Well I paid a shop to look into my outdrive due to leaking oil at the end of last season and it still hasn’t been fixed.

They changed the impeller and I believe the shift bushing. (Not sure exactly)

Any members have any idea what could be causing this?

If not I’ll take it to another shop.

Did they replace the seal under the impellar? That’s the first place to look. The second is the shaft seal where the lower unit shaft enters the upper unit.

But to do it correctly, you remove the drive unit (upper and lower) and pressure test it at 6psi. You spray soapy water over all the seals (prop/implellar/upper/drive shaft. It shouldn’t loose any pressure over an hour or so and you don’t see any bubbles in when spraying the soapy water. You can fashion a pressure tester from a radiator pressure test kit from harbor frieght.

This is the seal under the impellar.

Thanks! They did replace the shaft seal.

I’m pretty sure they didn’t pressure test the unit. It wasn’t on the invoice and no mention of it when I talked to them.

If they replaced the upper unit shaft seal where the lower unit shaft goes into the upper… there would be plenty of evidence of that repair because you have to completely disassemble the upper unit and remove the gear set. At that point you are pretty much doing a complete upper IRAN (inspect, replace as nessesary) on the drive. Also, you can’t or it would be insane to just replace the upper shaft seal, you would be resealing the entire upper since all the seals get busted on the disassembly.

gotcha must have just been the seal under the impeller.

Thanks for the heads up!

From the looks of the condition I would say the housing is cracked somewhere

Here are the four spots it most likely is leaking since the oil is in the water pickup…

You have to pressure test!

Upper drive shaft seal it runs out all over the place, oil from the water intakes is the seal carrier under the pump
