My neighbor Pat has a 2006 SLK 350 and it has a sending error code that has something to do with the Transmission. Indicating speed sensor, throttle body and conductor plate in transmission.. He's looked some shit online and apparently it's a real common problem with these things? Two problems that he has is there's no Mercedes dealership around here, and the second problem he has is looking it up online apparently it's like 2,000-5,000 to fix?

From what we read it's just some computer download that apparently only a Mercedes tech can do? Anyone know anything about this or have a solution that doesn't cost quite that much?

How many miles on it RD?

Speed sensor codes with a conductor plate issue and throttle body codes usually mean a bad conductor plate in the transmission.

Not a huge job, but something you probably should take to the dealer unless the shop you take it too has the J-2534 Pass Through Tool and the subscription to the Mercedes Software.

It will need to be coded because the transmission control unit is matched to the engine ECU, has to be rematched after conductor plate replacement.

If you post up the specific codes I can try to give you a better opinion, are these generic OBDII codes from a wallmart code reader or a Mercedes Tool?

*Edit, the shop will have to be Certified by Mercedes to do the coding since it has to do with security.

Theft Relevant Protection:

TRP items that may only be available from dealerships and shops that are registered Vehicle Security Professionals include electronic vehicle keys, transponder keys, ignition locks, infrared control units, selector level modules, steering locks, gear control units, airbag and SRS cables, body shells, body panels, body components, and engine control modules.

it's a napa tool error code po717.

What's the most cost effective way to fix this?

My brother is a Mercedes tech here in San Diego. I showed him this and he said SBMech nailed it. He said

Needs a conductor plate unless it's a vgs 1 transmission then it'll need a complete valve body. Both are trp parts that need to be ordered thru the dealer

That is a generic code to indicate that there are fault codes in the transmission.

At 150k I would not be surprised to see slippage codes, if that is the case he will be looking at transmission replacement, but you should get a tool that can actually read the codes first.

Before any assumptions.

This is great information and much appreciated. The transmission shifts perfectly and isn't shooting any other code, other than the P0717 code. Looks like time to "bring out another thousand" or so.

IMO you should just drive it to the closest dealer to avoid headaches.

Even Mercedes Certified shops can sometimes have issues with the TRP repairs, don't ask me how I know :p

If you need more advice just post up.

Thank you! The closest dealer is in Henderson NV so I will need to trailer it up there. Nothing is ever easy. Thanks again.

AAA may do something with that since there is nowhere in town to repair it....maybe something to consider.

In between here and there, you might also see what everybody else is doing on www.mbworld.org, or www.benzworld.org . They are forums just like here on RDP --you need to find the correct section for your model car.

When I had my e320, I used the info I learned from those forums multiple times and saved thousands.

The only time I caved in was after the harmonic balancer fell apart. Then, the dealer claimed it was a maintenance item. Nice try, it was under a bulletin and after a week or so they repaired it for free; and then some months later they recalled the part as more of them came apart.

Chris at Prestige used to be a Mercedes tech and used to do Mercedes repair when he first got to Havasu. You might want to ask him if he has a local resource for the repair.

Probably been said already. But it needs a conductor plate
