Go for the general anesthesia. Another upshot is you won't remember anything for a day or so afterwords.

My last total knock out wasn't bad at all.
The last thing I remember was the 3 sweet looking nurses smiling and waving at me quietly saying...... "buh-bye".

Amazing stuff.

I've done both ways...probably 10 times general and one option # 2 when I had a partial discectomy about 20 years ago. Was a bit odd hearing everything they were doing to you...would probably prefer to be all the way under.

I just had a hip replacement in July. I had the spinal block with sedation (propofol) rather than general anesthesia. I woke up just like from sleeping out of a dream with no ill effects and felt really good. I had never had surgery before. They don't need to stick a tube down your throat either which is a plus. There wasn't any nausea or other hangover effects. I was worried that the needle in my spine would hurt but it was piece of cake.

This seems to be the trend from what I read . so no tube? but still a Oxy mask ?

They all suck.

#1 sucks the least.

Yes, after the spinal was started, they put the mask on I laid down and they said "OK here we go" and that was the last thing I remember until I woke up 2.5 hours later.

I've been under more than I wish. The VA hospital has a restrain warning in my file. Apparently I freak out on the way out and on the way back.

Yes sir.

Like I said, all options suck.

#1 sucks the least.

I had my partial knee 2 years ago and went with #1 and had no issues. The one thing I would NOT do again is the local nerve block when you wake up which is a tube in your leg that drips a drug right on a nerve. It worked so well that when PT came to get me up and around I overdid it and the tube moved. The next thing I know I'm in so much pain they had to knock me out again. Good luck!

7 surgeries in the last 50 days. Full out every time, never woke up with sore throat from tube, and never heard or felt a thing. I'd go back that route.

Full knockout, been under a few times. Everyone's different but anesthesia tends to upset my stomach. If you let them know ahead of time they'll throw In a little cocktail that makes life easy when you wake up so you can get some food & drink down. Pain meds on an empty stomach = no fun.

Weirdest feeling when you go lights out. I remember talking to the nurse in OR, lips kept moving but no sound lol

I had a complete knee replacement with option #2. I was up and walking a couple hours after surgery and I felt great. Sometimes option #1 leaves you a little slow to go when you wake up.

Had a total knee replacement with a spinal. Stayed awake and watched. (Another story in itself). Would be my first choice again. No "hang over", ready to do. Full weight bearing walking in 12 hours without being dizzy. Fast recovery, went home in 36 hours.

I would ask my surgeon which route he would go if he were to undergo the same surgery and choose that route.

I've had over 20 surgeries & a few of them were partially under & let me tell you, get knocked out all the way. It's nice to count backwards & next thing you know you're waking up in recovery. Sweet thing it is.

I've had over 20 major surgeries including 3 knee replacements (one was a revision due to infection). There's no way I would stay awake, especially for a knee replacement. I can't even get a cavity filled without the nitrous on all the way plus two turns.

No reason to stay awake...some guys do it to be "manly", I say fuck that. I don't wanna know what's going on.

Not a knee surgery but have been through 3 eye surgeries (full incisions into interior of my eyes) in the last 8 months. I have done both #1 full out and #2 propofol light sleep with a local injection. For me hands down #2 option was the best. As others have said no nausea and wake up without the narco hangover. To each their own but personally full anesthesia really jacks me up. Good luck with the surgery!

When my wife had bone cancer in her leg, the first surgery was a partial and they cut into her bone just above the knee. She said there wasn't enough drugs to stop the pain. All the rest, she took the George Foreman, knockout me the fuck out route.

Get knocked out. Ask the anesthesiologist to hydrated you as much as possible, and to start the zofran early. I've had about 5 knee surgeries, and don't do well with the anesthesia. Being given may IV bags as possible, and lots antiemetics helped tremendously.

As Brian would say, nitrous on all the way plus 2 turns, Noted. Lol.

Propofol is a helluva a drug.
No hangover effects at all.
It was Michael jacksons drug of choice (until it killed him)

Hahaha what a lovely bunch of damaged folks we are! I went with #1 for my knee surgery, woke up with no issues, and had the nurses in the recovery room laughing the whole time, I asked them what happened and they quoted me coming out of anesthesia saying "man! this is some cheech and chong shit"! I said I guess the old habits die hard! LOL :D:D

I'm going through it too, except my shoulder. Surgery is the 18th of Oct, I'm told it is 2.5 hours. The only part I'm nervous about is the anesthesiology.
Torn bicep, torn labrum and ac joint, the next few months will suck!

Tom I'm 4 weeks out since my shoulder surgery, go the full knockout. Way easier on everyone.

Make sure you eat as soon as possible after surgery, it clears the fog faster.:thumbsup

Good luck buddy!

last time I had to go out I went option #1 full lights out. when I came around they had my arms restrained, the nurse said I came up swinging. they said its not that uncommon, if I get jolted awake at home I do the same thing, so I did warn them that it happens sometime. they said no problem we can handle it. according to the nurse I never connected with anyone but did pull the IV out. given the choice I would do it again.

If anything were to ever go south during the procedure, if you are under general anasthesia, your airway is already managed.

"General anesthesia" has been my choice in the O.R. If you go with general anesthesia make sure you ask for a warm blanket when in the recovery room.

Been there done that hurts like hell. Ask for a muscle relaxer to help you sleep for a few weeks after surgery. If you twitch or have a muscle spasm while falling asleep you will be hating life. Also do your therapy, it took me 9 months before I was back to normal.

When you have shoulder surgery, a bupivacaine dispenser is the shit. The bupivacaine is in a little box with a patient activated button, and a tiny tube connected to the box is implanted in your shoulder. It's good for 72 hours. Ask your doctor about it.

My son had his wisdom teeth pulled a few weeks ago. He took the knockout juice. Afterwards, he took kratom instead of vicodin. It worked well and he only took it for one day afterwards. No opiates.

Recently had left shoulder surgery. Complete rotator tear, detached bicep. Have had general anesthesia on previous knee surgeries with no problems. This surgery was awake as they tried to place a nasal airway. miserable feeling wrong size that wouldn't fit. Next surgery I'm going complete knockout again.

Well after years of hobbling about like "Charlie Chaplin" in pain , I got a recieved a partial right knee replacement implant yesterday I went into the Surgery at 10:15 AM and left for home at 6:30 PM , once I proved to the PT that I could make the hallway and a couple steps she said she would release me ... had a restless nite but I'm walking pretty well today , Hats off to Twin Cities Hospital staff who made this a very nice confortable expirience and Special Thanks To Dr. Kevin Forsythe and Staff most of all Thanks to my bride Rhonda for being there for me Thanks to the RDP brain trust when all said and done I went with the spinal and sedation vs the General
