Bad scene. Two of our contract employees where injured this am when they hit the washout at 5 am. Both airlifted to Vegas in serious condition. Stay clear of the area as I'm sure they will close that until repaired.

Damn, that's terrible.

This is a good reason NOT to travel across the desert at night.

That stretch has been closed to thru traffic for months. They have been rebuilding 2 bridges west of Essex since March or April. Don't know how you can have accidents when there isn't supposed to be traffic.

I believe this happened closer to Kelbaker, which is still open to Amboy.

TWO INJURED WHEN TRUCK CAN?T JUMP WASHED-OUT BRIDGE, BURSTS INTO FLAMES
By Z107.7 News, on July 25th, 2017
Two men are lucky to be alive after they thought their truck could jump a washed out bridge early Tuesday morning. According to County Fire Battalion Chief Mike Snow, paramedics were called to a crash on National Trails Highway in Danby, just east of Cadiz, about 5 a.m. Snow said a bridge over a wash had been washed out several years ago, but the men, who are employees of a gas pipeline company, thought if their truck was traveling fast enough, it could sail over the washed-out bridge to the other side. The truck landed short, however, with the front axle catching the trench on the other side. Snow said the truck instantly burst into flames upon landing but the men were able to get out of the truck on their own. The truck was a total loss. The men were flown to a hospital in Las Vegas for treatment of moderate injuries.

I just read the report, not near Kelbaker. The road from 40 at Goffs to Essex is still open to Essex where the road is then closed and you can detour back to the 40. I presume the incident occurred somewhere along the open portion of the roadway before Essex? Flash floods suck! You gotta keep your eyes open this time of year when there is weather in the area.

That is wild if true.

Looks like this is within the portion of 66 that has been closed to through traffic on and off throughout the past couple years. Capture.jpg

According to the article above, it was east of Cadiz which is in the closed down stretch. Be interesting to see on a map whether is was at the bottom of the grade to the old gas station, or at the top. Only bridges east of Cadiz are on top past the kiosk.

Took that way ONE time on our way to Laughlin in the middle of the night. It was super sketchy. We have tried to go back that way a couple times since, but that part of the road where this happened has been closed for awhile now.

The stretch from Goffs Rd to Mountain Springs Rd has been closed down for a couple years now. Doubt they'll ever fix it since there are no businesses or houses on it. Don't know why it's "sketchy"..... been taking it every other weekend for years and there are far worse roads.

The best part of that road is the ability to grab burritos from the Crazy Coyote stand by the outlets or as you enter the reservation.[emoji106]

Kinda admire them telling the truth that they were hooning the truck, but might have been better to just say it was a pure accident. Would suck ass to be hurt and lose your job at the same time

We get off at the exit before the outlets. It's on the same side but at the west end of the side road. Then pop back on the 10 and get off on the 62. Best burritos ever had.

Got it. And I agree on the burritos and tacos. But didn't this happen close to the 40?

And people thought getting into Topock has been bad. Wait for the new diversion of water that's in place.👎

Thats the incident but our report states they did not see the opening until it was too late. Our business is built on safe operating practices and seriously doubt if they knew it existed, they would jump it. I have some pretty graphic photos but cannot share until the investigation is complete. The driver sustained compound fractures to his legs and still can't imagine how they got out.
