Changing thier own oil?

I generally hate working on cars, but for some reason I enjoy changing my own oil. On the plus side is I know my plug is not over tightened, it's filled too the correct level and my oil filter is not on so tight it takes channel locks to get off.

Used to do it but not as much fun these days so I dont. Last month was the first time EVER that I took my truck to the car wash. I will be doing that again from now on. 15 minutes sitting and watching the sudds and the blower. It was much better than washing and drying for an hour only to be sweating at the end. LOL

Even thinking about getting the monthly pass front he place.

I use to always do it myself but with the price of oil these days it’s cheaper to have somebody else do it with a coupon  Especially on my F350 diesel that takes 15 quarts

I do my f350 diesel myself because of how much it costs, last time I asked the dealer I think it was $120 or something. I buy the motor craft oil and filter from autozone for $75ish. Where do you take yours and what does it run it you dont mind me asking?

What blows my mind is that they only say it takes an hour... um no, mine is still dribbling an hour after I pull the drain plug

Varies where I take it depending which online coupon I can find. But even without a coupon Walmart does it for $72 ish if I remember correctly

I used to till I learned that the car wash up the street does an oil change and car wash for $40. Can’t beat that. Have taken all my cars there for the past 5 years with no problems. Grand Car Wash in Covina.

It makes no difference at all if you let it drip for an hour or put the plug back in after a minute when 95% of the old stuff has drained out. Absolutely zero.

Maybe not, but the quart or so you pull from sucking out the high pressure oil pump on 7.3 does. Very few shops pull that plug and suck it out.

I do it on all the vehicles, it’s easy with a rack and telescoping drain reservoir. No matter how careful I am, the truck (diesel) manages to spray little bits of black soot soaked oil all over everything. It always makes a mess.

Seems like you can always find a deal on the cars, but motorhomes are another story. I have a hard time paying almost double, especially when it’s an easy vehicle to do. So........I usually do all the cars, motorhome, and generator all in the same afternoon.

I’m the same as you, I let mine drip for quite a while....is it necessary? No, I just view it as an excuse to have “one more” cocktail while doing mans work! :D

I do all my own maintenance. When changing oil I'm taking a flashlight and looking around the heads, valve covers, hoses, radiator, exhaust, etc for anything else that might be in need. Not to mention wiping everything with a rag coaked in purple power cleaner. You think jiffy lube is looking at anything other than the next car coming in? Nope.

Reminds me of the older brother of a friend in high school. He'd drive up to his parent's house in Hesperia from Riverside. Get the drain plug pulled by mid morning, then go inside and visit his parents. He wouldn't finish the job until late afternoon. This was on a Saturn. I thought he was nuts then and now. Totally unnecessary drain time, but whatever floats a person's boat. As long as I'm not the one sitting around waiting for dribbles to stop, doesn't bother me.

I do all maintenance and most repairs on our cars, boat, etc. I wash and wax the cars as well. Newer vehicle oil change is easy. Older cars, you'd have to grease a bunch of zerk fittings every 3,000 miles. Now, everything is sealed, no zerks. Drain/fill, and get to the beer quicker.

I only work on my boat.
Car washing and oil changing are a thing of the past for me.
Once I’m in a place with a shop again I’ll probably get back to doing my own.

See today, I pulled the plug, went inside made lunch, sent off 2 invoices then fold the filter and reinstall the plug. I I agree I would not intentionally sit around doing nothing waiting for it to drain.

My 2500s are a piece of cake compared to the diesel 3500s. I stock up when on sale. AutoZone had $15 off if you buy the Mobil one synthetic and filter. Costco had $10 instant rebate on Delco recently. Good for next 4 oil changes.

So 20 out of 17,000 RDP members change their own oil? I would have guessed 10! lol How many of you go out in your driveway and wash these same vehicles?

I hate the skid plate. I just threw it away on my Tundra. Having to remove it to get to the filter is stupid. Just did my wife’s cvt fluid. Like 20 different plastic pins on a plastic skid plate. So dumb....

When oil changes started to cost me over $100 with full synthetic I decided to go back to doing it myself. With Walmart or Amazon my OTD price for oil and filter for my Tahoe is about $30 using Mobil1 5/30. I save between 70-80 bucks. That's kind of a lot of money for something I can easily do myself on a day off. It's crazy how much money you can save by working on your own car or truck. I Just installed new drilled/slotted zinc coated brake rotors, new brake pads and front wheel bearings for just over $300, I figured I saved at least $1000 on that job. Can you tell I hate car payments? lol I'm gonna keep this thing on the road until it dies.

