Couple hours ago. UPDATE: at hospital with him. they are keeping him sedated on ventilator while they control his blood pressure. he's got 7 IV set ups, and other various drains. I want to shout out to these cardiac ICU nurses!!! They never stop watching, adjusting, monitoring. They are truly God's angels 😇

He will be off ventilator tonight. The last 90 minutes i was there, they began the process of weaning him off sedation and lowering the ventilator settings. What...A....Process -- actually amazing to learn and see. Unfortunately, visiting hours were over before I could see him without the vent. It's fine because at this point I was unable to hold tears any longer so I was fine leaving. Tomorrow is another day. They get him out of bed and into a chair. It's amazing to imagine since tonight I saw more IV lines then I've ever seen on a person not to mention tubes, wires, hoses....
Great news!!! You got this RR!!!!

You're in our prayers RR, you got this. My wife went through open heart surgery five years ago, to replace a valve, take your time recovering.

I'm going to hospital later this morning. I just talked to Rich. He seems to be in good spirits, considering. But everyone who knows him and all he's been through in the past, knows full well he trys to keep good vibes.
He said they removed ventilator fully at about 9:15 last night. He says he is sitting in a chair and will walk short distances today. His chest hurts from where they cut the breastbone. He says morphine not working for pain so he's on Tylenol. He sounded good other than being short of breath from trying to talk.

More updates.

They stepped him down to cardiac unit out of ICU....a day early!!! Interesting that cardiac nurses have to travel with the bypass patients even within the hospital

Get well soon!
I cannot believe going through that type of surgery and only on Tylenol?? That sounds insane. I would want morphine, dilauded and Percocet all in one IV!!!

My father had a triple bypass about 18 months ago

They had him on fentanyl. When he came to and i was in the room he whimpered "fuuuuuccckkk, fuuuuuuccckkk, fuuuuccckkkk, fuuuuucccckk, It hurts"

Ruthless pain. Thinking of you RR, hoping for a speedy recovery

Sending my prayers and energy to Ritchey. Having one's sternum cracked and rib spreaders racking the chest open has to cause pain that's nearly unmanageable.

This looks a medieval torture instrument.

Surprisingly the pain is not so bad. The worst thing is the breathing therapy blowing into that contraption.

Make sure you take a d3 /k2 supplement. The k2 helps the body direct calcium to the bones and joints and keeps it out ofthe soft tissue. Its a fat soluable vitamin so enjoy it with a good ribeye, seriously.

While in the hospital walk as much as you can.

I'm just one, of a whole bunch of inmates, who've likely never met RR. But, each of us are pulling for you. You're one of the corner stones of this place. Keep doing what you're doing. Sounds like you're headed in the right direction. Keep it up. Huge thanks to Jefftowz for the updates.

I'm sure the totally Uncertified, Unqualified, but very Opinionated, RDP Medical Review Board will soon begin weighing in. Consider it 'recreational reading material'. Then continue to follow the advice of your excellent doctors.

I hate those damned spirometers and Nurse Ratchet standing there demanding "Push! Push! Exhale!

I hope Ritchey is being brought around about now and isn't hurting too bad. Get better, RR!

update

UPDATE: I spent the last 9 hours with Rich. He is doing everything asked of him. He was out of bed and in a chair most of the day. We finally got approval to get Norco on board <morphine was pointless> and it helped tremendously. He was shallow breathing until he got the pain meds that worked. He was using his breathing exercises on and off. I finally talked him unto trying to rest before I left. He is excited for tomorrow as the plan is to take out the chest tubes and pacemaker lead wires and then he can walk more than from bed to chair. He wants to go home by Thanksgiving. I'm trying to advise that it's not wise to push that hard as getting up and down totally wipes him out. The assumed go home date is between the 24 and 26th.
We shall see how it goes. I'm extremely proud of him. This was a true shock and "gut punch" and he's a trooper in it all.

Waiting to consult with the Cardiac Rehab team for after he goes home. It's basically physical therapy for cardiac surgery cases.

Continued prayers!

Wow what a journey. As much as I am sending good thoughts and prayers to RR, I'm also sending them to Jeff, the wife and to all of the other support people around RR right now. As a person thats been under the knife quite a bit, I've seen the toll on the loved ones that these times can take. Happy thoughts for everyone....

I watched my Dad go through this back in 1997. Even with all the modern procedures related to the bypass process 25 years later the recovery is difficult and cannot be pushed.

They may look like someone with a row of staples down their chest but inside they are beat up pretty good.

Hang in there RR.

Just received another update from Mrs RR.

Went to see him after work for a short visit. Still haven't removed drains. In good spirits. Coughing alot with gurgle so on antibiotics and Lasix for probable low grade pneumonia. No fever which is a good thing. Still shallow breathing which is normal right now so on higher flow oxygen.
He's trying to avoid lots of pain meds...taking them minimally.
Was visited by the Cardiac Rehab group to discuss the program they offer beginning 6 weeks post op.

Thank you for asking.

When I had mine done the drains actually caused most of my pain. When they took one of them out the pain went away. I think it was pushing against something inside. So hope to get the drains out soon.
