They are running 30’-40 in the stutter bumps and 30’s on the trails. Slower in the technical parts.

I know of jeeps that can do it. My buddy Craig has one that would keep up handily.

Pics from day 1-2

So my recap of Lake Alamo 2018. DWC and group were pretty late to the meeting point. They had a late night the night before (it happens), and then Doug had some car trouble (batteries were dead in the AM) the next morning. We all left the south side of town to head to the washes and start making our way east, and I blew a belt in my Ranger. (This never happens, but now I know what to look for)

In summary if your machine feels like it's dragging a boat anchor and isn't running correctly.. The odds are probably pretty high you are about to blow a belt. LOL When that does happen I don't care how many times you look in there and clean it out there's pieces of belt way up in the vent etc.. We took it off fixed it, ran it, and it was making noise. Took the cover off again more belt was in there. Took the cover off again more belt was in there. It was at this point I said "F it, you guys leave me and I'll meet you out there." Went home and repeated that process a couple of different times again and more and more came out.. Sucks because we had it fixed in about 10 minutes once we got home. Next time I think I would just run it without the cover for a couple of miles and if something falls out of the vent it won't go through the pulleys.

After that I loaded my Ranger up on the car hauler, and Mike took my Toy hauler and we just towed out to Lake Alamo.

Pro Tip #1. DO NOT BELIEVE GOOGLE MAPS OR APPLE MAPS! It tells you it's a three and a half hour drive. I have no idea why it says this.. It's more like 2 hrs to 2 hrs 15 min. It was saying an hour and a half right up until we were 38 miles away! I kept thinking maybe there's a dirt road with a 5mph speed limit or something? It's paved the whole way with a 50 mph speed limit right until the end.

The drive from Parker to Lake Alamo (both on dirt and on road) is beautiful and if you haven't done it I highly recommend it. You get to pass several small towns on the road like Bouse, Salome, Hope, and you turn left at Wenden. Each of these towns has a ton of history and if you look it up on Wikipedia some of them are good for a few laughs and education.

When you get closer to Alamo lake you will start crossing Cattle guards. Slow down and enjoy the view! The scenery is breath taking, and you will spot cows and donkeys. We ended up stopping and seeing three smaller cows right at the side of the road, as well as donkeys on the way in, the kids loved it. When you get to the reduced speed area obey the speed limits.

The Cabins were extremely nice and much better than I anticipated. They book fast so if you are thinking of going, pick a date 8-12 months out and book it and stick to it. The showers were nice as well! The building itself was colder than it was outside (not even sure how that's possible), but that's the fastest I've ever dried off and got dressed in my life.

That said if you are into partying and music etc.. Alamo isn't the spot for you. We had my SXS stereo turned on and the Ranger came over at 7:30 PM and we turned it down to quiet conversation level. It was at that point he said at 10PM Radios are "off!" Sure as shit at 10PM on the dot he came by and it was either off or beat feet out of the campground. He was nice but firm about it and you can tell he wasn't remotely flexible.

The next morning at Wayside we heard several stories about people that had to break down camps in the middle of the night and find new shelter because they were booted from the State Camp Ground. So pay attention to the things I'm telling you above.. They don't care and will toss your ass in the middle of the night! LOL

The lake itself is beautiful, the campground is pristine and it's a great place to take your family. My kids really enjoy it. They also do their local nature walks and the rangers give them little bags to pick up trash and they can earn badges / posters etc..

Part II in the next post.

Slot Canyon day.

The riding out in this area is nothing short of spectacular. Because it's so remote there's no washboard (couple places but it's literally a couple hundred feet in soft sand) really to be noticed.

Last year we ran out to the Mcgruff cabin and Slot Canyon. This year the group went to the campground (late start) and then Saturday we hit slot canyon. We skipped the Mcgruff Cabin saturday and just hit slot canyon and then returned to camp. That was partially because of a late start, but it was also freezing outside and I don't think anybody was to excited about the prospect of going out when it's in the 40's. As soon as the sun came out things warmed up quickly and it made for a really nice afternoon.

While it's "offroading" running the graded roads in a SXS is a ton of fun. Just becareful because you never know what's on the other side of those hills and turns. You can find yourself head to head with a donkey pretty quick, or someone that doesn't know any better and just decided to park just out of view. I ran most of them at 35-40 mph and had a great time.. Realistically there's sections you can run Rally car style as fast as your car will go. Again though if you miss a turn or run up on something, I'm not sure that risk is worth the reward.

On Sunday Sunday Mike hooked up to the toyhauler and he went back to Havasu. The rest of the group went to Wayside for Breakfast. I really like this little place! The owners are friendly. They have a daughter that is my kids age and my kids really look forward to seeing her each year. They get a little slice of desert life (real desert life, not Havasu life) hanging out with her. Last year she was selling cool rocks she hunts. This year it was a giant piece of cardboard and a sand hill that they were sledding down.

The owner Dave came out and thanked our group for the business. While the food takes forever when you have a group of 20, it's good and all homemade. I'd recommend the biscuits and gravy heavily. 2 years in a row they were my favorite thing. In talking to Laura, there is (obviously) a TON of great offroading on this side of the lake. There's "Red Canyon" and countless mines to go check out and explore. When we go back again I'd like to do more exploring on this side, instead of back tracking on trails we have already hit.

After Breakfast our group split into a couple of groups heading back. One that wanted to run straight home, and the others I believe was a middle of the road, and finally the ones that wanted to hit all three cabins on the way back and have beers stops. I wasn't with them so I'll let them share their stories of fun, racing and injuries.

We turned left and headed back to the road and ultimately to load up on the trailer.

Part III loading up and heading home.

We ran back to Alamo and I was regretting not letting Robert and Heather take my truck and trailer home. When we got back to the state park my kids god their little bags that they had collected trash with and the family went to the ranger station while I was loading up. Things got pretty quiet pretty fast, and I was sitting there all by myself just enjoying the scenery of it all. Honestly it was the highlight of my whole trip! The place is pretty breath taking if you stop for a few minutes and take a look around, and the serenity of it all with no other people around was amazing. It also gave me sometime to reflect on the weekend and all the things that we have seen. It made me realize how thankful I am to live where I live where places like this are a stones throw away.

A few minutes later that calmness was interrupted by the workers on their utility vehicles coming up to scrape the ashes out of the fire pits and collect any remaining trash (there wasn't any). I put the SXS on the trailer and transferred the car seats and everything else that could blow out of the back of it. Picked up the family and started our short journey home. On the way out we weren't treated to see any Donkeys or Cows, but I did find myself paying a lot more attention to the land signs for sale and day dreaming about a Cabin out in the middle of nowhere.

While we did miss out on the ride home, each way has it's own experiences, and towing out didn't bother me one bit. On the way home we again ran through those small towns. The kids were dead tired and sleeping most the way. They woke up in Parker just in time to see what has to be the freshest engine in the fleet. The paint was still wet on the side of this thing, and it's not too often you get to see a freight train up close and personal.

45 minutes later they were in the showers and people were stopping by in small groups all the way up until pretty late at night to get their belongings out of the toy hauler.
Last night I went to bed about midnight, and I didn't wake up until 10:30 today. It's exhausting, but the memories are priceless.

Damn, this looked like a ton of fun. Would a Rhino be able to make the run?