I change my f350 and my Manx oil/filters. These two I can easily get under.
All the cars just go to shop, simpler that way.

Sam's Club sells Delo for ten bucks a gallon. I buy the oil filters on line in bulk.

Just did mine. I hate doing it! :D

I do all my own oil changes, trans services, belts, hoses, coolant, waterpumps, timing belts, clutches, brakes, I overhaul my own engines and some transmissions (non electronic) I even rebuilt my upper on my bravo 1 when I blew it up, I have nearly 100 hours on it since the rebuild.

I just pay someone since it's cheap enough. Plus I only do about every 7500 - 10,000 miles since it's a scam the oil industry pulled on us masses.

Consumer Report did a study of NY taxis years ago & tested all different types of oil at different intervals & the results was no matter what the oil, there was not hardly a noticeable breakdown especially for the recommended every 3000 miles (that was ridiculous to ever change at those intervals).

Then I know someone who replaced his oil in his boat after every trip. LMAO. He probably hardly ever hit 4000 rpms.

I change mine too, but I just pour about a 1/2 quart in after most of it drains out to get the last bit at the bottom. Walmart is super cheap for Mobil 1 for my shitty Prius and Synthetic Rotela for the Cummins. I'm picky about filters though so I order them by the 6 count. KN, Donaldson or something on the proven side pending on the application.

Now my wife's BMW, forget it! No dipstick, can't see a thing under the hood or under the car. That's the best $100 I spend.

I even picked up some ramps at a garage sale so I don't have to jack them up. I enjoy it and it allows me to clear my head and think about work.

Did the publish how contaminated the oil was? 10K miles on oil is going to be dirty.

Allow me to explain the scam to you...

Technically speaking, oil never breaks down, what happens is it becomes contaminated with the by products of the internal combustion in your engine. Raw fuel, blow by all mix in with the oil, dilute it and make it a whole lot less effective.

Plus, the the same products attack your rubber seals and ruin them. This contributes to oil leaks. Its arguably the number one cause.

Changing your oil frequently keeps not only your engine well lubed, but your seals as well, and makes them last a lot longer.

BMW calculates fuel use, and advises you to change your oil accordingly. No two cars (drivers) will have the same oil change intervals.

If your friend had a high Performance engine, that sucked down a Lot of fuel, he was smart to change it frequently to avoid fuel contamination.

New cars have longer oil change intervals cause there basicly is no unburned fuel left over after combustion, and they hardly use any fuel anyway.

Hope this helps. :)

Sounds weird, but I actually love auto/marine/utv maintenance and detailing. No one eles touches my shit until its beyond my skill and tool set.

Even then im picky AF and the shop either offers me a job (has happened a few times) or fuckin hates me.

I always maintain our vehicles including brakes and large repairs. I did buy a new GMC Denali 2500HD last year and got my 2 free oil changes at the dealer. First what a major pain in the ass, big waste of time just for an oil change to take it to the dealer . On the second oil and filter change had them do the fuel filter as I have not changed it and it was due. They charged me almost $200. I was shocked so I looked at pricing at Summit and it is just a screw on type filter that they charged me $40 too much. No more taking it somewhere for me. Only go to the touchless car wash and drive home for short detail.

I used to my own oil changes all the time. Now I buy the 5 quart jugs from Walmart, OEM or Wix filter to take to my friends shop. He charges me $10 to change the oil.

I caught the dealer just putting in enough def to get light off. Free oil changes and def fill first 2 years. Last time the porter smacked my truck into the trash can right in front of me when I told him to stop he did not have room to make the turn. Dealership refused to review video and sent me on my way.

I still have free oil change available but not worth it. By the time I drive 15 minutes to dealer I can do it myself. I was doubtful they even changed it after catching the service writer, service manager and service tech lying to my face about topping off def.

I do all my own maintenance. it takes about 30 minutes to change oil, transmission's can be a little, brakes are easy, fuel filters pretty easy.

I do hate the design of the oil filter setup on my wifes's Toyota, bad design in my opinion.

the difficult thing for me is getting rid of oil. Last year we moved and now they won't take oil in anything larger than a gallon jug. The town I lived in for 20+ years would take five gallon cans seven days a week. Now I have to transfer the five gallon jugs to one gallon. They don't care if I empty twenty gallons into the holding tank as long as I do it one gallon at a time. Come On Man
