I just finished rebuilding this Holley 800 carburetor, but it was warm enough I didn't photograph the steps involved. This one took longer than usual because I had to strip the old yellow paint off of it before I would put it in my carburetor cleaner.

Is there enough interest in this for me to shoot the photos and do the write up?

Damn, you are a couple of years late. Really could’ve used the expertise when I owned my Sonic but I’ve moved on to an OB Checkmate. Still many of us like to keep learning if you are willing to keep sharing. In other words, yes on doing a rebuild thread.

It would be awesome for people to know how to actually adjust one properly!

I've seen Countless Holly's come to me with slop in the accel pumps and the throttle plates a Mile out of adjustment.

EVERYTHING has to be Perfect for a carb to work as designed.

There is a ton of theory around Picking proper jets, power valves, pump cams and squirters, but, after those selections are made, knowing How to adjust them is paramount.

And in what order the adjustments need to be done!!!

Pump cam chart. And most cams have two positions they can be installed in.

Yes please. I just had my quick fuel 850 gone through by a carb guy in Ontario now hot idle is great but cold start sucks.

You'd have to drop it off to get that resolved.

And with how "cold" it is lately, that might be a tough ask! 😜

You sir, have a wealth of knowledge!!
I dont there's anyone, including myself, who wouldn't want the writeups and teachings that you suggest to offer.
Any education is always good, and coming from a source as yourself, makes it even better.
Just my 2 cents

Yes please!!!

Then do quadra-jets👍😂
Right? A Holley carb is as simple as they come. Its knowing what parts to select and placed is when the experienced guy @obnoxious001 steps in.

Then add a Blower or a centrifugal super charger and hope you got it right. The 80's were fun times. Turbo's? yep those too.

They are simple, except for the people that are not real mechanical and are afraid to try. That's basically why I offered to show. No special tools required except some sort of carb dip.

I don't think a Holley main body fit's in the 1 gallon cans that are cheaper to find and purchase. I bought a 5 gallon size when I first moved to Parker 9 years ago, but it's mild compared to the stuff my dad used to have, I end up letting the parts soak overnight.

I have offered to teach some locals how to build an engine, but seems like people that I offer the opportunity to are not serious and make excuses not to show up.

If I lived closer as well, I would take you up on the opportunity as well if were available.

Ever thought about a YouTube or other media platform to teach the entire world?
With enough viewers you could double monetize one engine build.

The amount of math and checking of various clearance, end play, is staggering to someone novice to it.
Watching someone do it and explain the how and why of it all, possible options of solving things that sometimes don’t measure up, etc is like gold to those who really want to know and do.

Oh!
And after Holley and the quadra-jet rebuild threads....Thermoquad😎😂
As soon as I take a lesson on those! I am not well versed on them, probably count on one hand how many I have built in my lifetime.

There are tons of guys doing engine builds and tech already. Some are good, some are wrong. For example, an older guy was explaining oil flow backwards on a small block Chevy. To do a video correctly, in my opinion, would require bringing in a camera man. Also, developing enough of a following would take some time. I follow some channels that I am sure make some pretty good money, based on how I have seen their racing teams grow, including newer and better race cars and haulers. I am sort of at a point where I want to wind down my responsibilities to others and spend more time skiing while I am still able.

I generally figure on 30 hours to measure and assemble an engine, including grinding, washing and painting the block, installing cam bearings, all necessary measuring and bearing fitting, etc etc. I am sure many take longer due to things like having to sand thrust bearings. I have a stock of over and under sized bearings so I don't have to special order them to get the clearance I know will work.

I've rebuilt my share of carbs but it would be nice to see a pro do it.

I will probably keep it very simple, for beginners, just pointing out how I lay out the parts when I disassembe, checking to make sure parts in the kit fit properly, etc. Also basic settings so it should run with minor adjustments on the engine after it starts up. Should be fun, believe I have a jet boat carb due in this week.

Thanks Barry. If possible can you go over power valve selection and also boost referencing pros and cons? I had the carbs on my blower motor boost referenced and they seemed to make it idle and run worse than previously. I took the lines off an blocked them. Maybe this request can be a separate thread?

Tuning, would definitely be part 2.

You could still film it Barry and post it to YouTube and make the video private.

Then just place the link in here. You can even turn the comments off.

You would definitely be providing a useful education on something that is rapidly going away.

We use to buy Berryman carb cleaner at Price Club for like twenty five dollars for a five gallon pail! Auto Parts Club had Berrymans for about the same price! For you youngsters Price Club became Costco and Auto Parts Club went out of business!

Super interesting video to me seeing how they richen and lean individual cylinders with a single carb.

I’m the same way Barry. Holley’s I’ve got down to a science for rebuild and tuning, Carter/Edelbrock I’m pretty good with but every time I touch a Quadrajet I end up wishing I hadn’t.

Q jet and edelbrock function is damn near identical

Yep, would have liked more information, but not going to do quite as much of that with a standard Holley.

Yes I understand that . Both use metering rods and jets, both use secondary demand type valve, in terms of function and tuning very similar.
Well I guess we both agree that they are alike in the sense that they are both carburetors 😁.
There is a reason that most peoples first upgrade to there older Chevy is to replace the Q-Jet with a Holley or Edelbrock. Q-jets are very finicky when you start changing things, they are not real dependable, they have almost no aftermarket support and in my experience every time I rebuilt one there was always some mystery problem that took way to long to sort out.

Great video. It's kinna funny, I'd just heard about Willy's carburetors about a month ago w/ it's quick change adjustability etc. Now this video pops up explaining it all. Very nice...
I wonder what they could do for me in regards to engine longevity w/my very rules limited 600 cfm on my SE engines? I guess maybe I should stop dunking them seasonally for starters and go from there? Haha
Cool vid. Thx for sharing.

I stayed out of the shop the hot months this year. The carburetor I was expecting to come in still has not showed up, so I've been just working on engines recently.
