Going to Greece. Decent deal on Turkish air. Also, good reviews but I don't necessarily trust online reviews as they're padded. Also, the layover is in Istanbul and is only about an hour. I don't speak Turkish, we'll be in a bit of a hurry to make the connection even though it is another Turkish plane. Non English speaking country trying to make a connecting flight? Gives me a little anxiety.

Anyone have any Insite?

I have no input on Turkish air but, a one hour layover is cutting it close on that long of a flight. One hiccup on this side of the pond and your connector is missed.

Maybe search out their service. I tend to look at negative reviews and look to find how the resolution was handled when flying.

That’s the one thing I don’t cheap out on, flying.

You will be fine. English is spoken all over the place.

Turkish Air is better than average.

If you miss your layover and have some daylight to burn……… head for The Grand Bazaar. 6500 stores and shops. Very interesting stuff for sale. It’s humongous. Historical too. I think it’s 1500 years old or something like that.

I would fly TA, but have no idea how small or big Istanbul is. If it’s anything like Heathrow an hour is tough, especially if you have a slight delay.

Friend flew them last year to Greece, he said it was a good experience and was happy. He usually fly's Lufthansa every year but wanted to try it. English isn't a problem many speak and I agree the 1hour connector might be tight.

I plan on researching the actual airport online before I finalize ticket purchase and figure out which flight. Hopefully not too large and not too complex. o_O👍

The airline is good, but the people ... they are nice, but keep your chin up and elbows out. Aggressiveness in lineups and close quarters is not like it is here.
Istanbul airport is huge so hustle if your connection is tight.
On a side note; Istanbul is a GREAT place to visit. The history their is unbelievable. I highly recommend spending a few days there.

Talk to a friend of the day that flew took a share. He said it was better than expected. Pretty decent..

I seen some of their prices on long hauls in Europe and they’re exceptional compared to some of the other mainstream airlines, but always check Lufthansa and there’s subsidiary discovery airlines.
I’ve been to Truckee not Istanbul but more towards the south end I went to Mary’s house in a few other architectural locations. It’s pretty incredible history. I must say I would highly recommend just getting a private driver. You can often find them somewhere online rather than be crowded in like cattle Onto a tour bus it’s not that much more money and you get the real details of what you’re looking at and escorted tour.
I do that a lot of places we go we even did it in Dubai couple hundred dollars and the guy takes shot for four hours or five hours and shows you the whole city and the history of it. Very educational.

Are you going to Greece for a cruise? Virgin Voyages by chance? Athens, Greece?

And a lot of way out countries the only way to fly is business class. I’ve been to some parts of the world and you might wait two hours to board that place plus the issues as things that happen in 3rd world, but if your business class you’re done deal, no stress. Overseas pretty much that’s all we fly.

Turkish has a program for layovers in Istanbul. If you are there over a certain amount of time, they give a tour of the city and lunch or dinner.

No cruise. Flying into Athens 👍
My wife and I flew into Athens last year to go on a cruise. We thought Athens was a dump, rundown, and a lot like downtown Los Angeles. Apparently the city went bankrupt several years ago, and it shows.

With that said, we loved it there. It’s very crowded and cars double and triple park on the curb lines. Everyone leaves their keys in their cars so the next guy that comes along can move the other cars. The people were really nice, and the food was amazing. We went to the Parthenon and spent most of the day there, just pondering the history and what happened there a thousand years ago. We never felt unsafe walking around at night and one of the pizza restaurants stayed open for us so we could have dinner at midnight in their outside dining area.

Yeah. I heard Athens is dumpy. Wouldn’t be my first choice of a destination but we have some Business there that mandates we go to Athens. Buddy and his wife gonna fly over from Italy and hang a little and we plan on driving out of the city and checking out the surrounding areas at some point. Not exactly a vacation for us but draggin the kids along regardless.

You guys know Habibi sitting right seat only needs 300 hours to get hired outside of the USA.

