my 2000 7.3 has had its first hiccup after 90k+ miles. So far it hasn't left me stranded but I'm jittery about using it anywhere long distance.
It's an odd problem where it simply doesn't react to any throttle I give it. What I've noticed is its when I come off a resting throttle, ie: from off idle or a downhill coast. First time I felt it I was coasting in gear going 60-65 downhill with no throttle, when I pressed on pedal it didn't react until I pressed it a few times then it just jumped and went back to normal again. Next time was from a stop sign, I pressed throttle and it jerked on/off for a few seconds then back to normal again. Most recent it was from a stop again but like episode one it just didn't act like I gave it any throttle, popped it into neutral pumped the pedal a couple times and back to normal again.:headscratch:
To me it feels like perhaps a throttle switch is not giving EFI a signal to add fuel to the engine. :hmm

Check Engine light has been on for years but its code indicates a glow plug issue. I have had the harness under intake replaced once for some other fairly common problem(I'm told) a while back too.

Anyone have a educated theory and/or can suggest a reputable tech somewhere in No San Diego county I can take it to? thanks

Sounds like a Throttle Position Sensor, get it checked for codes. SES i think is the code. They are easy to change about 20 minutes.

Don't remember Name but I took my 1997 PSD to a Heavy Equipment International Shop in Oceanside right off of Oceanside blvd.

I stopped taking my truck to Ford dealers and started using international shops gotten much better service and turnaround. and the 3 shops i have used had a better shop rate.

I agree with possible TPS or CPS (if you never did the recall on this one for sure) I keep a spare in my glovebox and have the Replcement sinsor from ford installed.

Agreed, popular problem with the 7.3. Only other issue I ever had was the wiring harness failure on the injectors, but I doubt that's it.

If you're under the hood, replace the harness while you're at it. The old ones are famous for either breaking or the wires melting.
You can get the replacements at an IH dealer and I think there's one in Bell.

The injector harness I replaced once already but I'd guess its probably brittle by now again.

I had the same problem on my 2000, it was the accelerator pedal position sensor.

As previosuly mentioned, it's the throttle position sensor for sure. Mine went out at 50K.

It's a wierd feeling when your at a red light, once light turns green your stuck with an idling truck. Get it fixed, don't rely on it continuing to eventially work, because the day will come that it won't.

Do they have Autozones in Cali? Here in Utah they will pull code for you for free.
Been in the auto repair business for 20 years and I would advice you not to chase parts. If you know someone with an Edge programer you can pull code with that and google it. I had the exact same symptoms on my truck and also thought it was the TPS, it wasn't .

I guess I need to have my buddy order one of these for me, my 97 has almost 94k on it and I have never changed it.
Ziggy, it sounds like your truck is all original, if you ahve not replaced the Cam position sensor I would get me one of them too, this is something you only want to buy form FoMoCo or IH ..the parts store ones are junk.
Easy to replace, about 15 minutes under the front of the truck.

Accelerator pedal. I would bet my $100 bucks I won on the boards here that will fix it. I believe they are about $125 at the dealer. The 6.0 has the same issue. Dirt gets in the reastat at about 100,000 miles. 3 bolts and it's fixed. I kept a new one behind the seat on my hot shot trucks. Google 7.3 or 6.0 accelerator pedal. I think someone shows how to clean them. I just bought new ones.

Definitely your TPS... If it was your CPS starting to go out, the truck would randomly die at idle. Real sweet when you're waiting to make a turn in traffic. No need to take it to a shop for either issue. Oh, and if you don't already, pick up a spare CPS from the dealer ($25-30) and keep it in your glove box, along with a 10mm wrench.

I'm not an expert, but I have worked on mine a time or two... :D

I believe the TPS is a recall item. I took my 7.3 to the dealer about a year or so ago and they replaced it.

cps recall was just recently performed(4-5 months ago)....not that it means much.
My Odometer shows 90k but I've run that last 60k on 35'" tires....just switched down to 34's(33.8).

Zig the CPS is just one of those things that can crap out without warning, and if you have a spare it takes 15 min to change, it is about the size of a pack of smokes and i carry one in the glove box, along with tools to change it.
The TPS, is the "fly by wire deal that sends a electric signal to the PCM when you push on the gas, it is the electronic version of a throttle cable. it is what the wires plug into on the deal your gas pedal is attached to.
Your problem sounds like TPS to me.
If the CPS is dead, you will know because your tach needle will not twitch up to 500 RPM or so when you are cranking trying to start.
