I've gotten notices from SoCal Edison threatening to do it to me, but it hasn't happened yet. I'm in SoCal mountains. The good news is that Edison already replaced most of the wires up here with rubber coated, so really should be no reason to shut power off with that.

I do enjoy how this state is pushing for full electrification but can't even keep the power on when the wind blows. FFS!

I heard, do you have a generator (portable or house)?

I also heard a bunch of people complaining about how many generators are up here now and how it disturbs the peace. Which I would agree with to a point, but I'd try to put a sound deadening cover over it, and you can always leave the generator in “off” or turn it off manually if one doesn't want it running for some reason.

I drove up to Oxnard today...

Coming through Tujunga Canyon, the wind was pushing my big ol truck around pretty good!

Not even a breeze here in Channel Islands Harbor right now.

Here's some info to consider:

Electrical utilities get blamed and held financially liable for fires if the ignition point was anywhere near their wires. If some homeless POS starts a fire near a pole and that fire ends up getting out of control, guess who gets blamed for the fire after the homeless POS is long gone? The utility, because the fire started near their equipment.

Even if the utility has maintained everything impeccably and something fails or something else interferes with the equipment causing an ignition (think Mylar balloons), the utility gets blamed.

Utilities also have an obligation to provide service to customers in their territories where it is required. New housing tract in the hills with a bunch of fire-prone terrain and vegetation between the substation and where the tract is located? State says, "Too bad, utility. Get those people power. Oh, and by the way, your option to underground is not approved because it'll cost 10 times as much and the builder of the tract doesn't want to pay that. Where you would underground would also interfere with the hairless burrowing rock eating unicorn toad. We can't have that."

So in response to the state being stupid (again), utilities minimize their risk in weather conditions and areas that promote fire hazards. Can't blame them for starting the fire when the lines aren't energized.

The more you know....

There is a lot more to it than that, but that's a good simple description

Update, still out. No wind here either. Something about how they need day light so they can “inspect” before they re energize. We have a backup generator so we’re good.

once the power is out for more than an hr they need to patrol every inch for integrity before they can re energize.

Trust me, the guys dont want to dump it. It means a ton of work.

They can patrol at night.
