Like title says pretty scary incident involving a jack ass big rig driver on CA-95 last night.

So on my way out to Havasu Landing last night around 11pm. i had to stop at Billy B’s and pick up my buddies boat for him (it was there for service and he was supposed to be coming out to pick it up but had to cancel last minute and asked if i could grab it and put it in his storage). So hook up the boat and back onto the 95 south towards the landing right at the 5 mile road cut off we catch a big rig car transporter that is going ridiculously slow, like 35 mph on flats and barely keeping 20 mph on any hill, its night im towing and there really isnt any safe passing areas for a while so just suck it up and follow behind him. The longer this goes on the more a line is starting to stack up behind us it gets to a big rig, a car, and 2 more big rigs behind that. We get to a little passing area that i didnt feel was big enough for me towing to jump out and pass so i stay put, the car jumps out and passes us no problem. Then i notice big rig headlights jump out and am like “WTF” also i notice the center divider is back to double yellow now and think the big rig will get back in line. Well this guy doesnt care and just keeps motoring along trying to pass the big rig behind me, me towing a boat and the car transporter. About the time he gets up to the side of the boat i see big rig cab lights out the left side of my windshield and realize we are coming up to a bend in the road and a big rig is coming the other way around it. First thought is to slam on the brakes to avoid this but i have 2 more big rigs on my ass and dont want to get rear ended by the big rig behind me. Now by this time the big rig coming the other way is around the bend laying on his horn as he realized what is going on. So i realize the only way not to die in this situation is to veer off the highway into the dirt, luckily the shoulder was wide enough to get the whole truck and boat off the road, the big rig behind me followed into the dirt. Last second the dumbass jerks over to avoid the head on almost swinging his trailer into me in the dirt, the big rig behind me wasnt able to slow down in the dirt at the same rate i was so he has to jerk back onto the road to not rear end the boat, he gathers it up and slows enough to let me back on the road. Maybe a mile later get to a straight away and see i have plenty of room to pass so i haul ass around and get away from all the trucks.
Holy hell i really would like to know what the eff that guy was thinking when he decided to jump out. All i know is we were surrounded by 5 big rigs and we would have lost bad in any accident situation.

Well, kinda like the 20% rule. Sounds like the one driver behind you was cool, and didn't risk death or your boat. Glad no one got hurt, but sketchy AF:oops:

Glad all were safe, and you had room. Hairy. Good job maintaining control. Blew a SA trailer tire coming down from Needles, just shy of the straight up to the Junction. Had the paved drainage to pull off onto, soo glad it wasn't at night.

Sounds like a shitty situation...great reaction on your part...

That is the worst.... my biggest worry of driving 95, Rice, 395 and any of those mtn/desert 2 lane roads are the people behind me....not in front of me.... IMO I think I know those roads and where to pass and when someone gets out in the left oncoming lane to pass me at a spot I know is blind, it infuriates me.... I literally slow immediately to let them get around and get far as I can away from them....

Hate these sorta things. Glad you lived to tell about it!

I was at the river, parked on the side of the road, talking to OC on my cell phone...

As I'm watching, this grey hair pulls onto the highway, a chick starts to pass going the opposite direction.

I thought, these two are gonna go head on and are going to take me out with them!!!

At the last moment, the chick sees the guy pulling out, slams on the brakes and darts back in behind the guy she was trying to pass.

I don't think the grey hair even knew how close he came to being dead. He was looking to his left the whole time. He would have Never have known what hit him.

I try like hell to time my left turn on the 17 mile road so I can turn without waiting. I've even pulled over on the west side by the sign to avoid a collision. We have been promised 5 separate times by Cal Trans to widen the road to include a dedicated turn lane onto the 17 mile road. I even remember receiving the Cal Trans letter confirming this. Obviously, we haven't provided enough dead bodies to justify this lane, or once again, Cal Trans is Lying and Denying.

Well you just made up my .ind to go through havasu today ! I hate that stretch you are talking about . For almost 30 years we took rice road and in my opinion the 95 is far scarier. Great heads up driving !

Good to hear that it all worked out. I have seen a couple of crazy situations like this. I hate when ours put you into a position of danger. I just don’t understand what they are thinking. Coming into Parker from Quartzite I had a guy that didn’t give on F like your guy to the point that those of us in the on coming traffic just came to a stop. I do always wonder if they are having a medical emergency….🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

I'm no longer in a hurry to get to my house in Parker. Taking my time and keeping my eyes peeled for stupidity is how I roll now. Good thinking on your part on the projected outcome and your ability to react to the situation.

Glad everyone is safe, how many rocks ended up hitting the boat?
Im hoping not much if any. At least hoping not enough that it did any damage. With only doing like 30 mph off the gas when i went into the dirt i dont think it would have thrown much. Gonna go over to his storage in a bit and wipe the boat down before i put the cover on it so i will look it over in the daylight. It was dark and late last night so we just put it in storage, went to the house and went to bed.

Wow. Scary stuff. You did excellent. That God that shoulder was wide and firm enough to support your truck and towed boat. Any idea what your speed was when you entered the shoulder area?

Areas of Rice Rd there is no shoulder or it’s soft as hell.

Well Done. Shoulders on that road recently graded & rehabbed from runoff damage. You really handled what could have bern disaster in that deep sand. 👍

Rice Road i drive looking in the rear, that's the guy who will kill you, not the one in a million head on. On a busy weekend, you may get multiple people pass you were you were is wasn't safe.

The crazy truckers and cars passing almost hitting head on has become ridiculous. We try not to drive at night anymore because it seems even worse.

That's some scary shit! Encountered something very similar on the same stretch. It's absolutely insane how much stupid is out on our highways now. The trucks have gotten way outa hand in the last fifteen years...a lot of third world foreigners that don't give a shit about anything.

The stretch from the Tracks @ Rice to the Tracks on the Vidal stretch seems to be the more prominent kill zone. That 20 miles is fucked.

We finally settled on NO RICE ROAD Fri-Sunday. After numerous close calls all the impatient idiots can do their thing to someone else.
Narcissistic attitudes on a known kill road. There was a flipped Van with 20 dogs just last weekend. Life flight and all and I read the driver did not make it leaving his 12 year old son. Ran into the dirt to avoid a passer and lost it. We had to do exactly this twice in a year.

I usually head to the river with several items in the back seat so I can enjoy the benefits of Cienega Springs Road.....those that know, know.

The stories you must have with the first hand conversations you have everyday pulling these guys over. Many of us remember Chp Officer on the Pear Blossom. Great guy even when pulling over on Friday nights. Mostly a good warning.
Forgot the details, but he did’nt make it,lost his life probably helping somebody.
Be careful FBW.

You’d think they could dump some money on Rice road and put proper passing lanes in every few miles for both directions (ie a third lane that swaps back and forth from side to side for passing on that side only and then swaps to the other side for that side only).

Rice road is fine if you spend as much time in your mirrors as you do looking ahead. Sometimes you need to hit the brakes…hard….let whatever shitshow happen way up ahead rather than right in front of you. If you’re not on your A game…take another route.

On the way out Friday I said “watch this shit” at least 4 times to the wife as I stabbed the brakes based on what I saw happening in my mirrors….enough room for one to pass, a bit of traffic behind me, and I counted 4 pull out to pass me (I was towing a jet ski, I keep it under 70…towing anything bigger…keep it under 63…the river will still be there 15 minutes later). Pretty sure I saved at least a couple lives by hauling it down to 20mph so everyone could get back in.

All you need to do is pay attention to what’s happening all around you, not just in front of you.

If you're driving at 90mph...

You usually don't have to worry about people passing you!

Usually. 😎
