So I’m ordering rock for my house finally. It’s about 260 sheets. 9500 sq’ of rock. Trying to get the taping and topping mud stocked at the same time. How much will I need of each? Thanks in advance. Oh ya it’s square corners and level 4.

I got some professionals hanging it. Actually the’re commercial guys so that makes me nervous. When I have to remind them,uh we lay sheets down. Nothing against commercial guys, I do commercial work but I feel like most residential guys do cleaner work. The taper that might be doing it said 8 of taping and 35 of topping mud 3.5 gal boxes. That just seems excessive.

Commercial or shack rockers all the same if they use a board knife and a Stanley. Tape cut they should be fine piece work or contract. Same crew taping

How many boxes of taping and how many are topping mud?

That's a tough question not knowing what type of mud to be used, corner bead type (tape on, metal, plastic, how many sticks of bead, arches?, who hangs it etc.

Back in the day, 3 boxes of mud and one roll of tape for 1k sq. was the norm but things have changed.

Many have switched to taping and topping mud for all applications with excellent results. Hamilton/Westpac TNT is a good mud with no down side that I have seen.

If you are going to use all-purpose for taping, and topping mud for top coat I would ask your material supplier as he'll know what material is shipped and about how much mud of each type is needed.

A couple of friends that have been in the business for decades have subscribed to the one mud therory. They both do high-end homes all level 5, 10k sq. ft. and up, one Newport the other Palm Springs area.

Check with your tapers as to what type of mud they prefer as tapers are little bitches that do nothing but complain. :D

Ps; if you order too much mud, it tends to grow legs. o_O

Is anyone checking the framed walls for out of alignment studs? I know the hangers don't like to take the time. They like to show up and rock and roll.

Take a long straightedge and run it across the studs and ceiling joists. Look for studs and joists that are bowed in or out. Shave and shim accordingly.

Don't expect anyone else to do it.

So true not many people check the straightens of the lumber and shim before the drywall goes up. It makes a big difference. I know that my contractor would ream me if the lumber that I picked up was not straight. He knew what he was doing. When it came time to hang the doors and kitchen cabinets everything was plumb so shimming was not needed.

This, it really depends on who hung the drywall. I know when I hang the rock. It's about a box to every 8-10 sheets, when others do it can be 8 boxes too the sheet

House sat for awhile so we planed and fir strips on the walls and checked with a straight edge. Square corners. No arches. 8’ ceiling. West pack blue and green dot mud.

We joke that during the whole construction process the current crew always assumes the next guys will fix it.

Forms a bit off?
The finishers will fix it.
Concrete a bit off?
The framers will make up for it.
Framing a bit crooked?
The drywall guys will make it look good.
The hangers left the walls a bit off?
The tapers will take care of it.
Finish not right?
The painters will take care of it.
Paint not great?
The trim and moulding installers will cover it up.

1/3 taping mud to 2/3 topping.
Tape and first coat corner bead with the blue, everything else green dot.

Dont run out of taping mud as you dont want the using green dot for first coat on metal.
This if you are using metal corner bead and paper tape.

I assume you are getting 4x12 board.

And I have no idea how people use their phones to get on the forums what a pain in the ass

I'm not a fan of any of the lightweight muds materials to soft you sneeze on it and scratches just for using a sander your fingernails might hit the material and scratch it I like red. Green. But whatever works for everybody that's good with me

I always feel bad for the painters they're at the end of the job money has ran out and they're supposed to fix everything.

Friend of mine's drywalling a house in Palm Springs 2500 sheets of drywall wonder how much mud he's going to use.

When I was 19-20 years old, I worked as a drywall finish foreman on a 45 unit condo project in Vail.

I remember being in a unit staring at the fucking mess on the walls and the drywall guy said "your finishers can fix it".

I told him Jesus Christ hadn't been seen on Earth for two thousand years, and I didn't think he was going to show just to fix his shitty hanging job. We almost came to blows.

It used to drive me fucking nuts watching guys drop full sheets onto rock dollys and crush the tapered edge or pick them upright by putting the full weight of the sheet on one corner and pivoting it vertical.

They didn't give a shit, they were paid by the square foot.

On the big skim coat jobs are they spraying on the last coat or troweling it? I subbed out 2 houses and two guys knocked out both houses in a day with the big graco for final coat. Came out so smooth the taper that did first coat barely had to sand. Fastest finishing I have ever seen.

I'm not sure what the most common application techniques are at this point in time.

My friend in Palm Springs built his own sprayer using a spray force rig with a 500 gallon hopper. He's spraying about 3.5 to 4.0 gallons a minute. As a comparison, a Graco texspray Mk V will spray a little over one-gallon per. minute and about the same for a Speeflo Honda powered unit.

Trowling or rolling the mud on is still a viable technique. Job size and experience will dictate the method of application.

We used to do Individual Customs before the downturn,
1 box Red dot per thousand ft for tape add for metal depending on how much bead, so on 10k ft of board 10-15 boxes +/-
Black or Green Dot Topping 1 box per thousand ft (x2) for 2 Coats and a few for cross off and touch up so 20-25 a Topping would be a starting point , at least that’s how we did it

This sounds like a typical Yellowboat outcome.

I’m an instructor now so I’ve been out of the field a little while. At the training center I’ve seen a few applications. Mostly see it rolled on. There’s this tuff hide stuff a vendor brought in and demoed I’ll see if I can find the video. Sprayed on and scratch resistant. He used some big word by it’s supposed to help with painting. I’ll try and remember the word