I’d be more worried about the guy passing you on a 2 lane road going the other way that’s a .20 BAC or sleep deprived or on his phone or even the domestic pilot that’s a full blown alcoholic for that matter (know a few of those). Hell statistically speaking, the low hours right seat apparently doesn’t matter. As the USA leads with airline crashes. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Note: Pic/Post was not to disrespect Kobe, it was to highlight Turkish Airlines investment in revamping its image a decade ago. They have a new fleet of aircraft and service to Europe is top notch.
Absolutely no issues with language.
Istanbul airport leaves some US airports to be desired.
No issues flying Turkish Airlines.

Just got back Monday from 10days in Greece. Flew Delta, Airbus, wife wasn’t flying Boeing. No problems. She almost booked Lufthansa. Talked with some who flew Turkish Air and they loved it. Said 3 course meals and food was good.

A lot of history there. More graffiti in Athens then So Cal.

IMO one of the best airlines I've flown on.....

The airport in Istanbul is crazy good as well. Not the easiest to navigate, but the shopping/dining area, along with the lounge for BC/FC is insane. I'll admit I slept most of my 10 hours layover there as I hadn't slept in days. Just laid down on a couch in the lounge and took a giant power nap.

1 hour to switch planes there is going to be tough. You have have to go through a secondary security checkpoint just to sit down at your gate prior to boarding.

I flew Turkish Air Business to Greece last year, out of LAX with the short layover in Istanbul too. I was concerned but It actually worked out as the next plane to Athens was only like 2-3 gates over. Istanbul airport was the nicest I've ever been in and wish I had more time there during my layover on the way back lol. Security was a little weird, they inspected everyone's carry-ons and personal items again at the gate prior to boarding.

I flew Lufhtansa previously and I prefer Turkish now. Another thing I liked is that they were one of the few airlines that has a legit business class with lay flats for both legs.

We flew on Boeing planes both the newer and older, I forget the model numbers but the newer one was obviously nicer and more private but had tighter seats.

I've actually been keeping an eye on their prices to buy tickets for next summer.

Turkish Air is good, I used to fly them in and out of Kabul, always to their old airport though, their new airport is supposed to be huge and crazy nice. When I was flying them they had an actual chef on the plane, even in economy, they probably still do it.

Thanks for the info. Great stuff. I'm feeling good about booking with the feedback from everyone. Figured at least a couple people on here would have first hand experience. Thanks again!

Not sure I would take his flight advice.
Ouch!

Dude I work with was trail riding that day and was literally dodging parts from the helicopter as is hit the ground. Nearly struck him and his friend. He was the first there. Body parts and shit all over. Pretty gnarly listening to him tell the story. Kind'a fucked him up a little.

Maybe you can set them up with some sim time... 🤣🤣🤣

It wasn't that long ago that US carriers hired 400 hour wonder kids to warm the right seat. Besides plenty of senior crews have flown perfectly good airplanes into the ground. I'd be more concerned with an international airlines safety culture and accident history. For instance, I'm not going to fly an Asian domestic discount carrier anytime soon. But a well established flagship carrier? Sure.

Take some Challenge Coins with you. My K9 buddy brought some and they were a big hit with the Athens PD K9 officers that were walking around the streets. He got some great pics with them and their dogs.

You might want to consider checking out some other areas or islands. There's some nice resorts around Athens but 2-3 days is more then enough time to see the Acropolis and checkout the area. IMO

The Greek ferry’s are awesome. You could do a multi island vacation just using the ferry’s. Some are faster than others. There are a ton of YouTube videos on how to utilize the ferry’s.

I think the most concerning thing I’m seeing with this next generation of pilots is that they are detached from the mechanical side of life, having been raised on screens they have almost zero mechanical aptitude or grasp of physical things moving, binding, slipping, etc…. Some of these kids studying over here and then going back and becoming employed can’t even drive a car.

I’d prefer to have an 8000 hour retired military guy as PIC or coming on as an FO vs. 300 hour Habibi kid with 1000’s of hours playing video games on his phone as life experience 😂

Reality is all these guys are fine when everything’s going well, but when shit goes sideways I want a hitter making calls🤷‍♂️ I do have some confidence in the FAA standards in place in our country for both flight crews and maintenance operations. I don’t know that this standard exists consistently on an international level?
