Hola..... so the head unit on my boat has a couple issues. USB port on the back is not working on the internal equalizer/fade/etc also seems to be on the fritz. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth sending to a repair shop, or just buying a new one. Anybody have any suggestions in the I.E. for a good shop that's not going to take weeks to get it done?

This looks just like the head unit but I'm not too sure mine has a CD player

In most cases, generally they are not worth repairing. If you want to bring it by the shop, we can look at it for you, we are an authorized alpine dealer.... If you end up buying a new unit, show this reply to the guys at the counter and get an RDP discount.

Buy new... a quality hu is so cheap these days

That's kinda the way I'm leaning. But here's what's stopping me from just doing it. It has what I believe is a Wireless remote on the back that I also believe is matched for the head unit. May sound funny, but the guy told me it was disconnected and not working when I bought the boat, but I'm wondering if it needs batteries or something.. lol. Trying not to have to switch out too much stuff on this boat...... yet, and I haven't had the time to really get into the details of it.

I'm assuming the remote will not work with another brand of stereo and the only Alpine Marine audio stereo that comes up is what I already have.

Might just do that. Just to confirm, you don't need the whole boat there right? I ask because I'm in the middle of a brake conversion and trailer repair.

No we don't need the whole boat there. If you have the radio out of the boat we have a TestBench we can hook it up on and test it.

I would find out what remote you have and do a check when ordering a new alpine hu. It might still work with other models.

I think some of the alpine remotes are rf. Is it wired?

Honestly I would look at a cheaper hu. I had that model In my Tahoe and I didn't love it because you needed to be a computer programmer to take full advantage.

Thank you. If I make it up there I'll be the guy with the confused look on his face with two little dudes in tow. One of them is a real ankle bitter so stand by Lol.

I haven't stuck my head behind the paneling in the rear engine compartment to verify that yet, but It looks exactly like the one in the link and I couldn't find one of those that is not wireless. It seems like that HU is built for the tech savy guys out there, I'm not one of them for sure.

Its wireless.....as long as the new alpine hu has steering wheel controls it should work. You need to make sure you unplug and keep the rf received from the back of the hu before you junk it.

Are you trying to use a newer iPhone or iPod touch on that head units USB and getting an error message?

If your remote is silver and about 4" diameter with an LCD display, it won't work with a newer non-marine head unit.

We tried a Droid and and iPone 4 via the USB port. I'm not the audio savy guy so I was just kind of following along. It was either an error message on the LCD or nothing worked at all.

Couldn't get the Bluetooth to work at all.

And yes, the remote is about 3 3/4 wide. I'm not even sure if it's working or not. I was told it was disonnected??? So I don't know if he was referring to the wiring on the back of the Head Unit or if he actually thought the wireless remote was hardwired in.

I'll try to get out there today and mess with it a bit more.

Before you waste money trying to get the USB port repaired, try an iPod nano or iPod classic on it to verify its broken. The older Alpines have a problem with newer iPhones and iPod Touches.
If you do decide to get it repaired, sending it back to Alpine is your best bet.
