Currently have a 100A Zinsco panel (that appears to be in decent shape...no corrosion on the buss bars) but I lost a leg on 50A double pole breaker the other day that feeds a subpanel in my garage. Tough finding a correct replacement breaker, so I've got a 1/2 size 40A stuck in there now and I'm simply watching my loads until this gets resolved. It's a piece of shit panel anyway so I might as well just upgrade it.

I'd like a 200A new main panel installed....I can handle upgrading the sub later, if at all. Figured I'd try and find someone on here to do it before I start looking for random contractors

That 50A should be easy to source wheter on Amazon or Home Depot. It will be conneticut electric, chinese crap but thats who makes zinsco breakers now. The main panel upgrade can be a challenge unless you are overhead feed which you probably are in long beach. Other issue is that most zinsco panels have the meter dead center on the top which means thats where the pipe drops down, your replacement panel wont line up as its hub will be on the left of the panel requiring the new pipe to be relocated a few inches to the left as well as increasing its diameter.

Your cost to upgrade is going to vary widely based upon whether or not the guy you find is licenced and if he pulls a permit. Be very cautious of the midnite electric panel changes, sometimes that savings can cost you big money. We have a builder here who does a lot of remodels in your region, he probably has a line on a decent guy, sorry name is slipping me right now.

I can do it if you’d like. I’m back logged like a month though.

I’ll be upfront that it’s roughly 4k to do. If you can get a licensed guy under that before then I’d say go for it.

Don't want to take away from someone in here, but brother-in-law is in Lakewood and can probably get you in reasonably quick. Many years experience, just recently branched out on his own.

The issues, as I understand them, stem from corrosion on the bus bars and contacts...which I've seen in others, but mine looks like new. Other issues is you can't get good breakers for 'em. Half the houses in Long Beach (and my Dad's 2 houses, and his condo in Mammoth) have Zinsco panels....none have burned down and this is the only breaker failure I've had.

Square D on the other hand can kiss my ass. I'm probably changing one a month because the breaker decides to trip at 1/3 its rated amperage.

Regardless, I want more woopah so I can take off the kid gloves and run a big boy compressor in the shop....5hp ain't enough.
