Bigbores thread last weekend was awesome so I thought I’d follow up with another one. I had a little too much responsibility at Disney on Memorial Weekend, we decided to celebrate this weekend. And amazingly enough, we were able to get us all together which is pretty rare with a 22 year old daughter and a 20 year old son. Plus my dad and his wife were free so should be some good times. We didn’t tell the kids where we were going just that they’d be back in town by noon on Sunday.

This is my dad’s boat which I’ve posted some pics of awhile back. It’s a 49’ DeFever trawler. Not a planning hull and cruises at just 8.5 knots. Certainly not quick but great for long distance cruising. He’s been as far north as San Francisco and as far south as Puerta Velarta Mexico. My dad at 81 is still an avid boater!

A little about my father, he’s also a musical conductor and was director of bands at CSU Long Beach for 24 years. For the past 26 he’s conducted professional bands and orchestras, having conducted the LA Phil a couple times at the Hollywood Bowl and is currently the conductor of the Long Beach Municipal Band, I play in the group and it’s filled with some of LA’s top players. All this to say that the name of his boat appropriately enough is “Bandwagon”.

We’re heading out at 6am this morning to make sure that we can get a mooring in Avalon. They can go quickly on Friday mornings and are available starting at 9:30am.

I’ll add some more pics as we go.

Pops looks like he's in great shape. Love the boat name

Your boat name isn't too bad either...I saw it coming off the printer

Have fun

I don't think there's another place quite like Avalon...

8.5 is pretty respectable, that's about a 3 hour trip depending on sea conditions?

Takes me a little under 2 hours from Huntington, in my 30' Sea Ray.

Enjoy the weekend!

You’re right, pretty close to 3 hours. A little more from where his slip is. Under 2 hours sounds pretty nice!

We have been fortunate to vacation in some pretty awesome places around the world. One of our favorite vacations remains a week on a mooring in Avalon. It was just us, my parents watched the kids. My buddy loaned us his 43' Viking, complete with a Zodiac for evening cocktail cruises around the moorings. We trolled for marlin off The Slide with the Viking and actually hung one. On just long enough for my wife to get a good look at it. Nothing like an evening in Avalon with those bells tolling from the hill.

That sounds like a perfect week to me! There’s something special and unique about Avalon. I need to come over more often!

I run about 15-16 knts, any faster and the probability of needing to call SeaTow on the way home increases . If I tow my 13' Whaler it's only add 30 minutes.

In my 20's a friend of mine had a 38' Bertram, he'd call me up Friday afternoon asking what I was doing tomorrow, and if I wanted to go fishing? I said yes more often than not. Probably the 3rd or 4th trip after long day trolling, he comes up on the bridge and says "Lets see if we can get a mooring in Avalon?" We did, and from then on I never went fishing again without bringing a nicer change of clothes.

I cannot confirm or deny this, but it is possible in the right conditions.

From 1980 to the mid 90's, we vacationed in Avalon and around Catalina on our sportsfisher out of San Diego.
Amazing times. Always did a few days at Avalon, then on to Isthmus, Cat Harbor or anchored in between.
Fishing, diving, just exploring the shoreline in our inflatable, it always felt like we were in a completely different country, not just across from LA.
Mid 90's sold that boat and we've been weekending or vacationing at Havasu since. Kinda getting burned out so we're spending a lot more time pondering and discussing "What Next".
Seeing these pictures reminds me of that time and how much I miss it. Perhaps it's time to go back to the sea, hmmmm

Thanks for sharing and love the boat, in fact, that looks really comfy !!!

During the week the bars and restaurants of Avalon can almost have a Key West kind of feel to them. If I got up real early, I'd take the Zodiac into the pier and get coffee at that little place on the pier. Was always interesting to just sit, be quite and listen to the locals talk. Interesting people and some great stories.

Thanks for your comments! I too spent a lot of time on the island back in the 70’s and 80’s as a kid and have many fond memories scuba diving and fishing. I also have enjoyed my time in Havasu over the years but could see myself gravitating back to the ocean at some point. We’ll see....
I suppose it doesn’t matter where you enjoy going, as long as it’s on the water.

Agreed! That’s my plan in the morning, a cup of coffee on the pier and listening to the locals.

Love the boat, absolutely love it. When I was a kid my parents friends had a trawler...lots of good times.
The days with family like that are the best. Enjoy.

Nice! I used to go to Catalina often when I managed the business banking for the only bank on the island. Still have a few customers out there.

Looks like great weather and a great time!

We lucked out in the weather. It’s just about perfect!

Awesome. Totally agree!

Very cool!

What a beautiful boat.

Thanks Dan!

It apparently was pretty bad but we’ve been told that the water is back in in the city. Heading ashore in a few minutes to confirm. We have dinner reservations ashore tonight so hoping everything is up and running.

We were saying the same thing a few minutes ago. Can’t believe how many open cans this weekend when the weather has been so amazing. Everybody must have been out last weekend.

When you are on a mooring like that do you set a rear anchor or does everyone just flow with the swells and wind?

The mooring is set up with a tie off on the bow and stern and you stay in there pretty solidly. Tie off the bow and walk the mooring line back to the stern tie off. It’s already anchored.

That is awesome. Brings back memories of sailing over there in my teens with the family. A couple stays in Avalon, but the majority were at Isthmus. Cool place for sure. Makes me want an ocean boat.

Did the same on Cousins sail boat. Best trip over was before his wedding. He rented out the Casino with open bar. Need to hit him up he just upgraded to a 80'. Also want to buy a Catalina cruiser have a spot to park it not far from launch ramp in Pedro.

I grew up on sailboats before my dad shifted over to powerboats as he got older. We had a 33’ Cheoy Lee ketch, a 36’ Lapworth, and a 50’ Caulkins. He sailed to Hawaii and back on the Cheoy Lee and the Caulkins. As a kid, we spent many weekends on the Island, mostly at Emerald, the Isthmus, Whites, and 4th of July. Great memories for sure!
