It has been many years but I have done that road trip twice. I would plan your trip so you dont do any driving during darkness. The highway is narrow enough in many places, then you add in the big trucks, unseen road hazards and various animals and it can get dangerous real fast. We would leave OC real early AM so we would cross the border while it was still dark. Driving to Ensenada in the dark is fine as you are on a good highway. Plan on driving to either Santa Rosalia (570 miles-11 hours) or Loreto (693 miles-14 hours.) From Loreto to Los Cabos its about another 6 hours. Slow and steady is the mantra. Carry Pesos in smaller denominations to pay for your fuel. In many of the larger towns, like Cabo, some of the PEMEX stations will play games with your credit card. Dont carry anything illegal as you will pass thru a few roadside checkpoints run by their military. The guy in charge will be like 20 years old.

Been there, done that. Last time was in '07. Funny cause the military always wanted to see what was under my snugtop. Mexican fuel rocks!!!!

I have been going to Baja since 2005, I've never had an issue. The last Baja 1000 to La Paz was my 1st time going all the way down, it was an experience that I will never forget and one I can't wait to do again! I feel that you can have something happen to you anywhere in the world, if your going down there looking for trouble you will find it but if you do what's right and your not a tool you should be just fine! We left Ensenada on a Thursday at 0800 and I arrived in Cabo at 0400 on Saturday only stopping to pit the cars. Everyone is right about the roads getting narrow, we actually hit mirror to mirror at one point. Driving at night is not that bad to me but then again I've never had an issue. I have posted some pictures of trips, if you go take it all in and enjoy! Also take a satalite phone with you, that's a huge plus!

If you're with AAA they have a good Baja guidebook and Mezzican insurance.
Never drive at night and best to fuel up during the day.
American Express used to be the way to roll down there but that may have changed.

If fuel stations are closed, power outages or WTF there are usually kids milling around the station with fuel in containers they'll sell to you.
I sent RD a fuel/water separator / filter funnel like we use and when we buy from the kids we run the fuel through the filter separator.
Friends got swindled outta of jet fuel for their helicopter so they filled it with Pee-Mix diesel strained through the funnel filter and their was plenty of water and crap in it.

It's a great journey.
Have Mezzican money, no guns, ammo nor knives.

Report back with a video.

I would kick all the older guys off my hood at the gas stations and just pay the little kids for "cleaning" the windshield.
And of course pay the little girls some change for the gum they were selling.

Looks like a great time-this is on my bucket list to do one day in my off road car!

My MIL and SIL have two houses down in Todos Santos (about a hour north of Cabo) and have made the drive from Taos NM down about 4 times. Never an issue. As said though, they do not drive at night and take their time, plan ahead and prepare....They had a flat, had the jack and all but the lug wrench was missing. DOH! made for a long delay.
