flame away.

Becoming a very popular hunting rifle. I don't personally own an AR-15, but respect the right to own one or more.

It's not the guns killing people, it's mental cases and terrorists.

what I don't get is why people think an AR is some super duper special weapon or "military grade". there really isn't anything special about them other than they look scarier that a standard wood stock Mini 14. its a semi automatic rifle, and in 223 or 5.56, really not all that powerful. There is far more hype around them than deserved if we are being honest.

Trust me...there are far more exciting rifles out there. These just become the cool kid on the block that the market took hold of and blew up to make them easy to obtain, build and modify.

Actually, the AR15 is arguably the most "practical" gun in existence.

For everyday hiking and fishing growing up in Alaska, our weapons were the mossberg, mini-14, and AR-15.
Plus our blackhawks. (44 mag or 357 mag)

For actual hunting I had my Winchester.300 mag.
But we ALWAYS had our ARs and minis in camp as well.
These days I don't have an AR, as I've actually always preferred my mini-14's, but there is no arguing the fact that the AR is probably the most practical all around gun ever made.

I have several rifles but the only one I actually use for hunting is my AR 15. It does nearly everything well except for the large game.

I'm all for rights to own a car. Hell, I think you should own as many cars or use as much gas that your wife will let you.
But what I don't understand is the need for something that travels over 65mph. Do we really need to drive faster than that?

Am I missing the point on the practicality of those cars besides taking it out to the track and racing it?

Yes, You need to understand that our founding fathers had just overthrown a tyrannical government. The whole reason for the second amendment has nothing to do with hunting or sporting purposes. It is there to keep our government in check. The second amendment states that it is necessary for the security of a free state.

Wow......The OP asked a question looking for opinions. He didn't say AR15's should be taken away from us. He just wondered why they were popular and what they are typically used for....At least that is how I interpreted his post.

Flaring up and condemning him isn't going to fix anything or protect the 2A. AR15's have not been used but a couple times in these horrible instances yet receive the most attention based on their appearance and the ignorance of anti gun advocates. Educating the public that doesn't understand guns in general is a positive way to help find solutions to the violence. Dividing the citizens is going the opposite direction.

Identifying unstable people and finding ways to deal with them are the primary goal. Gun violence is involved but too often made the focus to the real issue. We can't stop that from happening if sides violently oppose each other.

Just my opinion.....;)

I remember once around 1985 me and my buddies took some guys from Los Angeles fishing at Goose Creek north of wasilla AK.
After driving there it's a few mile hike down the creek to the fishing spots near the mouth at the Big Susitna river. We parked and got our gear together and were ready to head out when we noticed them all staring at us.
My buddy had his AR slung in front (he always carried it like that, finger on the gaurd), I had my mini slung on my shoulder, 2 x 30 mags in it, other buddy had the mossberg out front. We all had our blackhawks holstered in various calibers. Just another day on the creek for us, but they looked at us like we were headed out on a 3 man re-con.

I told them "there are a LOT of bears here".
Dude says "will that gun stop a bear?"

I said..."well, the first 30 rounds might piss him off, but the next 30 should drop him..."

(I never shot a bear with any .223 for the record, but I did shoot one with my mossberg once with .50 slugs in it.)

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... the libtards don't understand that yet. Let them keep focussing on one particular weapon. I'll keep firing all the others;)

I think it has a lot to do with how easy they are to build and modify... or should I say attach a lot of really cool looking shit along the rails. They are fun to fire, reliable if built right, and not to bad to maintain. Easy accurate for the novice shooter within reason, and ammo is available for a reasonable price.

They chamber the same rounds, and fire in the same manner. They are about the same length.

Go into a gun store and actually look at the functional
difference between an AR 15 and any other semi auto rifle. You will come away with the same view of ?assault weapon? regulations and you do of the TSA. It is all theater.

You are kind of missing the point of the second amendment. The point of the second amendment goes all the way back to the Declaration of Independence.. that whole part that describes when the government no longer serves the citizens but rather itself it's time to shrug off such government etc.. The only way to free yourself from tyranny is to be equipped to fight tyranny etc..

In short if the American populace wasn't armed (and armed well) we would live in a far less free society then we currently do.

Since the speed limit is 80mph max in the US, why do people need cars that go faster?

Words can be hurtful and triggering, why so we allow people the right to say mean things?

Is there something in the second amendment that states it's for hunting purposes? I must've missed that part.

What should legal guns look like?
Because they all operate the same.

If only we banned guns...surely we'd all be safer

Because as is typical with the lefts agenda if you allow them ban one then they feel they have the inroads and push to ban them all.......and if you let the left push their agenda then you would have no firearms at all...

Whoa! Calm your trigger finger shooter.

I'm looking for insight on why we need military grade weapons. No one talking about taking your gun bro.

Absolutely no good reason to race anything... Which is why I will now go to our legislature and try to get them to BAN RACING in all forms.

it's a great platform I think of them as the small block chevy of guns. So many combos and options. And a .223/5.56 is now t a high power round it's a medium power.

Think I'm gonna paint mine white being that it's black it gets no love.

What makes my .. oh, err... my friends AR15 a "military grade weapon". What other "military grade weapon" do you want to talk about?

What tools are we to resist a tyrannical government with?

I don't generally comment on these gun debates... the AR-15 is a fantastic platform that can be used for a wide variety of reasons. unfortunately it is has a horrible reputation. interesting fact guns don't kill people..... people kill people.

It's a RIFLE

It's the most popular style of rifle.

Magazines are readily available for it.

If you're going to buy a rifle this is what most people buy.
