I just pulled into the jobsite and saw the temp on my radio is 28 degrees! The cold is why I stopped snow skiing. The weather app shows it even colder. 🥶

That’s actually one of the most reasonable things about Lancaster. Plenty of better things to hate it for.

Don't let the cold stop you from skiing (or having a comfortable day working outside in the cold)! You were probably like me in the past and had shitty gear. When I snowboarded I was always either cold the whole time, or I was too hot and sweaty and then got wet and cold after.

Turns out base layers, wool socks and gore-tex pants and jackets all work as advertised. 100% worth the money and zero problems now with activities in the cold for me.

I’m just not a fan of bundling up. I only skied on clear, sunny days. If it was cloudy I stayed home.

15 years ago I did a job in Lancaster and they were working on the 14 freeway, now 15 years later they’re still working on that freeway.

I build a lot of projects for Lockheed in Palmdale in the early 90’s. That wind and cold is brutal.

We have to go to Lancaster for my daughter’s gymnastics competition. She starts at 8am. We would have to wake her up way to early to drive there.

Any places you recommend to stay over night?

A couple of years ago while driving from LHC to NPB CA, when we got to Victorville, my wife decided she might like a little something, like one of those coffee with ice cream things at McDonalds. So, I got off the freeway in Victorville. Found a McDonalds. Then said, WTF! I’ve seen this place before . . . . . .on COPS! 100% true. My wife was persistent and pissed off. She wanted one of those ice cream coffee deals, PERIOD. I said, ok, get out, get it and be careful. She got it. Upon leaving McDonalds and driving back to the freeway, I noticed numerous vehicles leaving excessive space between them and the car in front of them when they were stopped. Bingo. I’d also seen that on a vid about southland gangbangers. Vid said they do that to leave them room to escape an ambush. Oh well. I remember when Victorville was famous for Roy Rogers’ stuffed horse, “Trigger“. Not any more.

Double Tree in Palmdale.
It is actually a nice hotel for a great price.

I’ve many good memories of the entire Antelope Valley. One of the first was stopping at White’s Cafe in Mohave, on our way to Lone Pine. It was still dark, but we were stopping for breakfast. Getting out of our Dad’s old station wagon it was freezing cold. The whistles, smells and noises from the switching locomotives were loud and right next to you. And when you entered White’s Cafe, there was that huge Mountain Lion looking at you. But, It was all good, really good. We were going camping and fishing in Lone Pine.
